Author Bootcamp
Vijay Shivdasani

Vijay Shivdasani is the latest to complete the author bootcamp. This means that he can now create and publish his own stories without requiring a review from the Editorial team at Ghumakkar. Also, his role has now changed from a 'contributor' to an 'author'.

If you think you are ready for the responsibility of being an independent author at Ghumakkar, do feel free to write to us.

Greetings!

Greetings from the team at Ghumakkar!

It's time again for the end-of-the-month update meant specially for our authors. There's never a quiet time at Ghumakkar, both at the frontend and at the backend. And this September was no different. While many exciting stories were published on the site, a lot of changes have happened behind the scene as well. This authorletter will help you get acquainted with them.

 Ghumakkar Family

Ghumakkar evolves all the time. Right now, there are no hard and fast rules about the use of media apart from the usual copyright/privacy stuff. And as a result, you'll see photos and videos being used in different ways by each Ghumakkar and this gives each author a unique personality. However, here are a few guidelines that will help you use the digital media most optimally:

First, always remember that the primary asset of a story is the story itself. The text presides and is supported by digital media. The roles of both the components cannot be switched too often.

Second, remember that the purpose of the digital media is to showcase the place. While a couple of pictures of people are good for a story, reserve a considerable number of pictures through which the readers can take an unhindered look at the place. It is the place that the readers need to decide about so it is important for them to get an idea of what they should expect from it.

Third, somethings or situations call for a video rather than a stationary shot, Consider for example, the traditional dance of a place you've visited or a salmon jumping up a waterfall. A video can do these moments more justice than a picture.

Fourth, try to support your pictures with good, meaningful captions because captions help a reader relate to the pictures and also add to your story. And they also make your pictures appear pretty because pictures with captions are displayed with a nice black frame around them.

Fifth and final, use large pictures. The optimum resolution for Ghumakkar is 640*480. While this size is a bit expensive real-estate-wise, we are ready to bear this cost because images with this resolution appear clear on all display types.

Here are some examples where we feel that digital media has been used suitably:

Tadoba National Park- A Heaven for Wildlife Lover - for its fitting use of video

Dodital Trek: Himalayan Adventures - for its engaging captions

These are by no means the only examples. Ghumakkar is full of stories that make optimum use digital media. And we hope you'll find this note helpful when you're preparing your next post for publishing.

For any feedback or suggestions, please write to us at info@ghumakkar.com but for now, go on, read the rest of this authorletter. It is full of news for Ghumakkars.

Cheers,

In tete-a-tete with Amit Kumar

Featured Author for the month of September 2011

One of the fairly new authors at Ghumakkar, Amit has stood out and marched ahead with his 23 stories in about 6 months. His approach towarAmit Kumards travel is almost spiritual and his trips full of research. And because of this, the editorial team did not have any qualms in crowning him the Featured Author for the month of September 2011.

And as per our tradition, we conducted a short interview with him over phone and over email and even though, this is by no means enough to know this always-on-move Ghumakkar, we think you'd find his approach interesting. So here goes:

Ghum: Tell us more about yourself apart from what we know through your profile and stories.
Amit: In one word I would like to describe myself as wanderer. In my initial days of study when I was preparing for engineering entrance, I always used to spend more time with railway time-table than books. Because the main idea was the excitement of going to a new place than cracking the examination itself. So, after 12th I traveled most of the part of our country like Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai etc to give examination, thanks to the lack of centralized form those days...click here to read the complete interview

So what's new in the travel world?

Travelling is good!

Air India has come up with a short-term travePlanel scheme to help make your travels around India convenient and cost-effective. It involves a bit of plane-hopping but since when have Ghumakkars been afraid of it?  Simply purchase a Silver pass for Rs. 35,000 if you are ok with travelling in Economy class or a Platinum pass for Rs. 75,000 if you prefer luxury and board unlimited number of domestic flights within 15 days from the commencement of the journey. Click here to find out more about this exciting scheme.

IRCTC is going green by doing away with the need to carry a printout of your e-tickNewset to the railways stations when you are travelling. A screenshot of the e-ticket displayed on your laptop, mobile, palmtops (fashionably termed as a Virtual Reservation Message or VRM) will be treated as a valid ticket if accompanied by one of the eight accepted identity proofs. However, there seem to be some hiccups in the communication between the department and the staff on the ground, so it might be prudent to carry an e-ticket with you in case the TTE you land up with isn't aware of this new rule. For more details, read this report about the VRM.
