On a day when the Georgia Tech and Duke offenses rolled up a combined 1,164 yards and 73 points and Tech quarterback
Justin Thomas flirted with
George Godsey's single-game school record for total offense (he finished with 459 yards, 18 short), it's easy to joke how the theme of Saturday's 38-35 Yellow Jackets victory was "The Defense Rests."
But the unwillingness of Georgia Tech sophomore free safety
A.J. Gray to rest on a second-quarter play resulted in arguably the biggest play -- and certainly the biggest defensive play -- of the game.
"It was a great effort play by A.J. He saved a score," said head coach
Paul Johnson. "It was a great effort play. You'd like to see the guy not run down the middle of the field untouched but it was a great effort play by A.J. Gray."
With Georgia Tech leading 21-7 and Duke facing second-and-eight at its own 40, Blue Devils running back
Shaun Wilson took a handoff, and burst through hole up the middle. With no Tech tacklers in sight, he motored toward the south end zone. He slipped a desperation diving tackle attempt by strong safety
Corey Griffin at the Tech 31. He then sought the best way to avoid corner
Step Durham, the last Jackets' defender, who was engaged with Duke receiver
Chris Taylor.
Actually, Durham was the last Jackets' defender Wilson could see. What he could not see was Gray in full sprint, catching up. When Duke's junior running back, who slowed slightly to navigate, re-accelerated and headed toward the left corner of the end zone, Gray closed in and blindsided the 5-9, 180-pounder. He grabbed Wilson's left arm with his left hand and separated him from the ball at the 10. The ball rolled toward the sideline and Durham picked it up at the two.

Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference Previewing N. Carolina
Opening Statement:
"I thought we played pretty well against Duke in the first half. We hit some key plays offensively and were able to keep them out of the end zone, even though we gave up a ton of yards. Fortunately, we made enough plays to come out and win the game. Now, we get ready to go on the road and play a top 20 team in North Carolina team that's explosive and very talented."
What made you so successful last week that can carry over to this week?
"We've been playing pretty good offensively for the last three weeks. We're averaging about 6.5 yards a play, which is pretty good."
You're facing one of the top quarterbacks in the country. This will be maybe the toughest test for your secondary this year?
"Clearly, he's very accurate (
Mitch Trubisky). He knows what he wants to do on offense. He's very talented and understands what they want to do.'
What is the most important component to making the offense work?
"For us to be successful, we need to be able to run the ball. That's who we are. I'm talking about 280 a game all the way up to 400.
"In 2014, when we got that thing humming, we were rushing for about 340 a game. That opens up the passing game, just like the passes to
Clinton (Lynch) in the last two home games for touchdowns.
"It kind of feeds off itself. Its a system and when you're operating correctly and blocking, you have some answers for what people do. Physical superiority cancels all theories. So, if they're just whipping your butt up front, it makes it all look rough."
North Carolina Head Coach Larry Fedora's
Press Conference Previewing
"
Coming out of our open week, we had a good week of practices and preparation getting a lot of young guys some reps. We were able to get some guys rested as we get into this stretch during November."
On getting ready for Georgia Tech and the triple option?
"We got a few extra days on it. It's like reintroducing it to them every year. We try to do things throughout the year to keep it fresh for them. Its something that's totally different. Its one of the advantages that they have. Your kids never see it except for that one week.
"W
e probably got two practices that we wouldn't have." (without the bye).
On last year's 38-31 win.
"Coming back from 21 down in the first quarter. Getting it back to a ball game right before half. That said a lot about that team last year and how much grit they had. That pretty much propelled us for the rest of the season."
On Justin Thomas executing that offense.
"They guy is so explosive. He just proved last week that he can beat you with his arm or his legs. He's electric. I think I saw one. They're third and 17, he's backed up near the end zone, he outflanks them, takes off and goes 50."
On what he did with his day off on Saturday
"I watched football. I got up, worked out, turned on Game Day and finished the last Florida State-Clemson game. I watched every single thing I could watch."
On watching ACC or others
"I watched everything. I keep a pad next to me and, by the end of the day, I've got all kinds of things written down. Ideas that come up. Things that I think I can steal and implement. Things that came up and you want to talk to your team about so you don't make the same mistake someone else made."
ESPN's ACC Week 9 Power Rankings:
Clemson, Louisville (barely) hold firm
at top
Good luck trying to play the head-to-head game -- or even the common-opponent game -- when it comes to slotting some ACC teams. Clemson and Louisville remain the class of the conference after close road wins, but it's chaos after that.
.
#1 Clemson Tigers (8-0, 5-0)
The Tigers cleared seemingly their final regular-season hurdle, remaining undefeated with a 4th-quarter comeback in a 37-34 win at FSU. With their perfect season still intact, it's worth acknowledging their impressive wins this season: at Auburn, Louisville and FSU..
2. Louisville Cardinals (7-1, 5-1) LW, Beat Virginia 32-25
That was a little close for comfort, no? Lamar Jackson saved the day in a 32-25 win despite UVa's best efforts to ruin his Heisman plans -- and his team's long-shot playoff plans. But chaos continues to take place across the nation, and few one-loss teams would benefit from chaos better than Louisville.
3. FSU Seminoles
(5-3, 2-3) LW: Lost to Clemson 37-34
Dalvin Cook may be playing his way to New York for the Heisman ceremony, although another close home loss puts the Seminoles in the unfamiliar position of being a three-loss team with plenty of the season still to be played.
4. Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2, 4-1)
LW: Beat Pittsburgh 39-36
The Hokies control their destiny in the Coastal after escaping Pitt victorious 39-36 on Thursday night, and they have a very manageable ACC slate remaining: at Duke, Georgia Tech and Virginia. Of course, these guys lost at Syracuse, so expect the unexpected with all things related to the Coastal division.
5. N. Carolina Tar Heels (6-2, 4-1)
LW: Bye Week
The Tar Heels were idle and, like the Hokies, have what should be a manageable season-ending ACC slate ahead of them in Georgia Tech, at Duke and NC State. That home loss to the Hokies is a killer, though, when looking at division-title implications.
#6 Pitt Panthers (5-3, 2-2) LW: Lost to Virginia Tech 39-36
The Panthers have been right there in all of their losses, but that's of little consolation after a home loss to Virginia Tech. Now they travel to face a hungry Miami team that has lost four straight.
#7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-3, 2-3) LW : Beat Duke 38-35
Georgia Tech. Nothing has jumped off the page with the Yellow Jackets this season, but they are quietly putting together a decent campaign, getting a win within bowl eligibility after beating Duke 38-35 at home. Three of their final four are on the road, though.

"This will a true test for team across the board and in every event," stated head coach

Ranked No. 19 nationally in the CSCAA Coaches TYR Top-25 poll, the Yellow Jackets' men's team is 2-1 overall in dual meet action on the season with wins over Pittsburgh and Boston College. Last time out on Oct. 21-22, the Jackets pushed Notre Dame to the very final race, the 400 free relay, before falling to the Irish in ACC competition.
Sophomore
Rodrigo Quadros Correia, who was tabbed the ACC Male Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming.com following the Notre Dame dual, registered four individual wins versus the Irish. He has the second best time in the ACC in the 200 IM with an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 1:48.05, a top-three time in the 200 free with an NCAA 'B' qualifying time of 1:37.53, fifth in the 100 free at 44.51 and the seventh-best time in the ACC in the 100 back at 48.97.

* Riding the momentum of back-to-back victories, Georgia Tech football begins a grueling November with a contest at No. 18/17 North Carolina. * Saturday's game at North Carolina begins a stretch of three road dates in Georgia Tech's final four regular-season games. * Georgia Tech hits the road following consecutive home wins over Georgia Southern (35-24 on Oct. 15) and Duke (38-35 on Oct. 29). * At 5-3 overall, the Yellow Jackets need just one win in their final four regular season games to become bowl-eligible for the 19th time in the last 20 seasons. * At 2-3 in ACC play, Tech also remains in contention for the Coastal Division title and a berth in the 2016 ACC Championship Game, especially with opportunities against Coastal front-runners North Carolina (6-2, 4-1 ACC) and Virginia Tech (6-2, 4-1 ACC) looming in the next two weeks. * Georgia Tech amassed 605 yards of total offense in last Saturday's win over Duke, which was the Jackets' highest offensive output in 26 games, dating back to a 612- yard effort in a 56-28 win at Pitt on Oct. 25, 2014. * The Yellow Jackets' 605-yard output was highlighted by quarterback Justin Thomas racking up a career-high 459 yards of total offense (264 passing, 195 rushing) and accounting for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing). After posting the third-highest single-game yardage total in program history, Thomas was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week and ACC Offensive Back of the Week.

* North Carolina's only other loss was a 33-24 loss to Georgia on Sept. 3 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
* Carolina heads into the stretch run of 2016 with three home games over the final four weeks of the regular season. In addition to Saturday's game against Georgia Tech, the Tar Heels play host to The Citadel on Nov. 19 and NC State on Nov. 25. Carolina's only remaining road game is Thursday, Nov. 10 at Duke. Thomas Named Walter Camp National Player
of the Week
In recognition of his incredible performance in Georgia Tech's come-from-behind victory over Duke on Saturday, quarterback Justin Thomas has been named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Sunday.
Thomas amassed 459 yards of total offense - the third-highest total in Georgia Tech history - and accounted for four touchdowns in the Yellow Jackets' 38-35 win. He completed 10-of-14 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns and ran 17 times for 195 yards and two scores, good for a 99.7 ESPN Total Quarterback Rating, which is the highest Total QBR for an FBS player this season.
The fifth-year senior became the first Yellow Jacket with 400 yards of total offense in a single game since
George Godsey totaled a school-record 477 yards against Virginia in 2001. In addition to posting the third-highest yardage total ever at Georgia Tech, Thomas' 276.97 pass-efficiency rating was also the third-highest mark in program history.
Thomas Is only the fourth FBS player since 2000 with 190 rushing yards, 250 passing yards, two touchdown runs and two touchdown passes in a game and he single-handedly outgained 66 of the 106 FBS teams that played on Saturday.
In addition to piling up the gaudy numbers, he led Georgia Tech to scores on six of its 10 offensive possessions (not including a final drive when the Jackets ran out the clock to seal the victory). He engineered a six-play, 86-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that culminated with him throwing the game-winning 21-yard touchdown pass to Clinton Lynch with 5:38 to go in the ballgame.
In the process, he also became only the 39th player in FBS history with 4,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards in a career.
Justin Thomas Named ACC Offensive Back Of The Week
After being named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday, Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas added to his growing list of accolades on Monday when he was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week.
The conference recognition is the second of Thomas' career. He was also named ACC Offensive Back of the Week following his performance in a 27-24 win at Virginia Tech on Sept. 20, 2014.

Jalen Johnson faces charge of simple battery
Georgia Tech defensive back Jalen Johnson was arrested on campus Sunday on a charge of simple battery.
The sophomore was released from the Fulton County jail later Sunday on a $5,000 bond.
"I think I would urge everybody to let all the facts come in and let the investigation unfold and then we'll make an appropriate statement and an appropriate action," Georgia Tech coach
Paul Johnson said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "But guys are innocent until proven guilty. Just because it happened doesn't mean they're always guilty, so let's let the facts play out."
Johnson said that he didn't take immediate action because "I'm not sure this is going to be an issue when it all plays out," according to the newspaper.
This school also issued an official statement.
"Jalen Johnson is a member of the Georgia Tech football team," the school said. "The Georgia Institute of Technology does not discuss ongoing investigations."
Johnson has played in all eight of the Yellow Jackets' games this season, mostly on special teams, and has been credited with five tackles.

Volleyball Triumphs Over Cavaliers; Wins Ninth Straight; Host A Pair of ACC Matches
This Weekend With Virginia Tech and Pitt
Georgia Tech volleyball (19-5, 10-2 ACC) swept Virginia (4-19, 1-10 ACC) for the second time this season on Friday night at O'Keefe Gym to extend the Yellow Jackets' win streak to nine matches, the most in a season since 2006.
With the win, the Jackets have eclipsed their win totals overall and in the ACC from a season ago. It marks the 11th sweep of the season and the most sweeps in a season since 15 in 2012.
How It Happened -
The Jackets were slow out of the gate as the Cavaliers raced to a 9-5 lead. The tides began to turn as Georgia Tech went on a 5-1 run behind two kills from Teegan Van Gunst and the blocking efforts of Lauren Pitz and Rebecca Martin to knot the game at 10-10. From there, the Jackets kept a high tempo to win 25-19.
Georgia Tech didn't let up in game two. The Jackets started with a block by Sydney Wilson and Annika Van Gunst to go along with two aces by Annika Van Gunst on their way to a 5-1 lead. Tech kept its foot on the gas pedal and accelerated to a 22-16 advantage. After withstanding a 4-1 run from the Cavaliers, the Jackets were able to put the set away 25-20.
The Cavaliers found their rhythm in the third set and the Jackets worked to overcome a 14-10 deficit to tie the game, 15-15. Virginia pulled ahead 20-17, before a 3-0 comeback from Georgia Tech tied it again, 21-21. The Jackets scored the final four points to capture the game 25-21 and claim the sweep.
"It was good. We kept working hard, this team is really confident right now," head coach
Michelle Collier
said. "We know we've got a long way to get better and we're staying driven and focused on what we need to do so it's exciting to see that and have them live this moment. It's special for them.
"Our goal has been to get better every year. We've still got eight more matches to go and making sure that we finish as strong as we can."
The Yellow Jackets are auctioning off their game-worn and team autographed pink jerseys with net proceeds benefiting the Susan G. Komen Fund. The auction ends Nov. 2 at 12 p.m. with bidding starting at $50 and increasing by $10 increments. To bid visit,

Josh Okogie grew up surrounded by soccer yet looks like a football player, Christian Matthews says he derived "physicality" from playing football, and Justin Moore played football until getting thumped.
Georgia Tech's three freshmen are now full-time hoopsters, and head coach
Josh Pastner says they have plenty of basketball nuance to learn.
It's not like they're new to the sport, and all of them may contribute this season, but they're still in the research and development stage and inclined in their own ways to approach the game brutishly.
When the Yellow Jackets tip off for real Nov. 11 against
 |
|
 |
Freshman Guard Josh Okogie |
Tennessee Tech McCamish Pavilion, Pastner will look for more touch from this trio. It seems at times in practice that they're trying to do too much.
"Yes, and that's why I go back to keeping it simple," Pastner said. "They hurt themselves when they try to hit the home run, hit the triple. They've just got to hit singles."
In talking to Tech's newbies, their confidence is evident. Ask them to preview their game styles for fans, and they don't sound like freshmen. It's interesting how they see themselves vs. how Pastner sees them.
Let's go point-counter point.
With a shot that can be silky, Matthews sounds ready to snipe.
He committed to Tech after being recruited by former coach
Brian Gregory, and stuck with his pledge after Pastner was hired partly because his high school teammate at National Christian Academy in Ft. Washington, Md.,
Sylvester Ogbonda, is a redshirt freshman.
The 6-foot-7 guard appears to believe he's a better fit now than before, especially since he's muscled up to 210 pounds from 190.
"My style of play is fast, up-tempo, and I like to score from all areas of the court: the paint, mid-range and 3," Matthews said. "It's a big part because it also opens up drives. If [defenders] don't close out, I can put it up."
Pastner might say hmmmmm.
"When he's open, he's got to make shots," the coach said. "He's got to have good shot selection. I think that's very important. He as well has to be a really good offensive rebounder. For him to find time on the floor for us this year, he's got to be a great rebounder."

Brooking, Harpring Selected For Induction
To Georgia Sports Hall of Fame
 |
|
 |
Matt Harpring, Georgia Tech (1994-98) |
Former Georgia Tech stars Keith Brooking (football) and Matt Harpring (men's basketball) are among eight athletes and coaches that were selected for induction to the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday, October 26.
Brooking played linebacker at Georgia Tech from 1994-97 and remains the leading tackler in program history with 467 career stops. The Sharpsburg, Ga. native also owns the sixth- and seventh-highest single-season tackle totals in Tech history with 147 as a junior in 1996 and 146 as a sophomore in 1995. He led the Yellow Jackets in tackles in each of his final three seasons and made 34-consecutive starts to close out his collegiate career.
Brooking was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the 12th overall pick in the 1998 National Football League Draft and became a fixture on the Falcons' defense for 11 seasons. He helped lead the Falcons to the only Super Bowl appearance in franchise history as a rookie in 1998, appeared in five Pro Bowls and was named one of the 20 best players in team history by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He capped his 15-year professional career with the Dallas Cowboys (2009-11) and Denver Broncos (2012) and finished with 1,434 tackles in 225 NFL games.
Harpring, an Atlanta native, was named Georgia's Mr. Basketball as a high-school senior at Marist School in 1994. At Georgia Tech, he was a four-year starter (1994-98) and a three-time all-conference selection, joining Mark Price as the only Yellow Jackets to earn first-team all-ACC accolades three times. He finished his collegiate career as the second-leading scorer (2,225 points) and rebounder (997) in program history (he still remains Tech's No. 2 all-time scorer and ranks No. 3 in rebounds). He was a third-team Associated Press All-American and an academic All-American as a senior in 1998.
"When he's open, he's got to make shots," the coach said. "He's got to have good shot selection. I think that's very important. He as well has to be a really good offensive rebounder. For him to find time on the floor for us this year, he's got to be a great rebounder."

Junior
James Clark (Columbus, Ga.) earned the only win for the Yellow Jackets, defeating
Justin Suh, 3-1, in the leadoff match. Sophomore
Tyler Joiner (Leesburg, Ga.), junior
Chris Petefish (Danville, Calif.) and freshman
Luke Schniederjans (Powder Springs, Ga.) each earned a half-point by halving the back nine in their matches.
UCLA defeated No. 6 Stanford, 16-8, in the third-place match, while No. 10 Wake Forest overcame California, 14-10, to capture fifth place. Alabama got past No. 14 Georgia, 13 ½ - 10 ½, completing a winless tournament for the Bulldogs.
Coach Bruce Heppler SAYS - "We ran into a really good team who played extremely well today. They have veteran guys who have been in the mix the past two NCAA Championships. But this has been a great experience to end the fall, and I think we got better as a team this week.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION - The Cypress Point Classic is a bracketed match play event hosted by Stanford, featuring Alabama, California, Georgia, Southern California, UCLA and Wake Forest, six of whom are ranked among the top 30 teams in the nation by Golfstat. The eight teams were pre-seeded No. 1 through No. 8 in order by average ranking between Golfstat and Golfweek rankings seven days prior to event. No. 1 seed plays No. 8 seed, etc., in the first round of bracketed play. Winners go forward in bracket, losers move to consolation bracket. Each team was guaranteed three matches under each format outlined.
Round one was contested with fourball, or best ball, matches. Teams competed in foursomes, or alternate shot, matches in round two. Round three featured singles matches.
Four total points are available per match. One point each is awarded for front-nine match, back-nine match, and two points for the overall match. Each match is played over 18 holes under the format set for that round. The total number of "holes won" by each side over the full 18-holes settled ties. Teams with highest point total at the end of each round advanced in the bracket.
TEAM UPDATE - Georgia Tech is ranked No. 29 in this week's Golfstat rankings and No. 30 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Index. Tech's travel team for the Cypress Point Classic was created using a qualification system based on points accumulated through players finishes in the Yellow Jackets' first three events this fall and team qualifying rounds.
That concludes the Georgia Tech men's golf fall slate. They'll prepare for the Spring 2017 schedule that begins February 2-4 at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
