Catch 22: Georgia Tech football's Clinton Lynch continues to elude opponents, make big plays
Leading up to his legendary "Rumble in the Jungle," Muhammad Ali issued the following about himself and his opponent George Foreman:
"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee/His hands can't hit what his eyes can't see/Now you see me, now you don't/George thinks he will, but I know he won't."
Georgia Tech redshirt sophomore A-back
Clinton Lynch can kind of relate to Ali. Opponents have barely been able to hit him and, in fact, have covered him as if they can't see him at all.
Over the last three games the 6-0, 187-pounder has not only scored on long pass plays but has been wide open prior to receiving the ball.
Lynch's latest disappearing-then-reappearing act came with the Jackets at their 17, down 10-0 and less than three minutes remaining in the opening stanza this past Saturday afternoon at North Carolina.
No. 22 in white lined up to the far right. As quarterback
Justin Thomas took the snap, he took a step right as if to run the option with back to B-back
Dedrick Mills, who was lined up behind him. Lynch also a step left as if preparing to block, then gunned it up field, blowing past a pair of Carolina defenders. Thomas stopped, set and hit a wide-open Lynch in stride. UNC senior corner
Des Lawrence actually caught Lynch but, completely intent on stripping the ball, allowed him to slip away. It was clear sailing the final 48 yards as only teammate
Qua Searcy was anywhere near Lynch as he ran to paydirt, getting the Jackets back in the game at 10-7.
The play jump-started Tech's offense, which had punted on its first two possessions, running a total of eight plays and gaining a total of 31 yards. The Jackets wound up racking up 518 yards of offense and averaging 7.6 yards play in the 48-20 loss.

Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference Previewing Virginia Tech
Opening Statement:
"
Clearly the North Carolina game wasn't what we had hoped for. We certainly expect and would like to play better than we did in that game, especially defensively. We put that behind us, try to learn from it, move on and get ready to play a really good Virginia Tech team on the road Saturday. I think Blacksburg is probably one of the tougher places to play in our league. They're always really physical on defense and have a lot of good athletes. Their quarterback is playing at a really high level, they've got a good running back, good receivers and it will be a stiff challenge for us up there on the road."
On Virginia Tech's defense:
"They're really athletic on defense. The kid, No. 60 [Woody Baron] is all over the place when you turn the tape on him. He's a heck of a player and he's been playing for I think three years now and I think he's playing his best football by far. The other kid [Ken Ekanem] that has been playing defensive end, he's played a lot. They're very talented on defense, they've got a couple of probable NFL prospects at linebacker and they're usually pretty good in the secondary."
On what makes Virginia Tech's defense effective:
"I think they're really physical, around the ball they create a lot of negative plays. Historically, they've created a lot of turnovers, a lot of sacks, a lot of shortage plays. When you do that, they create a lot of field position and a lot of opportunities for their offense."
On Virginia Tech's defensive identity:
"They're very aggressive and they've got good players. I think Bud [Foster] does a very good job; he has been doing it for a long time. They are who they are, they've got an identity and that's the way they play."
On one thing that could help the Georgia Tech defense:
"To get off the field on third down. It creates almost all the problems. Not all of them, but it would solve a lot if we could get off the field on third down."
On Georgia Tech's pass rush:
"There were plenty of times in the North Carolina game that we sent five [on pass rush], there were times we sent six. You also got to give the other team credit sometimes, if they're pretty good and you send six, they get [the ball] out fast.
"It comes back to what you're talking about, you've got to cover a little better. You've just got to tie it all together. You've got to know when you've got six or seven blitzing, that it's going to come out faster hopefully. If you've only got four rushing, it's not going to come out as fast most of the time.
"We've gotten as good pressure defensively, if you break it down and look at it, we can get as good pressure when we send three as when we send four or five. It just seems to be that's kind of the way that's been."
On how Georgia Tech's defense can bounce back:
"I think here is what has to happen - no matter what sport you play or what you're doing or anything else, when a game like that happens and you play that poorly, you have to be able to look at the tape and you have to say, 'I know why this happened. It was because my eyes were in the wrong place.'
"Where you run into problems is if a guy comes out and he doesn't know why it happened. He's thinking, 'Man, I'm doing what they're asking me to do and this isn't working.' This is where you run into problems. I think as long as kids or people or players or whatever can look at the tape and see what should be happening and then, with a modicum [of thought can say] 'I could do that, I just didn't.
"If I'm supposed to have my eyes, if I'm supposed to be three technique on the guard and I'm getting reached by the center, then I'm not looking at the guard. My eyes are in the backfield or whatever.' That doesn't have anything to do with physical ability always, it has to do with leverage and we've got to coach them. If they're not getting it done, we've got to coach them better."
On Virginia Tech's offense:
""It's different from what they've done. They're very similar to North Carolina in a lot of facets, a lot of the same plays. All those teams anymore, for lack of a better term, I call it the 'NCAA offense' [that] the majority of teams run. {Shot]gun stuff, zone reads, quarterback powers, bubble screens, all the stuff all the teams run."
Virginia Tech Head Coach Justin Fuente's
Press Conference Previewing
"
We get to come back home to a tough matchup with Georgia Tech, Coach (Paul) Johnson and his triple-option attack. He will really put pressure on you in all ways. It forces you to be efficient offensively with limited opportunities. Defensively you need to get good tacklers and have your eyes in the right spot and defend four downs. It will be a great team challenge and our kids will be looking forward to it. "
On if he has a reference point similar to how GA Tech plays:
"
We played Navy last year at Memphis. At TCU, we played Air Force. The triple-option attack forces you to make the most of your time on offense. I am not suggesting that it is a greater challenge on offense than on defense. I understand that part of the reason it is challenging defensively is you don't see it every day. Georgia Tech is very good at it. Coach Johnson and his staff have the answers. When you give them something they can certainly counterpunch. It is certainly an obstacle. "
On On if he appreciates an offense being run like that and if he incorporates any of it
"
We try to incorporate it; but certainly not to this extent. I have always felt like having an element of that in your offense is advantageous. We have kept it in so far at every spot along the way. As coaches we always respect for guys who have answers. You need adjustments to every problem. You need to be able to fix it. Georgia Tech has that ability. They have been doing it for so long that they are comfortable with the nuances they need to tweak to be successful. "

ESPN's ACC Week 10 Power Rankings:
Clemson, Louisville comfortable at top
Both ACC playoff candidates did exactly what they needed to do in advance of the next College Football Playoff rankings release. Clemson and Louisville combined to beat their Saturday opponents 106-7.
.
#1 Clemson Tigers (8-0, 5-0)
It would be a surprise to see Alabama drop from the top spot, but Clemson showed it is worthy of the No. 1 ranking. The defense shut out a challenging Syracuse offense, and the Tigers offense rolled the Orange even after Deshaun Watson left. Watson iced his shoulder after the win but said he wasn't feeling any pain.
2. Louisville Cardinals (7-1, 5-1) LW, Beat Virginia 32-25
The Cardinals must have felt a little disrespected when they learned of their No. 7 ranking, and they took their frustrations out on Boston College. If the selection committee wants to see Louisville dominate inferior competition, that is exactly what happened Saturday.
3. Virginia Tech Hokies
(5-3, 2-3) LW: Lost to Clemson 37-34
Road games have posed problems for the Hokies, but they're done visiting ACC opponents. Virginia Tech escaped Duke with a close win, but it didn't come without a cost. Cornerback Greg Stroman was injured, and safety Terrell Edmunds will miss the first half next week with a targeting penalty.
4. N. Carolina Tar Heels (6-2, 4-1)
LW: Beat Pittsburgh 39-36
What might have been if the Tar Heels didn't have to play their most important game of the season in a hurricane? The offense continues to click with Mitch Trubisky and Elijah Hood, and the defense has emerged as a solid unit. Teams are averaging just 15.6 points against North Carolina in its last three games..
5. Florida State Seminoles (6-2, 4-1)
LW: Bye Week
Saturday's comeback win prevents the Seminoles from having a losing record in their last eight conference games. Once again the team showed the necessary fourth-quarter resolve, but it was hardly a clean effort. FSU continues to confound its fans with inconsistent performances.
#6 Miami Hurricanes (5-3, 2-2) LW: Lost to Virginia Tech 39-36
A tough October took its toll on Miami, which lacks depth in Mark Richt's first season, but the Hurricanes were able to emerge from their funk. Pitt's defense was the perfect cure for Miami's offensive malaise. Miami won four straight, then lost four straight, and now it can end with four straight wins again.

* Georgia Tech football plays the second of back-to-back road games at nationally ranked ACC foes when it visits No. 18/22 Virginia Tech on Saturday.
* The Yellow Jackets opened their grueling November slate with a 48-20 defeat at No. 18/17 North Carolina last Saturday. Georgia Tech racked up 518 yards of total offense and averaged 7.6 yards per play but allowed 636 yards (9.1 per play) and managed only 13 points in six trips in the red zone.
* Georgia Tech remains on the verge of becoming bowl eligible for the 19th time in the last 20 seasons, as it needs only one win in its final three regular-season games (at Virginia Tech, vs. Virginia, at Georgia) to gain postseason eligibility.
* If history is any indication, Saturday's game will likely be a tight one. Each of the last eight matchups between the Yellow Jackets and Hokies have been decided by nine points or less, seven of the last eight have been decided by seven points or less and three of the last four have been decided by three points or less. Since 2008, the average margin of victory in eight GT-VT contests has been 4.9 points.
* Georgia Tech, which rushed for 374 yards last Saturday at North Carolina and 341 yards the previous week against Duke, has climbed to first in the ACC and 10th nationally in rushing offense at 261.7 yards per game. Due in large part to facing two of the nation's stingiest rushing defenses in Boston College (107.3 ypg) and Clemson (132.8 ypg) over the first four games of the season, the Jackets entered the month of October ranked 36th nationally in rushing (216.8 ypg).
* Sophomore A-back
Clinton Lynch has scored at least one touchdown in each of Georgia Tech's last four games and is averaging a whopping 17.2 yards per touch over 40 touches this season (28 rushes for 298 yards, 12 receptions for 389 yards).
Scouting The Hokies
* VT (AP No. 18, Coaches No. 22) faces GT (11/12) at home after four ACC road games in its last five outings.
* Last week, the Hokies made their debut in the College Football Playoff rankings (No. 19).
* The Hokies have won six of their last seven contests and are coming off a 24-21 win at Duke (11/5).
* Virginia Tech is 9-3 in ACC play against GT, winning five of the last six meetings.
* Justin Fuente seeks to push his record to 5-0 at Lane Stadium. VT has already extended the longest active bowl streak in America to 24 straight.
* VT sits atop the ACC Coastal race at 5-1 and already owns a 34-3 win over 5-1 UNC (10/8).
* The Hokies are averaging 444.4 ypg of total offense. The school record of 451.8 was set in 1999. Georgia Tech is ninth in the ACC, allowing 405.4 ypg.
* TE
Bucky Hodges (33) and WRs
Isaiah Ford (50) and
Cam Phillips (36) have combined for 119 receptions for 1,753 yards with 13 TDs. That trio has accounted for 72.6% of VT's receptions, 77.6% of its receiving yards and 59.1% of its TD receptions.

Volleyball Falls To Pitt, 3-1.
Travel To North Carolina on Friday
The Georgia Tech volleyball team (20-6, 11-3 ACC) fell, 3-1, against a good Pitt team(19-7, 10-4) on Sunday afternoon at O'Keefe Gym, snapping a 10-match winning streak for the Yellow Jackets.
Tied 15-15 in game two, the Panthers rattled off five straight to make it 20-15. Pitt stayed in rhythm and went up 23-17 before winning the set 25-18.
The Jackets regrouped in the break and turned a 13-12 lead into a 17-12 advantage behind three kills from Teegan Van Gunst. Georgia Tech kept
the momentum and put the set away on another kill by Teegan Van Gunst to win 25-22.
Georgia Tech battled back into the fourth game. Pitt had set point 24-19 when the Jackets marched back to tie the game 24-24 thanks in part to three blocks. The Panthers dug deep and scored the final two points to win 26-24.
"I think we finished it out playing some pretty good volleyball," head coach Michelle Collier said. "I think the first two games, offensively, we just didn't do a good job but that started with our serve-receive. We needed to stay right there with them, I think that was a big difference in the match on how they served as we were just a little uncomfortable with our serve-receive.
"I'm very proud of how we fought; it was a great fight at the end there putting ourselves in the position to go to the fifth game. We knew that they're good team. I was pretty pleased with the way that we finished fighting."
Up Next:
The Jackets hit the road for the first time in two weeks when they travel to North Carolina. Georgia Tech takes on NC State on Friday at 7 p.m., before squaring off against No. 12 North Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. Both matches will air on the ACC Network Extra. The NC State volleyball team (16-10, 9-5) put the finishing touches on an excellent road trip to the state of Florida with a 3-1 win against Miami Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile,
No. 12 North Carolina stormed back from an 0-2 deficit on Sunday afternoon to defeat No. 10 Florida State, 3-2. With the win, the Tar Heels distance themselves at the top of the ACC standings at 21-3 (13-1 ACC), while FSU falls to 18-5 (11-3 ACC). The Heels first host Clemson on Friday night, the first of six straight home games in Chapel Hill to close out the regular season.

Georgia Tech men's basketball downs Shorter,
95-87, in exhibition
Tadric Jackson scored a team-high 27 points, nine of them in overtime, lifting Georgia Tech past Shorter, 95-87, Saturday night in an exhibition game at McCamish Pavilion. Center Ben Lammers added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets, who open their regular season at home (8 p.m.) this Friday night against Tennessee Tech. Freshman Josh Okogie scored 16 points and Quinton Stephens chipped in 11 to help the Jackets avoid defeat to the Division II Hawks from Rome, Ga.
 |
|
 |
Junior Guard Tadrick Jackson |
Phil Taylor, a former Florida International guard, poured in 37 points for the Hawks,
hitting seven three-point field goals while going 12-for-29 from the floor, while
Alijah Bennett
added 15 and
Eric Ross
scored 11. Shorter made 14 three-point field goals in 38 attempts.
In its first public contest under new head coach Josh Pastner, Tech rallied from a nine-point deficit in the final 6:06 to force the extra period, and Jackson scored six points in the final 2:44, including a pair of game-tying free throws with 12 seconds on the clock. In overtime, Tech took charge by scoring the first seven points, five of those by Jackson. "We were a different team from how we'd been practicing and how we played last Saturday. I was like `who are these guys?,'" said Pastner. "That's why this game was important to us. We need to be able to play under the lights just to get the jitters out. Josh Okogie and (freshman guard) Justin (Moore) were huffing and puffing through the first two minutes of the game. They were exhausted. They were so gassed up to play that it wore them out."
Once in overtime, Tech's running game took off. Okogie made two free throws less than a minute in to snap the tie, then Jackson converted a drive for a basket and a foul shot for an 83-78 lead. The junior from Tifton, Ga., followed a Shorter turnover with a layup at 3:01 to make the score 85-78, then answered a Shorter basket with a pair of free throws at 2:30 to give the Jackets an 87-80 lead. Tech got a layup by Okogie, a dunk by Jackson and two buckets by Stephens in the final 2:05.
Lammers and Jackson both went 9-for-10 from the floor for the Yellow Jackets.
"This was good for us. I'm glad we won, but there's a lot of teaching points here," added Pastner. "The 20 turnovers were a lot, obviously, and we didn't make a three. I love the fact that we got to the free throw line. Our goal was to make more free throws than they attempted, which we did. We didn't do well on our assists because we were pounding the ball. Our cuts were too slow. We weren't violently cutting. We were plus-one on the 50-50 balls; they beat us to a lot of balls. That's why the score is what it is. They kicked our butt in a lot of 50-50 ball areas. But we found a way to win and we made some free throws, especially down the stretch."
Up next, the regular season gets under way as the Jackets host Tennessee Tech in a Salute to Service game. Tipoff is 8:00pm this Friday, November 11 at McCamish Pavilion. You can hear the game on 680 AM | 93.7 FM

Georgia Tech Women's Basketball Opens Season Friday At McCamish Against Samford
If the look of Zaire O'Neil is taken as a predictor, then Georgia Tech fans are going to enjoy women's basketball because the junior forward can hardly stop smiling when talking about a season that's (a few days) away.
She looks better on the court, too, and when the Yellow Jackets tip off Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Samford in McCamish Pavilion, O'Neil won't be the only player who's cranked up her game. There's going to be plenty different about Tech.
Junior point guard
Imani Tilford has polished up her jumper, and the infusion of three transfers and four freshmen may afford head coach
MaChelle Joseph more talent and energy to work with than in a few years.
"Every one of the 14 players brings something unique to the table and we all work really well together," O'Neil said. "I think it starts off the court. We really enjoy each other."
The Jackets won't easily replace the scoring and all-around play of
Aaliyah Whiteside, nor the grit and rebounding of
Roddreka Rogers. They graduated, and the departures of senior
Irene Gari and point guard
Ciani Cryor left spots as well.
After playing 24 games last season, however, O'Neil is likely to offer more. Joseph has complimented Zaire's re-made physique, the spring in her step and the force with which she's been practicing. It wasn't there after she missed the first nine games last fall following knee surgery in the spring of 2015.
The 5-foot-11 player who averaged 6.6 points and 2.9 rebounds last season has streamlined herself. With the help of strength and conditioning coach
Scott McDonald, this version of O'Neil may top the freshman edition who averaged 11.3 and 5.8 while starting 21 games and playing in 31.
"Last season I played through a lot of pain," O'Neil said. "I might have rushed it a little bit, but I actually took some time off this summer where I did more physical training but not as much running so I gave my knees a break.

Kenny Thorne says: "A couple of guys finished the fall season on a good note. Andrew Li went undefeated in singles and doubles for the weekend. He fought well today and executed some patterns he has been working on. Andrew and Cole worked well together all weekend in doubles. They returned well and kept pressure on their opponents every point. Daniel Yun did a better job of staying disciplined in his game style over the weekend. He is a very good athlete and has the potential to play at a high level when locked in. We go into the off season soon and some work needs to get done. The team season will be here soon and we are looking forward to it."
