Austin Honored by ACC for Second-Straight Week
Junior cornerback's interception keyed Georgia Tech football's comeback win at Georgia
For the second-straight week, Georgia Tech junior cornerback Lance Austin has been named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Austin's latest honor comes after his fourth-quarter interception set up the game-winning touchdown drive in Georgia Tech's 28-27 win over archrival Georgia on Saturday.
With Georgia Tech trailing, 27-21, with less than four minutes to go in the contest and Georgia threatening to put the game away with a score and/or by milking out the clock, Austin made a diving interception on a tipped pass by UGA quarterback
Jacob Eason. Austin's third interception of the season gave the Yellow Jackets possession at UGA's 46 yard line with 3:39 to go in the ballgame.
Eight plays later, A-back
Qua Searcy scored the game-winning touchdown on a six-yard run with just 30 seconds left to play.
Austin also added six tackles in the heart-stopping win at Georgia.
His crucial interception at UGA was his second in as many weeks. In Georgia Tech's home finale versus Virginia on Nov. 19, Austin returned an interception 24 yards for a game-clinching touchdown with 4:03 to go in the Yellow Jackets' 31-17 victory.
Thanks to his efforts over the past two games, Austin is the first Yellow Jacket to be named ACC Defensive Back of the Week in consecutive weeks since
Jemea Thomas was recognized for his performances versus Virginia and Pittsburgh on Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, 2013, respectively.
The ACC weekly honor is the third of Austin's career. In addition to being named ACC Defensive Back of the Week each of the past two weeks, he was recognized as the ACC Specialist of the Week following his 78-yard return of a blocked field goal that lifted the Yellow Jackets to their famous "Miracle on Techwood Drive" walkoff win over No. 9 Florida State on Oct. 24 of last season.
Remarkably, an Austin has earned each of the last three ACC Defensive Back of the Week awards. Lance's twin brother,
Lawrence Austin, was given the honor after intercepting two passes in the Jackets' 30-20 win at No. 18-ranked Virginia Tech on Nov. 12.
Stewart Mandell With FOX Sports Projects Georgia Tech To TaxSlayer Bowl
If you're trying to figure out where Georgia Tech is heading this bowl season, at the point, you can blindfold yourself and toss a handful of sites up in the air and see which one you can grab. The list improved significantly after the big win Saturday in Athens. Prior to that, it looked like a cold Military Bowl in DC. But now, the Jackets have moved up to an ACC Tier 1 Bowl. Some, like FOX Sports has Tech headed to Jacksonville on New Year's Eve to face Kentucky in the TaxSlayer Bowl, formerly called the Gator Bowl. And, the way the Wildcats dispatched Louisville last weekend, that would be an exciting match up. Others project a third trip in recent years to El Paso for the Sun Bowl or a first trip to New York City for the Pinstripe Bowl. Possibly a first trip to Charlotte for the Belk Bowl. Everything will become clear after the Championship Games this weekend and specifically on Sunday night at 8:00 when the official bowl lineups are announced.

ESPN's ACC Week 12 Power Rankings: Who's No. 2?
Who's No. 2 in the ACC? Will the No. 2 team get a New Year's Six bowl bid? That's the biggest drama in the final regular-season ACC power rankings, with Clemson running away at No. 1 again.

2. FSU Seminoles (9-3, 5-3)
LW, Beat Florida 31-13
Speaking of rivalry streaks, the Seminoles made it four straight against Florida, making FSU a combined 8-0 against its in-state rivals (UF and Miami) since 2013. Could the Noles edge Louisville for a New Year's Six spot?als' playoff hopes alive.
3. Louisville Cardinals

ACC Championship Game Upset Watch: Can Virginia Tech
pull the stunner
on Clemson?
Clemson is a 10-point favorite over Virginia Tech in the ACC championship game. ESPN's FPI metric gives the Tigers an 84 percent chance to win. But championship games are never slam dunks, so the Tigers have to beware of the upset. Especially because a loss here would end their College Football Playoff hopes. Virginia Tech is vastly improved in just about every area this season, averaging over 450 yards per game on offense -- the first time that has happened since 1999. Quarterback Jerod Evans has been the biggest reason why, but he also has a trio of receivers who can make plays: Isaiah Ford, Cam Phillips and Bucky Hodges have combined for 169 catches, 2,323 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns in 2016. Hodges is the biggest X factor among them all. Though he's listed as a tight end, he mostly plays receiver and has been a matc hup nightmare for just about every team he's faced because of his size (6-foot-7, 245 pounds) and athleticism. The turnover battle is another big factor. In three losses this year, Virginia Tech was minus-8 in turnover margin. The Hokies rank second-to-last in the country in lost fumbles with 17. Evans is a 3,000-yard passer, with 26 touchdowns to five interceptions, but he also ranks at the bottom of the country in lost fumbles by quarterbacks with four. Clemson has had its own issues hanging onto the football (23 turnovers), especially in the red zone. In a loss to Pitt, the Tigers had three turnovers; in close wins over NC State and Louisville, Clemson gave the ball away a combined nine times. For two teams that have had issues in this department, the turnover battle could play an even bigger role than it usually does. One other key point to acknowledge: Both defenses have been exceptional in key areas. Clemson leads the nation in the percent of plays that have gone for zero or negative yards against them (69.8 percent); Virginia Tech ranks No. 6 (61.6 percent).
Georgia Tech swimming and diving continues to grow as one both in and out of the pool
This being the holiday season, Georgia Tech's swimming and diving teams are no different than you and yours in that they're celebrating. Their family is bigger, though, and it's getting hard to keep track of all the reasons to give thanks.
The Yellow Jackets set 12 school records last weekend in the three-day Georgia Tech Invitational, where Tech swam 53 NCAA 'B' times and posted six zone diving qualifying marks. The men finished third with 1,036.5 points and the women seventh with 513 in the biggest meet of the year short of the ACC and NCAA Championships.
By mid-week, the men moved up nine spots to a No. 15 national ranking in the College Swimming Coaches of America Association poll, and both teams are tracking upward fast.
"We're doing a great job. We've already broken multiple school records, which we don't usually do in the fall," said head coach
Courtney Shealy Hart
. "We're getting better every year and you can see that.
Some emerging leaders in sophomore
Rodrigo Quadros Correia
and redshirt-senior
Chiara Ruiu
are from Brazil and Italy, respectively, so they joined the families of local teammates or former teammates on Thursday for Thanksgiving as if, you know, they're blood relatives.
That theme is real.
Thanksgiving is not a holiday where they come from, but they get it and they got it before they arrived on The Flats.
Asked whom among 29 men's swimmers and divers and 30 women's student-athletes has emerged into leadership roles, Shealy Hart mentioned several.
That's contagious, and uplifting for teammates as the Jackets' familia is bonding to pull all together as one.
"We hug and kiss," she said with a smile. "I think it's very important for me, and I just want to show my affection to everybody and I think we have that in common."

They say what goes around comes around.
Count Georgia Tech faithful as believers after Saturday afternoon's dramatic 28-27 win over Georgia at Sanford Stadium.
Flash back to Oct. 8. A deflected pass by Georgia Tech's
Corey Griffin set into motion a bizarre series of events that led to a wild, gut-wrenching, 37-34 loss at Pittsburgh. The defeat was the Jackets' third-straight and left them at 3-3 after a 3-0 start.
On Saturday afternoon, a deflected pass -- this time to Jackets' corner
Lance Austin -- set into motion another wild course of events, again resulting in a wild finish.
Austin pulled in the carom of Georgia quarterback
Jacob Eason's pass, which was behind wide receiver
Terry Godwin, who could manage only to get a hand on it. The INT gave the Yellow Jackets, down 27-21, the ball at the UGA 46 yard line with 3:39 to go in the ballgame.
"We were in zone coverage. I think Eason thought it was man," said Austin. "The pass was kind of tipped right to me."
The Jackets would cash in eight plays later. On third-and-goal from the six, A-back
Qua Searcy faked a throw-back pass to quarterback
Justin Thomas, sprinted toward the end zone, went airborn at the three and landed over the goal line. (See photo above)
Harrison Butker's PAT, which pulled him into a tie atop Tech's all-time scoring list, made it 28-27.
That Austin would make a big defensive play hardly came as a surprise. He went into Saturday leading the ACC in pass break-ups (12) and his game-changing interception at UGA was his third of the season, second in the last two games and his third takeaway in last three games, all of which led to touchdowns.
"(No.) 17, somehow he's always around the ball," said linebacker
P.J. Davis, referring to Austin's uniform number. "He's always making big plays," added the senior, who had 12 tackles in his final regular-season game.
Of course, the defense believed that someone was going to make a play. That's the way they've rolled in `16 and the reason the team has rolled over the second half of the season, closing 5-1 after heart-breaking loss at Pittsburgh.
"The defense, all season long, we've been `Keep pushing. Keep pushing,'" said fifth-year senior
Patrick Gamble, who had 11 tackles and one stop behind the line of scrimmage from his defensive tackle position on Saturday. "We kept playing today, we got a chance to win the game for the team and we did it."
Despite a hard push from Georgia's running game throughout the afternoon, Tech's D kept pushing back. UGA running backs
Sony Michel and
Nick Chubb ran for 263 yards (6.3 per rush) but 244 of those came in the first three quarters, as Georgia opened a 27-14 lead.
But Tech's defense kept counting on the one thing it knew would keep morale high.
"Each other," said Gamble. "We didn't want to be that person to let the team down. We knew what we had to do, we believed in ourselves and played our assignments. We played a down at a time and a series at a time. We came out and fought."

Georgia Tech Trio Collects All-ACC Honors
from ACSMA
Three Georgia Tech seniors -- center Freddie Burden, place kicker Harrison Butker and defensive tackle Patrick Gamble earned all-ACC recognition from the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, the ACSMA announced on Monday. Burden was named to the third-team offense while Butker and Gamble received honorable-mention recognition.
Burden is the anchor of a Georgia Tech offensive line that paved the way for the Yellow Jackets to lead the ACC and rank 10th nationally in rushing offense at 257.4 yards per game. He made 11 starts at center (missing one game due to injury) and was named the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after taking eight defenders to the ground while the Jackets rushed for 289 yards and amassed 511 yards of total offense in a 38-7 win over Vanderbilt on Sept. 17.
Butker leads Georgia Tech and ranks among the ACC's top 15 players (all positions) with 76 points this season. He has made 11-of-13 field goals this season (including 6-of-6 from 40-plus yards out), good for a .846 percentage that ranks second in the ACC and 19th nationally, and has been perfect on 43 PAT attempts. Additionally, he has been a huge weapon on kickoffs, with 47-of-64 traditional kickoffs (pooch kicks not included) going for touchbacks and only five kicks returned past the 25 yard line. With 322 career points, he is tied with
Luke Manget (1999-2002) for Georgia Tech's all-time scoring record.
Gamble has recorded 47 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks from his defensive tackle position this season and was particularly impressive during Georgia Tech's three-game winning streak to close the regular season, tallying 19 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in wins over ACC Coastal Division champion Virginia Tech, Virginia and Georgia. He notched a career-high 11 stops in last Saturday's triumph at UGA.
Burden received all-ACC recognition for the third-straight season, as the three-year starter was an honorable-mention selection as a sophomore and junior in 2013 and 2014. The recognition was the first for Butker and Gamble.
Voting for the ACC coaches' all-conference teams will be conducted following Saturday's ACC Championship Game in Orlando and announced on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Georgia Tech football had a number of #ProJackets compete in week 12 of the NFL season
With the college football regular season coming to an end this week, the NFL regular season is hitting its stride in week 12 with a third of the year yet to play. Denver Wideout Demaryius Thomas (WR, GT 2007-09) continued his torrid pace, as he hauled in five catches for 60 yards, including a long of 24 yards (watch below). His five catches on Sunday night versus the Kansas City Chiefs gives him 10 straight games with five catches or more on the season. New Englands' Shaq Mason and Baltimore's Darren Waller (DE, GT 2005-08) (2 catches, 14 yards) both aided in their team's wins this weekend on the offensive side of the ball. No. 16 FSU Escapes Georgia Tech, 3-2. The Jackets finish the regular season 24-8
In their regular season finale, the Georgia Tech volleyball team (24-8, 15-5 ACC) narrowly fell in five sets at No. 16 Florida State (24-5, 17-3) on Friday afternoon at Tully Gym. The Jackets await their post-season fate with the NCAA Selection Show set for Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Georgia Tech finishes the regular season with their best overall (.750) and ACC (.750) winning percentages since 2004 (.794 overall, 1.000 ACC).
The Jackets got off to a slow start in game one and never caught up to Florida State. At 22-17, the Seminoles scored the final three points of the set to take it 25-17.
The second set was all Georgia Tech until Florida State came storming back from a 21-15 deficit to tie the set 21-21. From there, Florida State went on a 4-1 run to win game two, 25-22.
Georgia Tech regrouped and raced out to a 9-0 lead in game three. The Jackets hit .387 with 10 of their 17 kills from the Van Gunst twins on their way to a solid 25-16 victory.
The Jackets had a late lead 23-13 in game four, but the Seminoles never quit and worked b ack within three 23-20. Georgia Tech held on to win 25-23 and force a fifth game.
In game five, it was the Jackets turn to recover from a 7-2 deficit to tie the game 12-12. Tech took the lead 13-12 on a solo block from
Gabriela Stavnetchei, but Florida State scored the final three points of the game to escape 15-13.
"I thought we played pretty well," head coach
Michelle Collier said. "The first two games they [the Seminoles] were able to do a good job against us defensively and once we matched what they were doing defensively we were able to produce more offensively.
"This team has been unbelievably resilient all this season. They are going after it and not giving up. I think that they definitely created a way to play volleyball out there to represent Georgia Tech that should make a lot of people proud.
Teegan Van Gunst Named First Team All-ACC
Senior outside hitter
Teegan Van Gunst was named
to the 2016 All-ACC First Team, the ACC announced Monday. The awards were decided based on a vote of the league's 15 head coaches. The award marks the second consecutive first team selection for Van Gunst.
"Teegan is very deserving," head coach Michelle Collier. "She worked incredibly hard and was willing to learn, to grow and to adjust. I think it's a reflection of how well our team played this season in having our best year in 12 seasons. She grew tremendously this season and I'm excited to see what she accomplishes in the future."
The Fayetteville, Ga., native started all 32 matches and was second in the ACC in kills/set (4.19) and points/set (4.72). Her 507 kills led the Yellow Jackets and rank 10th all-time on Georgia Tech's single-season list. She tallied 19 double-doubles on the season, including 30 matches with 10-plus kills and 20 matches with 10-plus digs. The last time a Yellow Jacket had more than 500 kills in a season was Monique Mead in 2011 (588).
Van Gunst became one of nine Yellow Jackets all-time to eclipse the 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs marks, and ended her career with 1,453 kills - tied for 10th all-time at Georgia Tech - and 1,262 digs. Quick Hits

Georgia Tech Falls To Penn State 67-60
Quinton Stephens led Georgia Tech (4-2) with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Ben Lammers had 12 points and 11 rebounds, but the Yellow Jackets dropped their ACC/Big Ten Challenge game to Penn State, 67-60, Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Josh Reaves sank his first 3-pointer of the season with the Nittany Lions clinging to a two-point lead and 1:40 remaining, dashing any hopes the Yellow Jackets had for a late comeback.
''He picked a huge spot in the game to get his first 3,'' Garner said. ''We're proud of him. My teammates put the ultimate confidence in me and I put the ultimate confidence in my teammates.''
Garner didn't let them down. He scored 17 points and
Mike Watkins added 12 and grabbed 12 rebounds to help secure the win in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. Penn State (5-3) led for 20:57, including most of the second half, and closed out the game on a 10-5 run keyed by Reaves' shot.
It was one of just four 3-pointers that landed for the Nittany Lions, who attempted 15.
''We didn't make shots, but we found a way'' Penn State coach
Patrick Chambers said. ''And that's a sign of a team that's maturing, growing up.''
Stephens led Georgia Tech (4-2) with 13 points and 11 rebounds, his third consecutive game with double digits in each category, while Lammers had 12 points and 11 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the year.
Josh Okogie added 13 points for the Yellow Jackets.
The teams spent more than six minutes tied and swapped the lead seven times in the first half before Penn State took control with a 7-0 run.
Okogie gave Georgia Tech its last lead on the first shot of the second half. His 3-pointer put the Yellow Jackets up 31-30 before Penn State jumped back out front. Okogie pulled his squad into a tie with another 3 to make it 39-39 with 13 minutes remaining.
''We're a team that our margin of error is none, so we have to play nearly perfect,'' Georgia Tech coach
Josh Pastner said. ''We had some breakdowns here and there and Penn State capitalized.''
The Yellow Jackets got off to a nice start with four wins in five tries at home to begin the season but stumbled in their first road game. After two more on the road, Georgia Tech will end the year with few travel distractions as its final five games of 2016 are at home.
Up next, Georgia Tech is at Tennessee on Saturday. The Volunteers are coming back from three games at the Maui Invitational where they lost two of three, closing with a 95-81 win over Chaminade. The game can be heard on The Fan, 680Am and 93.7FM.

Josh Okogie Named ACC Rookie of the Week
Following his record-setting performance in Georgia
Tech's victory over Tulane Saturday night, freshman Josh Okogie was named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, Tech's first such honoree since March 4, 2013.
Okogie, a 6-4 guard from Snellville, Ga., set a Georgia Tech freshman record for points in a game with his 38 in the Yellow Jackets' 82-68 win over the Green Wave. He hit 12 of 20 shots from the floor and 13 of 18 from the free throw line (more than Tulane's entire team, 12-of-17). Okogie scored 28 of his points in the second half.
It was the fourth-most points scored by a freshman in ACC history and the most since the 2013 ACC Tournament, when Boston College's Olivier Hanlan scored 41 (the ACC freshman record) against Georgia Tech. There have been two other 40-point games by freshmen in ACC history - Harrison Barnes of North Carolina in 2011 and Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina in 2006. Okogie eclipsed the previous Tech freshman mark of 33 by Mark Price against Virginia on March 12, 1983 (ACC Tournament) and Dion Glover against Seton Hall on March 11, 1998 (NIT). Earlier in the week, Okogie was one of five Yellow Jackets in double figures with 16 points (5-10 FG, 5-7 FT) in Tech's 81-73 win over Sam Houston State.
For the week, Okogie connected on 17 of 30 shots from the floor, two of five from three-point range and 18 of 25 from the foul line. He also grabbed eight rebounds and chipped in with four assists.

Francesca Pan hit a field goal immediately out of the gate, but Mizzou responded with a 9-2 run to grab a 9-4 lead with less than three minutes expired in the first quarter. Pan snapped the streak with a triple, but Mizzou would extend its lead to eight points ending the quarter on a 5-0 run for a 20-12 quarter lead.
Tech outscored Mizzou 19-11 in the second quarter to erase its deficit as the teams were tied at 31-31 at halftime.
Cha'Ron Sweeney and
