Ka'ila Farrell-Smith is a contemporary Klamath Modoc visual artist, writer and activist based in Modoc Point, Oregon. The conceptual framework of her studio practice focuses on channeling research through a creative flow of experimentation and artistic playfulness. Now, in 2024, represented by the Russo Lee Gallery in Portland, OR, she’s had her work exhibited in museums all over the country, including at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. One of her pieces is also in the Portland Art Museum’s permanent collection. In this interview with Art Restart, Ka’ila explains why she left the artistic hub of Portland to live in rural southern Oregon and describes how her activism and artistry have evolved hand-in-hand.

You have until July 22, 2024, to share your comments. There are resources for you to review changes and ways to submit your comments to FEMA on this change. Call for Applications: The Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant
The 2024 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Application is open! Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or O-1 visa holders, aged 25 or older, and must submit as an individual. The Arts Writers Grant supports both emerging and established writers who are writing about contemporary visual art (art made since World War II). Work in adjacent fields—architecture, dance, film, media, music, performance, sound, etc.—will only be considered if they directly and significantly engage the discourses and concerns of contemporary visual art.

Music to Life, invites musicians to apply to its online incubator program - the Musician Changemaker Accelerator (MCA) Academy. The MCA is a fully underwritten 6.5-month social change business accelerator for 10 competitively selected socially conscious musicians from around the country. Taught and facilitated by experts, musician participants come away with a concrete plan for their community change idea, local partner connections, program development skills, and funding to execute their projects.

The Parent Grant is a four-week residency for an artist with at least one dependent child under the age of 18. Artists may choose to work in intaglio, letterpress, papermaking, screenprinting, photography, or ceramics. Stipend can be used towards childcare and parents are able to request to bring their children with them during the residency.

Call for Applications: Sawtooth 2024-2025 Residencies in Ceramics and Woodworking
The Artist in Residence Program at Sawtooth School for Visual Art (“Sawtooth”) is designed to encourage and enhance the creative, intellectual, professional, and personal growth of emerging studio artists. It is a period for artists to focus intensely on their work, explore new ideas and techniques, and push their work to new levels. Community involvement, professional development, and self-exploration are at the core of Sawtooth’s goals for residents. The Ceramics Residency program is a one-year commitment. Three residents, two in wood firing and one in electric/gas firing, are chosen by the Director of Ceramics along with a rotating jury. Sawtooth’s Wood Fire Residency program provides a year-long concentration dedicated to expanding one's portfolio of wood fired works. Wood fire residents should have a strong and developed body of wood fired work, have previous experience firing wood kilns, feel comfortable directing firings, possess a strong work ethic, and have a desire to work within a community setting.
