GIRLS WRITE NOW NEWSFLASH SPRING 2012

CHAPTERS 2012 SPRINGS UP
Monica and Elaine

The lights go down. The curtain goes up. GWN mentees take the stage. CHAPTERS 2012 returns this spring! Yes, it is another thrilling series of readings from Girls Write Now's teen writers, and a line-up of celebrated special guests.

CHAPTERS 2012 gets swinging on March 23, with events following monthly through June, all at the John Street Church. We're excited to welcome esteemed writers Alix Kates Shulman, Keli Goff, Raina Kelley, and Andi Buchanan, who will present alongside Girls Write Now mentees and their mentors, in front of an audience of friends, family--and we hope YOU!

More info will be headed to your inboxes in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for details. In the meantime, you can revisit the joys of past CHAPTERS events on YouTube, and get ready for a fresh new season of readings coming your way.

GWN REMIX - DIGITIZE YOUR INK!Dorkshop 1

The future starts NOW: the Girls Write Now Digital Remix pilot program is up and running! Mentees and mentors gathered at Parsons The New School for Design on Saturday, February 11, and met with their fearless dorkShop facilitators: Julia, Lara, Lauren, and Monica. The Remixers each came prepared with three pieces of writing they intended to remix: one of their own original pieces, one piece chosen from the 2011 GWN Anthology, and one piece solicited from a special contest on Figment.com. The focus of this dorkShop: using photo and video to help tell your story--in other words, visual storytelling.

Eager to learn more about GWN Digital Remix? Youth Board member (and GWN mentee alum) Ximena Castillo was on the scene, reporting for the Girls Write Now blog. Figment.com covered the program's launch, and has been following the mentees' progress so far. And isn't there a saying about the best news coming straight from the source? Check out gwnremix.org for the latest work, fresh from the Remixers themselves!

Digital Remix Portfolio pilot is supported by the MacArthur Foundation and the Hive Digital Learning Fund in The New York Community Trust.

JULIE POWELL COOKS UP A MEMOIR

Julie Powell video We were delighted to have the delicious Julie Powell at December's memoir workshop on food writing. Read more (and watch the video!) on Figment.

TO OUR MENTORS AND DONORS:
We can never say thank you enough.GWN Mentee

We took advantage of National Thank Your Mentor Day on January 21 to thank two groups of people without whom we wouldn't (and couldn't) thrive: our amazing mentors, and our generous supporters, who helped us exceed our Holiday Appeal goal by nearly $17,000, raising a total of $97,000. Thanks for launching us into a 2012 of possibilities.

PAIR SPOTLIGHT: PRISCILLA AND MY-THUAN

Priscilla and My-Thuan
This spring, we shine the spotlight on 2nd-year mentee Priscilla Guo, a 10th-grader from Forest Hills, Queens, and her mentor, My-Thuan Tran, a global health consultant from Washington Heights.

Priscilla, according to her mentor, is a total self-starting type, and needs no additional motivation to write. Whether it be at Birch Cafe (their favorite local haunt), or the nearest Starbucks, the two spend their weekly meetings working on Priscilla's personal projects, of which there is no shortage! Persuasive essays, poetry, journalism pieces, and, most recently, a play, have all found their way into Priscilla and My-Thuan's pair sessions.

Read more about these two busy GWN-ers, including an exclusive update about Priscilla's CHAPTERS 2012 reading piece, and the (digital) answer to a pair conundrum!
