Tough Runner
Dedrick Mills, His Role Expanding In Georgia Tech Football's Offense, Explains Why He Runs So Hard
By Andy Dimitrov,
Georgia Tech Football
Play-By-Play Announcer
Dedrick Mills runs hard. That much is obvious. When he carries the ball, Georgia Tech's 5-10, 217-pound freshman B-back prefers punishment over finesse. All young running backs say they love contact. Then some gargantuan ACC lineman, nostrils flaring and ears pinned back, is ready to dish out the true definition of a college football hit, and suddenly that line isn't sung with as much conviction anymore.
But there's a reason head coach
Paul Johnson said that Mills was "better than I expected him to be, and I don't normally say that about a freshman." The Waycross, Ga., native hasn't shied away from the tough yards between the tackles, earning him a growing role in Johnson's option offense.
Against Boston College, Mills became the first true freshman offensive player to start a season opener for Tech since 2008. His play against Clemson
(16 carries, 75 yards, 1 TD) provided one of the few bright spots in a 26-7 loss. His longest run of the night, a 42-yard gash in the third quarter, was wiped out by a penalty. Those numbers are even more impressive considering BC and Clemson ranked first and 20th nationally in yards per carry allowed in 2015.
(He scored three more TDs against Miami, getting named the ACC Freshman of the Week for the second time)
"He's a good player, he's hard to tackle and understands football," Johnson said of Mills, who enrolled at Tech in January.
"Running through arm tackles and stuff -- as Coach is always calling to me, `You're supposed to run through those,'" he said.
Dedrick Mills runs hard. Less obvious is why he runs hard.
Mills considered the question after a recent practice. He began with a theory: he still has some old linebacker's blood in him.
"I was a fan of
Ray Lewis. In high school, I also played linebacker," he explained. "I pretty much had the mindset of playing like Ray Lewis -- `nobody can stop me.'"
Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference Previewing Pitt
Opening Statement:
"
Like I said after the Miami game, you can't turn the ball over and expect to win against a good team. I thought there were some positives in the game. Our offense got back on track after the Clemson game. In the second half, we were better on third down defense.
"We're sitting here 3-2 and we've dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the league but we have lost to two teams that are ranked in the top 10 and both are undefeated."
The stats doen't always tell the whole story. But Pitt leads the ACC in rush defense. Is that a result of playing teams that threw the ball a lot?
"They're always pretty good in rush defense. There's a couple of factors. Certainly, when you look at the stats, a lot of it will depend on who you played. But the other part is they're very aggressive on defense. They blitz a lot and they're good at creating negative plays.
In 2014, this game was coming off two losses and was kind of a springboard for you.
"I haven't talked about the game being a springboard. I did talk on Monday about how in 2014 we lost two games back to back and a lot of people were ready to jump off the ship and we ended up winning 11 games and the Orange Bowl. Who knows? maybe this is the week."
You talk about their aggressive defense and the first thing that comes to mind is Ejuan Price, who leads the nation in sacks and tackles for loss.
"You'd better know where he is because he's a really good speed rusher with several moves.
"He's a guy that, when they get you in definite passing situations that you'd better account for.
Pitt Head Coach
Paul Narduzzi's Press Conference Previewing Georgia Tech
"
It's great to come in here after a win. Going into this week, our focus is on a good Georgia Tech football team. They've had two tough losses to Miami and Clemson-two really good teams. This game will be two evenly matched teams, two very good defenses against the run. They are really good in the red zone. They are strong and sound defensively. Ted Roof is an excellent defensive coordinator. I've known him through the years and have a lot of respect for him. "On offense, Coach [Paul] Johnson is going on his 20th year. He does a tremendous job with the triple option. He's a great coach and obviously heavily involved in what they do offensively. We've got a little extra tape from two games [against the option] that we had last year, Georgia Tech and Navy. "We've done a good job preparing for this in the summer with our 'Panther Period.' Preparing for this type of offense is something we focused on and needed to get good at. I feel much more comfortable coming into this game than we did a year ago. Both teams will have changes. There will be things we need to react to as the game goes on. Our guys have a good idea of what changes we made during the summer and how we will work on defending the option."
On defending quarterback Justin Thomas and the Georgia Tech backfield:
"He's their second-leading carrier. The leader is Dedrick Mills, the freshman, a special player as well. We have to be prepared for the guy under center and the guy behind him. Those are the two guys who are getting most of the carries. They also have their A-backs, which are two guys on the wings who are constantly going in motion. They have a lot of speed. They can split out and get vertical. They are fast."
On what makes Georgia Tech difficult to defend:
"It's the scheme and the speed together. Speed is one thing-everybody at this level has speed. It's really what they do and how they do it. They are so good at the option. It's not the speed, and Navy proves that. I don't think Navy has the fastest guys in the country. They're not getting a bunch of 4- and 5-star recruits. It's the execution of that offense. When you have the speed and the scheme, it's scary."
On what was accomplished during his "Panther Period" sessions in practice:
"Defensively it was to plan for Georgia Tech. We spent a lot of minutes on Tech going from individual to team situations and working on little things we need to do fundamentally. For example, we need to stop the run. Whether it's a spread offense or a triple offense, we need to make the plays necessary to stop them. We looked at it during the summer just so we could get our kids further along. Offensively, we worked on a three-man front. They see a four-man front every day, so it was important to get them to focus on stuff we normally don't see when we play our offense against our defense."
ESPN's ACC Football Power Rankings: Week 5. Clemson back at the top
With an impressive win against Louisville that might have locked up the division, Clemson moves back into the top spot, where the Tigers have not been since Week 1. North Carolina swapped spots with Florida State, which continues to fall in the power rankings from its peak spot at the top to its new low at #6.
#1 Clemson Tigers (5-0, 2-0)
LW - Beat Louisville 42-36
The ACC still belongs to the Tigers. Saturday's victory was the kind of performance most expected out of the Tigers all season. Louisville tested them, but the Tigers showed a lot of resolve in a win that should seal the Atlantic Division. Moved up to #3 in the national rankings.
2. Louisville Cardinals (4-1, 2-1) LW, Lost at Clemson 36-42
.
The Cardinals do not drop far. It's clear Louisville is one of the country's best teams, and it just has the misfortune of sharing a division with another. While the ACC ship has probably sailed, an 11-1 finish would include a win at Houston and put the Cards squarely in the playoff conversation. Only dropped to #7 in the national rankings.
3. North Carolina Tar Heels
(4-1, 2-0) LW: Beat FSU 37-35
Larry Fedora has his signature win as the Tar Heels' coach, ending Florida State's 22-game home winning streak. The focus has been on the Atlantic Division, but UNC has the look of a team that once again will garner playoff consideration.
4. Miami Hurricanes (4-0, 1-0)
LW: Beat Georgia Tech 35-21
There was concern Miami's young defense would struggle with Georgia Tech's option, but the opportunistic group led the Hurricanes. Now can Mark Richt end the six-game losing streak to a sinking Florida State?
5. Virginia Tech Hokies (3-1, 1-0)
LW: Bye Week
The Heels and 'Canes are getting most of the attention in the Coastal, but the Hokies lurk. This has the look of a classic Virginia Tech team on defense and special teams, and Justin Fuente's offense is coming along faster than many expected.
#6 Florida State Seminoles (3-2, 0-2) LW - Lost to UNC 35-37
At 0-2 in the conference, things are going down south quickly in Tallahassee. The Seminoles' ACC title hopes are pretty much over at this point, thanks to a brutal defense and inconsistent offense.4

McAuley Aquatic Center to Host 2017
ACC Swimming and Diving Championships
The 2016-17 Men's and Women's Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at the McAuley Aquatic Center in February, the ACC office announced on Tuesday morning.
The women's swimming and diving championships, as well as the men's diving championships will be held over a three-day span from Feb. 13-16. The men's swimming championships will take place from Feb. 27 to Mar. 2. Georgia Tech welcomed the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships most recently in 2015 and also served as host for the events in 2005, 2008 and 2011.
McAuley Aquatic Center hosted the 2015-16 NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships last season, as well as the NCAA Zone Diving Qualifier. It was the second time in program history that the NCAA Championships were hosted in the facility, the first time being in 2006. In the summer of 2016, it played host to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swimming and Diving teams before they competed in Rio.
The aquatic center, located on the west side of the Georgia Tech campus was the site of the swimming and diving competition for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. It was named the "best collegiate competition swimming pool" by College Ranker in March 2016.
The ACC will announce additional details, including ticket info for all championships, at a future date. Continue to check
theACC.com.
Meanwhile, both the men's and women's swimming teams gor Georgia Tech will be in action in one week, as the Yellow Jackets trek north to face off against Harvard in a dual meet this Friday, Oct. 7, at 3 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass. The two teams will then turn around to take on Boston College and Pittsburgh in an ACC tri-meet on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

After back-to-back losses to top-15 opponents, Georgia Tech football looks to snap the two-game skid on Saturday at Pittsburgh.
* Last Saturday, Georgia Tech outplayed No. 14 Miami (Fla.) for much of the game but the Hurricanes returned two Yellow Jacket fumbles for touchdowns during a three-play span in the second quarter and Tech went on to suffer a 35-21 defeat.
*
The Yellow Jackets outgained Miami by a 361-355 margin and doubled the Canes' time of possession 39:54-20:06.
* Despite playing its last four games at home, Georgia Tech has endured a grueling schedule over the first five weeks of the season. The Yellow Jackets are one of only five teams that have played two opponents that are ranked in the top 10 of this week's Associated Press college football top 25 poll (joining Appalachian State, Auburn, Oklahoma and Rutgers).
* Also punctuating the strength of Georgia Tech's early-season schedule is the fact that each of its first three ACC opponents currently rank among the top 12 nationally in total defense (Boston College - first, Miami - seventh, Clemson - 12th).
* Although they stand at 1-2 in conference play, the Yellow Jackets remain very much in contention for the ACC Coastal Division title. In fact, two seasons ago, Georgia Tech dropped consecutive league games to Duke and North Carolina but rebounded to win the division title with a 6-2 ACC record. Tech's first game after the back-to-back losses was a 56-28 romp at Pitt (Oct. 25, 2014).
* Saturday's contest at Pitt is Georgia Tech's first true road game of the season. The only time that the Yellow Jackets have played away from Bobby Dodd Stadium was in their season-opening 17-14 win over Boston College in Dublin, Ireland
Scouting Pitt
* University of Pittsburgh's Jester Weah was named Athlete of the Week. Weah led the Pitt football team with 176 receiving yards in a 43-27 win over Marshall Saturday night at Heinz Field. With 1:04 to go in the game, the junior wide receiver pulled in a 54-yard lob from Nathan Peterman for a score to go up 37-27 as the Panthers avoided a scare.
*
The Panthers' stingy ground defense is yielding 69.8 rushing yards per game to rank first in the ACC and fourth nationally. The Yellow Jackets average 226.8 rushing yards, fifth best in the ACC and 28th in the nation.
*
Pitt's
Ejuan Price is making a strong case for All-America and ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. The senior defensive end leads the entire nation in quarterback sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (11.5). Price has logged at least one sack in each contest this season.
*
The Panthers boast one of college football's most dangerous all-purpose players in
Quadree Henderson. The sophomore wide receiver leads the nation in total all-purpose yards (tied) with 937. Henderson's average of 187.4 yards per game leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally.
*
Junior running back
James Conner, who overcame both a knee injury and Hodgkin lymphoma during the past 12 months, is just the fifth player in Pitt history to surpass 3,000 career rushing yards. The Panthers' leading ground-gainer this season with 381 yards, Conner now has 3,022 for his career.

Mills Names ACC Rookie of the Week For Second Time
Tech football's true freshman B-back ran for 99 yards, scored three touchdowns vs. Miami
After rushing for 99 yards, amassing 108 all-purpose yards and scoring three touchdowns against #14 Miami (Fla.), Georgia Tech B-back Dedrick Mills (Waycross, Ga./Ware County) has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week
Mills set new career highs with. his 99 rushing yards
and 108 all-purpose yards against Miami while his three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) matched a career high originally set versus Vanderbilt on Sept. 17.
His career-best 99 rushing yards came on just 19 carries, good for a 5.2-yard average. He scored all three of Georgia Tech's touchdowns on a seven-yard run, nine-yard reception and one-yard run.
For the season, Mills ranks third among NCAA Division I FBS true freshmen with 75.0 rushing yards per game and leads the nation's true freshmen with seven rushing TDs (two more than second-place
Benny Snell of Kentucky) and 12.0 points per game. Among all FBS players, Mills is tied for fifth in scoring and seventh in rushing touchdowns.
The ACC Rookie of the Week award is Mills' second in four career games. He also earned the recognition following his three-touchdown performance against Vandy on Sept. 17.
Mills and the Yellow Jackets (3-2, 1-2 ACC) play their first true road game of the season this Saturday when they travel to Pitt (3-2, 0-1 ACC) for an ACC Coastal Division matchup. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. The game will be televised on the ACC Network (CW 69 in Atlanta).
Georgia Tech returns home on Oct. 15 for a non-conference contest versus Georgia Southern. Kickoff will once again be at 12:30 p.m. and the game will air on the ACC's Regional Sports Network (WUPA in Atlanta). Tickets are available online at

Learning Curve Continues
Pre-season practice begins for Tech basketball, but Pastner and staff still have plenty to learn about Jackets
With so much that is new at every level of the Georgia Tech men's basketball program, the Yellow Jackets looked quite different when pre-season practice began Monday, yet in at least one way head coach Josh Pastner won't change.
He's going to demand that his team push the pace, and not just on offense.
Seniors
Quinton Stephens, Josh Heath, Corey Heyward and
Rand Rowland are back along with juniors
Tadric Jackson and
Ben Lammers, yet they're greenhorns in ways. They combined to average 16.6 points and 10.2 rebounds last season, and besides that, the lay of the land and their teammates are shifting.
The Jackets have four freshmen, two immediately eligible transfers, and second-year freshman
Sylvester Ogbonda, who redshirted last season. That'll be seven new faces on the floor to go along with a new head coach, new assistants, new strength and conditioning coach, new video man and more.
All this might mean, actually, that Pastner will tweak his style. In seven years running Memphis, he generally played a tight rotation. Now? Maybe not so much.
"We don't have that margin of error, nor do we have anyone who can put us on their shoulders and carry us to victory," the coach said after a few months observing player workouts and open gyms. "I think for us there are going to be a lot of things that are by committee.
"I'm usually a guy that plays seven or eight guys, but as of this day I'm going to go deeper, because there's not a lot of separation. I'm going to ask the guys that play so hard that we're going to have to give them rest at times."
Tech lost its four leading scorers to graduation or expired eligibility, and flexible graduate student
James White saw his eligibility expire as well. Plus, point guard
Travis Jorgenson has left basketball after battling injury issues.
That leaves Heath, who started 21 games last season and averaged 2.7 points and 2.8 assists, Heyward (8 games, 0.6 points) and freshman
Justin Moore at point guard.
Not that the title seems to mean much to Pastner.
"I've never been a traditional guy with that offensively," he said of point guard. "I like to play with our pace and space. Different guys can bring the ball up the floor. This year's team ... I think we've got good length, but we're not a big team. There's not one thing where you say we're really good in this area."

straight season. This year's roster boasts seven international student-athletes in addition to athletes from seven different states. Returning to the roster from international waters are Katarina Vuckovic (Serbia), Elo Edeferioka (Nigeria), Simina Avram (Romania), Chelsea Guimaraes (Portugal) and Antonio Peresson (Italy). The Yellow Jackets added two student-athletes from foreign countries this season in Anne Francoise Diouf (Senegal) and Francesca Pan (Italy). In keeping with tradition, Tech had two student-athletes compete for their home countries over the summer. Both Guimaraes and Pan represented Tech in the U20 European Championships competing for Portugal and Italy, respectively.
Earlier this summer, Tech released its competitive 2016-17 schedule which features 16 home games and contests against 17 postseason participants from 2015-16.
The Yellow Jackets return a solid core from last season. This season's lone senior, Katarina Vuckovic, returns as the leading scorer and rebounder from last season having averaged 8.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Peresson will accompany Vuckovic from a starting role last season. Peresson appeared in 32 games and averaged 7.2 ppg and hit 34.6 percent from three-point range.
Zaire O'Neil returns after seeing action in 24 games last season, while Chelsea Guimaraes provides depth after seeing action in 30 games. Imani Tilford is back to run Tech's offense at the point after starting 20 contests last season.
