Athletes in Action

Our athletes have had a busy month with tons of exciting activities, classes, competitions, and events. Check out some highlights of their fun and accomplishments.

Intramural Football

It's football season and our new intramural season has officially kicked off! Nearly 2,200 athletes and coaches from high schools, elementary schools, parks, and agencies are participating in flag football this month at La Villita Park. The season will wrap up with a special skills competition for participants.

LAZ Golf Outing

Thank you to LAZ Parking for hosting their 11th Annual Golf Tournament benefiting Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children’s Charities. On September 7, we were at Cantigny Golf Club with some of our athletes who had an incredible time! Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

The Chicago Air and Water Show

Once again this year our athletes were special guests for the Chicago Air and Water Show at North Avenue Beach. Athletes from Douglass Park, Independence Park, Kosciuszko Park, Mt. Greenwood Park, Welles Park, and West Pullman Park joined us. Everyone had a great day watching the show and spending time with friends. What an exciting day!

Fleet Feet and Saucony provide shoes for SOC/SCC athletes

Last month, our friends at Fleet Feet Chicago and Saucony teamed up to donate 200 pairs of running shoes to our athletes. On August 17, athletes came to Hope Student Athletic Center, where Fleet Feet Chicago team members made sure their new shoes fit properly before sending them home with some free gifts.

We are so grateful for this generous gift and for a terrific event! Thank you to Fleet Feet Chicago and Saucony for your commitment to helping our athletes succeed.

State Competitions

Our teams have been traveling all around Illinois over the past month for State competitions. On August 18–19, 37 athletes and coaches were in Bloomington for State Tennis.

Our athletes brought home 10 first place medals, 7 second place, 5 third place, 2 fourth place, and 1 fifth place.

On September 8–10 we had groups of athletes in two different cities for two different sports! 182 athletes and coaches competed in the State Softball Tournament in Springfield. There, our teams scored 2 second place, 3 third place, and 4 fourth place medals. In the individual competitions, 6 athletes won first place, 5 won second place, 7 won third place, 4 won fourth place, and 2 won fifth place.

Meanwhile, 45 athletes teed up in Decatur for the State Golf Competition. 5 athletes came in first place, 11 in second place, 4 in third place, 5 in fourth place, 2 in fifth place, and 1 in sixth place.

Everyone performed incredibly well and had a lot of fun! Congratulations to all who competed!
