Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference Previewing Duke
Opening Statement:
"I thought at the end the score (35-24) was disappointing. But, all in all, I felt like, once the game started, we pretty much had the game in hand.
"The bye week came at a good time. After seven straight games, we're pretty beat up."
On the Duke defense
"They're well coached. The two inside linebackers are really good.
A.J. Wolf has been playing a long time and stands out. They've played very well against option teams the last three years.
"Our last two games against them have been different. Last year, we did not play well up there at all offensively. The year before, here, we got some yards but turned the ball over too many times to win."
On the Tech defense.
"We've got to be better on third downs and try to get off the field. The best way is to not be third and two all the time."
On how the ACC is better with four of the top 11 defenses in the nation.
"Its getting harder and harder. This is the best the league has ever been defensively.
"This is not the ACC of the 1990s. I was looking the other day. Since the expansion, the teams that were originally in the league in the 80s, if you take Clemson out of the mix, there's only been two other times that one of them has been to the Championship Game. And that was the last two years. Discounting us because we've been there three times."
Georgia Southern Head Coach David Cutcliffe's
Press Conference Previewing
"This is a really good Georgia Tech team. They're better than they've been. Playing well at quarterback. They can run it. I'm really impressed with the way they throw the ball when they choose to. They're a good defensive team. Nobody's had a great deal of success. They're extremely well coached. They're very good on special teams.
On the matchup becoming a rivalry.
"This is a great game. Coach Johnson's been there nine years. We're in year nine. They've certainly had the upper hand in it for the most part. You can't make mistakes mentally or physically. They're a team that maximizes a game in their favor if you do.
Georgia Tech goes for it on fourth down a lot. On Duke being the only ACC team that hasn't allowed a fourth down conversion.
"We have a good secondary. We're able to play confidently in the back end. "This team is more difficult to stop because of the array of different things that they can run. We have this history with them. You pack it in to stop the fullback, they're gonna toss the sweep on you.
ESPN's ACC Week 8 Power Rankings: Pitt and Virginia Tech on a collision course
With just four ACC games last week, there wasn't much room to shake up the power rankings, though Virginia Tech and Syracuse certainly made strong statements, and Louisville dominated NC State to continue its push for a playoff berth, even if it's still firmly in the No. 2 spot in the ACC.
.
#1 Clemson Tigers (7-0, 4-0)
NC State's blowout loss certainly didn't make Clemson's struggles against the Wolfpack last week look any better in retrospect, but all should be forgiven if the Tigers can play their best game next week and beat Florida State in Tallahassee, Florida, for the first time since 2006.
2. Louisville Cardinals (6-1, 4-1) LW, Beat NC State 54-13
Lamar Jackson continues to dominate, with four more touchdowns in Saturday's win over NC State. Louisville's close loss at Clemson may keep it out of the playoff, but it sure looks like the Cardinals are one of the four best teams in the country.
3. North Carolina Tar Heels
(6-2, 4-1) LW: Beat Virginia 35-14
When he avoids major storms, Mitch Trubisky is pretty darned good. Setting aside that loss to Virginia Tech, Trubisky is completing 75 percent of his passes with 18 touchdowns and no interceptions.
4. FSU Seminoles (5-2, 2-2)
LW: Bye Week
Dalvin Cook was Florida State's only offense in a loss to Clemson last year. The Seminoles will need more than just Cook to topple the Tigers and move up the power rankings.
5. VA Tech Hokies (5-2, 3-1)
LW: Beat Miami 37-16
This just in: Bud Foster knows how to coach defense. The Hokies were without star pass-rushers Ken Ekanem and Nigel Williams, and still managed to sack Miami's Brad Kaaya eight times in a dominant win. Virginia Tech's chances for winning the Coastal are looking better and better.
#6 Pittsburgh Panthers (5-2, 2-1) LW - Bye Week
Before we crown Virginia Tech, however, there's the little matter of a Thursday night showdown against Pitt this week. The Panthers' two losses came by a combined eight points, and they've had an extra week to prep for the Hokies.

Yellow Jackets Fall to Notre Dame
in ACC Dual Meet. Host UGA Nov. 2
The Georgia Tech swimming and diving teams recorded a number of personal-best times, as well as four more NCAA 'B' qualifying marks on Saturday in its dual meet with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the Tech campus.
"I'm proud of the way that everybody fought, but obviously we want to win. I think we raced hard and I think we raced with our hearts. I think we saw some really good things. We've been working really hard and it was good to be in a fight," said head coach
Courtney Shealy Hart. "That's what college swimming is all about. That's what college dual meets are all about. It was tied going into the last relay today and obviously you want to be in the position to win those."
Highlighted by six second-place finishes, the women's team fell to the Fighting Irish 274-79 to fall to 2-2 overall in dual meet action on the season.
Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 2, as the Yellow Jackets will host UGA at 4 p.m. in the McAuley Aquatic Center.

Having already surpassed its win total from a season ago, Georgia Tech looks to move closer to bowl eligibility and remain in contention for the ACC Coastal Division championship when it hosts division rival Duke on Saturday afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium. * It's homecoming at Georgia Tech and, much more often than not, that means that the Yellow Jackets will come out on top. The Jackets are 51-15-1 all-time in homecoming games, dating back to the Institute's first homecoming in 1949. The Yellow Jackets have won three-straight and 18 of their last 20 homecoming contests.
* Duke is Georgia Tech's most common homecoming opponent, as Saturday marks the 22nd time that the Blue Devils and Yellow Jackets have played on homecoming at Tech. The Jackets are 14-6-1 in homecoming games against the Devils. Georgia Tech has not hosted any other opponent more than seven times for homecoming. * Duke is also Georgia Tech's third-most common opponent overall, as the schools have met 83 previous times on the gridiron (every season since 1933). The Yellow Jackets own a 50-32-1 advantage in the all-time series. Tech has only played Georgia (110 meetings) and Auburn (92 meetings) more than it has squared off against Duke. * Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas needs only 45 passing yards to become the 39th player in NCAA Division I FBS history with 4,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in a career. Thomas, who has 3,955 passing yards and 2,092 rushing yards in 43 career games, is already the first player in Georgia Tech history with 3,500 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in a career.
A Look At The Blue Devils
* Duke is 3-4 overall and 0-3 in ACC play this season.
* Like Georgia Tech, Duke enjoyed a bye last week. The Blue Devils have not played since falling just short of recording one of college football's biggest upsets of the season in a 24-14 loss at No. 7 Louisville on Friday, Oct. 14.
* Defense is the Blue Devils' calling card. Duke ranks among the nation's top 40 in scoring defense (32nd - 219 ppg), total defense (37th - 362.9 ypg), sacks (21st - 3.0 pg), tackles for loss (22nd - 7.4 pg), takeaways (14 - 31st) and red-zone defense (21st - .737).
* Offensively, Duke ranks 124th out of 128 NCAA Division I FBS teams with 18 turnovers.
* The Blue Devils are led offensively by redshirt-freshman quarterback
Daniel Jones (146-for-233, 1,584 yards, nine touchdowns, eight interceptions). The 6-5, 210-pound Jones has also rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns.
* Defensively, linebackers
Joe Giles-Harris and
Ben Humphreys lead Duke with 55 tackles apiece. The duo has combined for 12.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions and six quarterback hurries.

~ Scouting The Blue Devils ~
Duke redshirt senior defensive tackle A.J. Wolf has been named one of 19 quarterfinalists for the 13th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, according to an announcement by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation.
All 19 student-athletes represent the best college defensive players in the nation who make the biggest IMPACT on their team both on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
Wolf becomes Duke's third consecutive Lott IMPACT Trophy quarterfinalist, joining linebacker
David Helton (2014) and safety
Jeremy Cash (2015).
On the field this season, Wolf leads Duke linemen with 25 tackles, 5.0 sacks and five quarterback pressures. Wolf's 5.0 sacks are tied for the 44th most nationally and are the sixth most in the ACC.
The DT is helping Duke's pass defense rank 24th nationally with 21.0 sacks and 19th in sacks per game (3.00). The Blue Devils stand 27th in the country with 52 tackles for lost yardage and 26th in TFL yards (212 yards).
* For the third consecutive game, Duke faces an opponent averaging 230+ rushing yards per game.
* Duke WR
T.J. Rahming is coming off a 7-catch, 83-yard outing at Louisville and leads Duke with 40 receptions on the season ... Rahming is just the third player in Duke history to register 40+ catches in each of his first two seasons as a Blue Devil. Rahming also sits just 40 yards shy of becoming the 36th player in Blue Devil history to post 1,000 receiving yards in a career
* LBs Joe Giles-Harris & Ben Humphreys lead the Blue Devils in tackles with 55 each ... The roommates rank tied for 12th in the ACC in tackles per game (7.86)
* Duke RB Shaun Wilson is the only active player nationally with TDs of 80+ yards via rush, reception & return.
* Duke CB Breon Borders leads the ACC in passes defended per game at 1.57 ... On the year, Borders has nine PBUs & two INTs.
*
Career rushing yards for RB
Jela Duncan has 1,973 career rushing yards ready to become the sixth player in Duke history to top the 2,000-yard plateau

Volleyball host Clemson Wednesday, Virginia Friday after seventh-straight historic win at Duke
For the first time in 12 years, the Georgia Tech volleyball team (17-5, 8-2 ACC) defeated Duke (14-6, 8-2) in Durham on Sunday afternoon. The Jackets' 3-1 win was the first one in Durham since Oct. 9, 2004.
The Jackets improved their winning streak to seven matches, while simultaneously snapping Duke's six-match winning streak.
How It Happened: The first set started as a back and forth battle. Duke gained some momentum to take a two-point lead, 10-8, but the Jackets worked back to tie it 10-10 and then went on a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Jackets had set-point at 24-19 and withstood a late Duke rally to win game one, 25-22.
In set two, Duke jumped out to a 4-0 lead and stayed in rhythm throughout the set to win 25-15. In set three, the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead in the middle of the game, 16-12. Tech maintained a high tempo and won the game, 25-20, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Jackets were down 20-16 in game four and used a 4-0 run sparked by a solo block from
Gabi Stavnetchei to tie it 20-20. The two teams traded set point in a nail biter game. At 24-24, a Duke setting error gave Tech match point and the Jackets put it away on a kill by
Teegan Van Gunst.
Quote: "Duke is so good defensively that we needed everyone to be efficient. We are playing really consistent and we were making plays," head coach
Michelle Collier said. "It was a great team effort. Duke's a tough team to beat. So it was a great win and I'm very proud. It was a great win for our program."
Quick Hits
- The Yellow Jackets used a balanced attack and solid defense as four players recorded double-doubles in the win.
- The last time Tech won back-to-back matches against Duke was in 2004.
- Gabriela Stavnetchei tallied 15 kills and 11 digs on .387 hitting for her fifth double-double this season.
- Teegan Van Gunst led all players with 18 kills to go along with 10 digs for her 13th double-double.
- The Jackets out-blocked Duke 12 to 8.
- Tech has been in the top 50 in the NCAA's RPI Report for the past four weeks and is at No. 43 this week.
- The Jackets need one more win to match last season's win total with 10 matches left in the season.
Up Next: The Yellow Jackets take on Clemson on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for their annual Jackets for a Cure pink match presented by UnitedHealthcare. First serve is at 7 p.m. at O'Keefe on the ACC Network Extra. The Jackets will auction off their game worn pink jerseys from Oct. 26 at noon to Nov. 2 at noon. Bidding begins at $50 and increases by $10.
Clemson (6-16, 1-9 ACC) is coming off a 3-2 ACC loss Sunday at Wake Forest (9-12, 5-5 ACC).

The 16th annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive will take place on Friday, Nov. 18, when the Yellow Jackets take on Ohio University at 8 p.m. Fans are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy or a monetary gift to the game. Michael Isenhour, who died in 2002 following a battle with leukemia. Isenhour spearheaded the first Toy Drive in 2001 to help families affected by 9/11, and since then, SAAB has continued the annual project in his memory.
On Dec. 18, when Tech hosts Alcorn State for a 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon game, the Yellow Jackets will hold a coat drive. Junkanoo Jam Relocated To Bimini Bahamas
The upcoming Junkanoo Jam women's basketball tournament, normally held on Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas, has been relocated to the Bimini Islands of the Bahamas due to damage caused by Hurricane Matthew, Oct. 5-6.
The tournament will continue as scheduled Nov. 24-26.
Tournament staff made the decision to move the tournament following damage to The Grand Lucayan Resort caused by the storm. After an on-site inspection and communications with local staff, it was determined that the resort, where teams and supporters stay, would not be repaired in time to accommodate fans and teams.
"Obviously we are disappointed that the tournament had to be moved from Grand Bahama Island, but we are grateful to our friends in the Bahamas, who have been extremely helpful in relocating the tournament," Neal Holden, tournament director and BTI president, said.
"Our first priority is always to the safety and well-being of our teams, fans, and stakeholders," Holden said. "We are keeping the Bahamian people in our prayers as they recover from this natural disaster and hope we can still provide travelers with an unforgettable experience, while showing off the beauty of the Bahamas."

Jackets finish 12th at Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate
Vincent Whaley shot a final-round 69 (-3) Sunday to earn a top-20 finish playing as an individual, but Georgia Tech struggled to a 6-over-par 294 Sunday finishing in 12th place at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Under ideal scoring conditions Sunday with afternoon temperatures in the low 70s, clear skies and a light breeze, only Whaley (senior, McKinney, Texas) was able to break par on the Yellow Jackets'

home course. Playing as an individual, he finished in a tie for 19th at even-par 216, the best among the 10 Tech players who competed.
Tech's 294 score was composed by trio or 73s from juniors
James Clark (Columbus, Ga.) and
Michael Pisciotta (Alpharetta, Ga.) and freshman
Tyler Strafaci (Davie, Fla.) and a pair of 75s from freshman
Luke Schniederjans (Powder Springs, Ga.) and junior
Chris Petefish (Danville, Calif.). Among those five, Clark earned the highest finish with a tie for 29th at 218 (+2).
The Yellow Jackets finished at 13-over-par 877.
"We just were not very good. You can look pretty bad when you play great competition. We will continue to work and get better. We certainly know where the bar is to compete nationally," said coach
Bruce Heppler.
Georgia Tech has won the USCC twice in its 10-year history, in 2010 and 2012. Clemson is the only other multiple winner, having captured the inaugural title in 2006 and again in 2009.
James White, who set tournament records for 18-hole score (62) and 54-hole score (204, broken in 2014), won medalist honors in 2010, while
Ollie Schniederjans won it in 2013 for Tech's only individual titles. The Yellow Jackets finished fifth last fall.
Next up, the Tech golf team heads to Pebble Beach, Calif for the Cypress Point Classic. The tournament, held at the Cypress Point Golf Club, takes place next Monday and Tuesday, October 31st and November 1st.
