Georgia Tech linebacker David Curry's productivity gets noticed
Georgia Tech redshirt freshman outside linebacker David Curry didn't need much time to make an impression. Curry produced in limited action in the Yellow Jackets' 35-10 win over Mercer Saturday, which will lead to more time on the field as Terrell Lewis' backup.
"We all did some good things and we all made some mistakes, but I thought David Curry improved," defensive coordinator Ted Roof said. "So he'll get more of an opportunity this weekend and hopefully that'll increase the competition level, which'll make both of them play better."
Curry was credited with one tackle. He also pressured Mercer quarterback John Russ on successive plays in the fourth quarter, and then sniffed out a screen pass to help force an incompletion. That led to a field-goal attempt that was blocked.
Saturday's game was the first time the Buford High grad played defense after playing solely on special teams in the season opener against BC.

Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference
Previewing Vanderbilt
Opening Statement:
" I thought Saturday that we made some improvements. We're not where we'd like to be in any facet but there were some positives that came out of the game. Looking forward to playing a Vanderbilt team that's been really physical to this point. Had a big win last week against Middle Tennessee."
You faced a couple of good linebackers against Boston College. Another good one in (Zach) Cunningham coming in.

."He's got good size, bigger than any linebackers we've played so far. Good mobility, speed and experience. He's a good player. They cover him up and make him hard to block"
What's the offensive line pecking order right now.?

"Really, its a three man rotation. Coming off the last game, it would be Shamire (Devine) playing and Parker (Braun) and Will (Bryan) battling. But they'll probably all play."
Qua Searcy made a lot of big plays. What do you see in practice?
"Nothing that sticks out in. He works hard. Some guys, when they lights come, they just kind of up their play a little bit. That's kind of what he's done. He's taken advantage of his opportunities when he's out there. When you do that, the ball has a way of finding you a little more. I'm really pleased with the way he's played, the effort. It looks like he's having fun. He knows what he's doing."
To what degree have the first few games shown what you have?
"The first two games we came out of the gate last year and killed everybody. And everybody was talking about how great we were. And we weren't. Now the first two games this year and people want to talk about how bad we are and we're not. It's kind of somewhere in between. The '14 team started slow and got better. The '15 team, after the Notre Dame game, just couldn't find a way to win. We kept losing one score games. At least this team, in the first game, found a way to win without our "A" game. Last week, if I gave it a grade..."C." Although, offensively, you take away the two fumbles and we probably would have scored 8 touchdowns. Defensively, we gave up 10 points, although we were horrendous on third downs."

Vanderbilt Head Coach Derek Mason's Press Conference Previewing Georgia Tech
Opening Statement:
" Back this week vs Georgia Tech. Coach Paul Johnson has a tough, physical football team who's looking to do exactly what they do, run the football and run it some more. This will be our third offense in three weeks. A great challenge for these guys.
First road game. They're well coached. Coach Johnson has been there awhile. Built a culture of toughness. Our culture is going to clash with one that's already been cemented. We came out of this last game fairly unscathed. We're 0-9-1 against them since 1951. When you're facing a triple option team, they do present problems. They lull you to sleep. Explosive plays, both run and play action. Offensively, we've got to control the tempo of the game.
You mentioned in the spring that your coaches would be looking at Georgia Tech. Is there more work, longer work involved to scheme?

" You're facing a team that does something remotely different than almost every other team you play. The emphasis is on being able to tackle, eye control and communications. You've gone from a call list of 50 plays to 15 or so. So, a lot of extra work.
You faced Army in 2013 when you were at Stanford. Triple option. Does that help in preparation?
" It helps some. You've sort of defensed it before. But you're dealing with a different athlete at quarterback, bigger guys than they had at Army. It makes you do your job. The quarterback is the point guard in this particular offense. He sees it. He deals it. He takes care of the football. Justin Thomas is a good football player. But their guys are bigger. This team's gonna take us into deep water."

ACC Football Power Rankings: Week 2 offers some movement

#1 FSU Seminoles   (2-0, 0-0) LW - Beat Charleston Southern 52-8

#2 Clemson Tigers (2-0, 0-0)
LW - Beat unranked Troy 30-24
Two wins are two wins, especially when one is in a hostile SEC environment like Auburn. But what the heck is up with the Tigers' offense Next: Home vs South Carolina State.for a Saturday noon kickoff.
3. Louisville Cardinals (2-0, 1-0) LW, won at Syracuse 62-28
. Lamar Jackson's legend reached another stratosphere with his performance at Syracuse. But can he do it against a national title contender like FSU? He'll have an even bigger audience as College GameDay comes to town for the first time.  Next: vs FSU, noon Saturday on ABC.
T4. North Carolina (1-1, 0-0)
LW: Won at Illinois 48-23
The Tar Heels showed the kind of offensive effort everyone figured they were capable of, posting 48 points at Illinois behind a strong fourth quarter from Mitch Trubisky. Next: Host James Madison Saturday at 3:30pm.
T4. Pittsburgh (2-0, 0-0) LW: Beat In State Rival Penn State 42-39
James Conner continues to dazzle in his return from cancer, this time leading the Panthers past rival Penn State. The defense looked vulnerable late in nearly blowing a 21-point lead. Such are the quirks of rivalry games.  Next: At Oklahoma State for a Saturday 3:30pm ESPN game.

Men's Basketball ACC Schedule Announced

Beginning on Dec. 31, head coach Josh Pastner's first Yellow Jacket team will host last year's NCAA Championship runner-up, North Carolina, at McCamish Pavilion either at 12 or 2 p.m. on the ACC Network. It is the first New Year's Eve game for Tech since facing Mercer on Dec. 31, 2010 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. It is also the Jackets' first December ACC game since Dec. 20, 2009.
"We're excited about the challenge ahead," said coach Pastner. "The ACC is the premier conference in college basketball - seven teams coming off NCAA Tournament runs last year, and that doesn't count Louisville. Our players and coaches have put in a lot of hard work over the summer, and we're looking forward to getting back on the court to get ready. We've got some very challenging games in our non-conference schedule which will help us get ready for the ACC."
Every Tech ACC game will be televised on either an ESPN network, the ACC Network or the Regional Sports Network. Nine will be televised nationally on an ESPN network.
Season ticket package details for the Yellow Jackets' fifth season in McCamish Pavilion at TogetherWeSwarm.com. Fans can also purchase tickets by calling 1-888-TECH -TIX.
Pastner's welcomes back seven letterwinners, including Sr. forward Quinton Stephens (6-9, Atlanta), Sr. guards Josh Heath (6-2, Tampa, FL), and Corey Heyward (6-1, Duluth, Ga.) and Jr. guard Tadric Jackson (6-2, Tifton, Ga.), who have started 76 games between them, and Jr. center Ben Lammers (6-10, San Antonio, TX). Pastner welcomes a three-man freshman class including guards Justin Moore (6-4, San Diego, CA) and Josh Okogie (6-5, Snellville) and wing forward Christian Matthews (6-6, Fort Washington, MD).

Looking to move to 3-0 for fourth time in the last six seasons, Georgia Tech hosts Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt for a non-conference matchup on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
  * Georgia Tech stands at 2-0 for the seventh time in nine seasons under head coach Paul Johnson thanks to a season-opening ACC win over Boston College (17-14 in Ireland) and last Saturday's home-opening triumph over Mercer (35-10).
  * With a win over Vanderbilt (1-1) on Saturday, the Yellow Jackets would move to 3-0 for the fourth time in the last six seasons (2011, 2013, 2014). Prior to 2011, Tech was 3-0 just four times in 40 seasons since 1971 (1984, 1990, 2001 and 2005).
  * In last Saturday's 35-10 victory over Mercer, Georgia Tech scored its most and allowed its fewest points in 12 games, dating back to last season's 65-10 win over Tulane.
  * On special teams, Georgia Tech has blocked field goals in each of the first two games of this season. The Yellow Jackets' 16 blocked kicks since the beginning of the 2013 season are the most by any NCAA Division I FBS team during that span.
  * Saturday's matchup is the 38th all-time between Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt. However, the Yellow Jackets and Commodores have squared off only three times since 1967 -- 2002, 2003 and 2009.
  * Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 19-15-3 and is unbeaten in 12 meetings with Vanderbilt since World War II (11-0-1).

Scouting Vandy
Vanderbilt comes into Saturday's game with a 1-1 overall record. After falling dropping a 13-10 SEC loss to South Carolina in its season opener on Sept. 1, the Commodores rebounded to thump Middle Tennessee, 47-24, last Saturday.
Running back Ralph Webb and linebacker Oren Burks have been named the Tennessee Sportswriters Association Offensive and Defensive players of the week for their performances against Middle Tennessee this past Saturday. Webb leads the SEC with 308 rushing yards through two games. The junior back ran for 211 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries (7.3 avg.) Saturday.
Through two games, Vandy is rushing for 200 yards and passing for 93 yards per game. Conversely, the Commodores are allowing 293 passing yards and 108.5 rushing yards per game on the young season.

This Saturday's game is Vanderbilt's first road contest of the season. The Commodores were 1-10 in games played away from Vanderbilt Stadium during head coach Derek Mason's first two seasons at the helm (2014-15).
Defensively, junior inside linebacker Zach Cunningham leads Vanderbilt with 22 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss through two games.

MEN OF PRINCIPALS
A.J. Gray and twins, Lance & Lawrence Austin, hope to turn a preseason unknown into a strength

By Georgia Tech
Play by Play Announcer
Andy Demetra

On the surface, Georgia's Tech defensive backfield has little experience playing together.
A.J. Gray and twins Lance and Lawrence Austin know better. Long before they lined
Jr. DB Lance Austin
up in the Yellow Jackets' secondary, the trio served as water boys for the Washington County High School football team in Sandersville, Ga. Their dads, Dr. Allen Gray and Derick Austin, were coaches on the Washington County staff.
"We started in, like, elementary school. Before every Friday night, we used to always get our own games going before the game and play tackle football," A.J. Gray recalled.
Come game time, they handled their responsibilities well.
"They did a good job," said Dr. Gray. "Because if they didn't, we would have run them out of there."
That bond has since reformed on The Flats, where all three figure to have prominent roles this season. Gray and Lance Austin made their first career starts against
Jr. DB
Lawrence Austin
Boston College; Lawrence, older than Lance by a minute, should see plenty of reps as the Jackets' nickel back.
Heading into the Jackets' game against Vanderbilt (12 p.m. ET, Georgia Tech IMG Sports Network), the secondary has already identified one area where it wants to improve.
"Turnovers," said Lance Austin. "It's always good to get turnovers at Bobby Dodd."
If excelling in the secondary takes discipline, then Lance, Lawrence and A.J. had plenty of that growing up, too; their fathers were also their high school principals. Dr. Allen Gray rose from PE teacher to principal at Washington County, where A.J. earned Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year honors. Derick, a former cornerback at Georgia Southern, moved his family
So. DB A.J. Gray
to Barnesville, Ga., where he had taken the principal's job at Lamar County, before his sons' seventh-grade year.
Not surprisingly, their sons didn't have your typical high school experience. "I'm going to tell your Dad," was a crack they heard often.
"All I'm going to say is you walk on a thinnnn line," laughed A.J., who added that it was easy for him and his older sister, Allisha, to stay out of trouble -- after all, their Dad was their ride home.
Lance Austin said the only time he ever "visited the principal's office" at Lamar County was to grab a snack from his Dad.
"I didn't get into much trouble," he said.
  Much?
"Let me correct that. I didn't get into any trouble."
  Derick confirms.
"I didn't have a problem with having to balance being the father and the principal," he said. "Both their mom and I had high standards for then. They liked to try to conform and produce to what their expectations were."
Gray and the Austins both said their fathers were more low-key principals than rigid, fear-mongering taskmasters. And being a principal's son wasn't all that awkward. In fact, they cherished it.
"Staying on top of you, making sure you're doing what you're supposed to do - I had great parents growing up. So did A.J. They made sure they stayed on top of us," said Lance.

  Tech Volleyball Sweeps Georgia Challenge.
Heads To Coastal Carolina Tournament Friday

It was quite a weekend for the Yellow Jackets volleyball team (7-2) as they took out Georgia, Georgia State and Kennesaw State to win the Georgia Challenge.
In the final match Friday night, Tech swept Georgia (8-1) to hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season in front of a packed and enthusiastic crowd at O'Keefe Gymnasium.
Senior Teegan Van Gunst was named the tournament MVP, while freshman Kodie Comby and junior Gabriela Stavnetchei were named to the all-tournament team.  Van Gunst tallied her 1,000th career dig in the match, making her just one of eight Yellow Jackets all time to eclipse 1,000 career digs and kills.
"It was a great atmosphere tonight," head coach Michelle Collier said. "Both teams played really hard and fought for every point. It was really great volleyball all around.  "It means a lot to the seniors to beat Georgia. Teegan has been our backbone and the player we go to in tough situations. She showed up big tonight. She's playing aggressive on both sides of the court and it's rare to see a player's that can do that to the level that she does."
  * Teegan Van Gunst recorded a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs
 * Gabriela Stavnetchei added 10 kills
* Annika Van Gunst and London Ackermann each had 13 digs
* Kodie Comby had eight kills and hit .400 in the match
* GT out-blocked Georgia 11 to five, and out-hit the Bulldogs .227 to .145.
Next Up:  Georgia Tech takes on North Florida on Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. at the Coastal Carolina Tournament, followed by a 7 p.m. match against Coastal Carolina.

Freshman middle blocker Kodie Comby was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday. The honor marks the first ACC weekly honor for the Yellow Jackets this season.
A native of Houston, Texas, was named to the all-tournament team after the Jackets swept the competition at the Georgia Challenge, including handing Georgia its first loss of the season. Against Georgia, Comby tallied eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage with three blocks.
Comby had a season-high 12 kills against Kennesaw State and hit .474 on the weekend with 22 kills and six blocks.
Georgia Tech is back in action when it travels to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Tournament where the Jackets take on North Florida and Coastal Carolina Sept. 16-17.

Out of the Shadows
Freshman Luke Schniederjans Makes A Grand Entrance To The College Golf World

Freshman Luke Schniederjans  turned his first college road trip into a victory celebration Sunday, when the Georgia Tech freshman won the Carpet Capital Collegiate in the first golf tournament of the school year.
Freshman Luke Schniederjans

It took a while for the Yellow Jackets to hit their stride as they fired a 13-under par 275
Sunday at the par-72 Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga., to move from 10th place into a tie with Florida for fifth in the first golf tournament of the school year.  It didn't take Schniederjans long to match and surpass his oldest brother.  Ollie Schniederjans won the Carpet Capital Collegiate in 2013 and 2014 before graduating in 2015 and turning pro. Tech's Jacob Joiner won the tournament last year. Neither won, however, in their first college outing. Strange things were that Joiner, now a junior, didn't qualify for the event this year, and because Luke was Tech's sixth qualifier, he played as an individual, so his three-round total of 11-under par 205 did not factor in the team score.
"Yeah, honestly I wish I played for the team and the team had won," he said calmly after firing a bogey-free round of 70 Sunday. "It wasn't a surprise to me. It was just putting it all together. Putting it all together was cool."
The Jackets put it all together in a big way Sunday, as all six shot rounds of par or better. Sophomore Tyler Joiner shot an eight-under par 64 in just the second competitive tournament of his college career. He tied for 25th in a field of 78.
Junior James Clark (70) tied for 11th at 210, senior Michael Hines (71) was 18th at 213, freshman Andy Ogletree (70) tied for 38th at 219 and junior Chris Petefish (72) tied for 53rd at 223.
Tech's round of 275 was the lowest by any team in the three-day tournament, won by Virginia with a tournament-record score of 833 (31-under par).
Schniederjans won't have to qualify to play for the next tournament September 23-25 in the Maui Jim Invitational, as Heppler rewards all top 10 finishes with an exemption for the next tournament.
He was something of a late bloomer in high school, and didn't take the same path to Tech as Ollie. He's on the scene now, though, and he and the Jackets appear to be re-discovering their true golf DNA.
Not long ago, before Ollie returned to life on the Web.com Tour where he has earned a PGA Tour card for next season, they matched up at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Luke skinned his older brother. Perhaps that was an omen.
"He took him to the cleaners the Sunday after qualifying was over," Heppler said.   "They had a little family outing. Every time he does that, it's all about believing. Ollie came in highly regarded, developed much faster than Luke in high school, and when he showed up he was a real man.
"Luke has grown four or five inches, and I'm taken aback by the amount of progress he's made in the last 12 months. Some people may have thought that he was a charity case for his brother. A lot of it was betting on the fact that he would get bigger, stronger, and a lot of it was betting that he would have the same belief system as his two older brothers. We got lucky."
