Kids Ferst in Gilmer County
Kids Ferst in Gilmer County is a unique partnership with the Ferst foundation for Childhood Literacy and Georgia publishers. Our goal is to reach every preschool child in Gilmer County, encouraging the love of reading, eliminating illiteracy, and fostering learning success when they start kindergarten. Each enrolled child receives an age appropriate book by mail monthly, along with a parent guide to encourage families to read together. The program is free to all families thanks to donations from individuals, businesses, and local service organizations. ($28 provides a year's worth of books for a child.) Currently, we have about 1,000 local preschoolers enrolled in our program and have mailed out 63,259 books since the program was initiated in March of 2007. Registration forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Gilmer County Library and the Gilmer Community Food Pantry. Parents and guardians may also register their child online at www.ferstfoundation.org.
To make a tax-deductible donation, make checks payable to Ferst Foundation and mail to Kids Ferst, P.O. 105, Ellijay, GA 30540.
Recently, Kids Ferst CAT (Community Action Team) members represented Gilmer County at a Ferst Foundation Summit and donated a picnic basket filled with local items and apples. (Photo L-R: Judy Harvey, Sharon Smith, Rena Ashworth, Louise Sweat, Betsy Sheppard and Joan Blomquist.
