My wife led a retreat this weekend and I enrolled a new class that begins on Thursday. I have a book to read before class that I don't think I can finish by then because my schedule is so full but I am excited to be taking this one.

Yesterday, I co-led a workshop for my local BNI chapter and last week, I spoke to two groups for AARP in Western North Carolina. I like doing public speaking and, frankly, am good at it.

Job Search Networking Like The Big Boys and The Big Girls
If you are an average performer, you have been conditioned to act fearfully when the subject of networking comes up. "My manager will find out," translates into "I will get into trouble," in too many peoples' minds. It is as though their manager or boss is some omnipotent or omniscient being with the ability to know everything about your behavior and thoughts and find out you were considering a job change.
This might have been true in The Stone Ages when people did not own mobile phones and you might have received a call on your office line. A particular employer I worked for used to listen in randomly to employee calls to gain an advantage with his staff and confront people. He ruled by fear and staff came and went.
Things are different but attitudes are slow to adapt to the new facts. Most staff is still afraid to network even though the likelihood of being exposed is almost non-existent (if you use your office email address, you can be exposed by some systems).
But look at what your firm and its management do. How do they network? How do they find opportunities? What do the big girls and the big boys do that you don't?

What Are You Waiting For?

I have delayed making change in my life much too often. I can't say that was true with my decision to become a coach. After all, I met my wife in graduate school when I was thinking of becoming a psychotherapist. I decided, with her, to wait and continue in my old work. It was a good decision that allowed us to have our son, buy a pay for a house and live life nicely.
As I got older, I realized that I had some left over business to attend to and sat with her and told her that I did not have much time left in my old career, maybe one more year, before I would make a transition. No longer motivated to become a therapist, I would coach.
I'm not sure she thought I was serious about it because as I approached my completion and transition date, she kept asking me whether I was actually going to leave headhunting.

I have spent the most time with Lance Secretan's book. It is a great and inspiring read.
