Celebrate the Launch of Home Brew

With Beer from Parallel 49 on December 15!

Join the Museum of Vancouver and Parallel 49 for a beer as we launch Home Brew: How Vancouver and Beer Made Each Other on December 15th! As the Community Sponsor of this virtual exhibition, Parallel 49 brewed a special beer just for the occasion!

The brewers teamed up to create “Nightblood,” an old-fashioned-inspired imperial stout conditioned on bourbon-infused oak and orange peel. Light orange peel aroma blends with dark roast coffee and bread flavour from malts, toasted marshmallow and vanilla from the oak, and a touch of bourbon kick in the aftertaste. With firm bitterness from hops and orange peel, it has a semi-dry clean finish that’s perfect for the winter.

Beer will be free with admission! Parallel 49 will also be serving their Craft Lager and non-alcoholic options too!

While you enjoy a beer, the MOV's CEO, Mauro Vescera will present some highlights from Home Brew, followed by guest speakers Graham With, Parallel 49's Head Brewer, and Ken Beattie, the Executive Director of the BC Craft Brewers Guild.

Tickets are just $5 (plus fees) and all proceeds will be donated to the Museum of Vancouver. Get your tickets now!

Re-Imagining Refugee Memoir

Book Readings & Discussion on January 11, 2024

It’s not uncommon to expect that a memoir around someone’s refugee experience would be full of gratitude for their new country. But is that realistic?

Y-Dang Troeung was born in a Cambodian refugee camp and was named after that camp, Khao-I-Dang. When she arrived in Canada, she and her family were photographed with prime minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau while she held a tiny Canadian flag, making her a “poster-child” of the Vietnam War era.

Y-Dang grew up to become an academic. She researched and taught critical refugee studies, among other topics. He memoir, Landbridge: Life in Fragments, includes her own story as a newcomer to Canada and her family’s stories of living through the Cambodian genocide.

But she also explores the idea of “the good refugee.” In an interview on the Ways of Knowing podcast, Y-Dang discussed the idea that refugees are good, innocent and deserving of the west’s charity and how this “erases any complexity in the story. It erases any histories of the state’s complicity in military aggression,” referring to the bombings of Phnom Penh by the USA.

Carmen Aguirre, who is featured in the Refuge Canada exhibition, which is on now through February 2nd, 2024 at the MOV, also speaks of America’s role in creating the dictatorship in Chile that she and her family escaped from. They became refugees in Canada but then returned to Latin America to join the revolution, which is the focus of her memoir, Something Fierce: Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter. In addition to this book, Carmen has written and co-written a follow up memoir and over 25 plays, including Anywhere But Here and The Refugee Hotel, which also explore her experiences as a refugee and her work in the revolution.

Both Y-Dang and Carmen’s books subvert the expectations of refugee memoir and readings from both authors will be held on January 11th followed by a moderated discussion led by Dr. Amanda R. Cheong. Carmen will be reading from her book, and Chris B. Patterson, Y-Dang’s husband and collaborator, will be reading on behalf of Y-Dang, who passed away in 2022.

Tickets to the event are by donation and include admission to the MOV that day. Purchase yours in advance here. We encourage you to visit the Refuge Canada exhibition before the reading begins at 6:30pm.

Give the Gift of Culture

Gift Ideas for Your Friends, Family and Community

We all need a little more culture in our lives. Having access to view and experience art and history and to connect with people through shared experiences, stories, and cultural objects is an invaluable part of being human! So how do you give the gift of culture? Supporting the Museum of Vancouver is one way! And you can support by considering the Museum during the gift giving season.

Pre-paid admission to the MOV is a great gift for your friends, family, colleagues, teachers, hairstylists, neighbours, favourite baristas and more! You can order online and then pick up the prepaid tickets at the Museum.

Buying a Museum of Vancouver Membership is a gift that gives all year long! There are different membership types, including those for individuals, couples, seniors and families. Members can visit the MOV as many times as they want throughout the year—plus they can access discounts at the gift shop, discounted rates on workshops, and discounts when you visit the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and Royal BC Museum! To purchase a membership as a gift, chat with the staff at the MOV’s front desk or call Visitor Services at 604-736-4431. They’ll walk you through the process and answer any questions you have.

And finally, you can give the gift of culture to your community by making a donation to the Museum itself. Donations help the Museum deliver its exhibitions, education, and public programming, as well as helping to steward a collection of over 80,000 artifacts and belongings on behalf of the City of Vancouver. One-time or monthly donations can be made online via CanadaHelps, which will issue a tax receipt right away.

Thank you for making Vancouver’s culture a little stronger by thinking of the MOV during this holiday season!
