Miami Hurricanes at Georgia Tech, October 1 game set for
noon kickoff
Mark Richt's return to Atlanta will be a nationally televised game that kicks off at noon.
The Hurricanes, who are off this week, will visit Georgia Tech on Oct. 1. The game will be shown on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
It will be the second national-TV game in a row for Miami (3-0), which climbed 10 spots to No. 15 in the Associated Press poll with a 45-10 win at Appalachian State last Saturday. That game was shown on ESPN.
Richt is beloved in the Peach State, though probably not by most Georgia Tech fans.
In 15 years as Georgia's coach, Richt was 13-2 against the rival Yellow Jackets. The two teams face each other annually at the end of the regular season. Richt's last game as UGA's coach was a 13-7 win in Atlanta last Nov. 28. His teams were 8-0 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Miami, which returns one defensive starter from last year (end Chad Thomas) and has three freshmen linebackers in its lineup, has two weeks to prepare for coach Paul Johnson's run-heavy, option-based offense. Richt called it "very tough to defend."
Though players will get a good look Thursday, when Georgia Tech (3-0) hosts No. 5 Clemson (7:30 p.m., ESPN), Richt said players will need "a series or two or three" in the game to fully understand the tempo and blocking.
"If we were playing them [this] Thursday night, I'm sure it would be really tough," he said. "Scout teams can't do it justice."
The Hurricanes have won six of their last seven games against Georgia Tech, but was soundly defeated in its last trip to Atlanta, on Oct. 5, 2014. After beating Miami 28-17 - a win that saw about 1,000 fans rush the field in celebration - the Yellow Jackets finished 10-4 and won the Orange Bowl.
The Hurricanes went 6-7, setting the table for Al Golden's Oct. 2015 dismissal and clearing room for Richt after he was fired at Georgia.

Head Coach Paul Johnson's Press Conference
Previewing Clemson
Opening Statement:
" I thought we got better Saturday, and each game we've improved in different areas, but there's still work left to be done. The way we finished, especially our offensive performance in the fourth quarter wasn't as clean and crisp as it could've been. The way the games have gone, we haven't run as many plays and possessions, but it's worked out okay; the bottom line is the point total. Having said that, we're happy to be 3-0, and we've got the biggest challenge we've faced so far this year on a Thursday night on a short week. It's going to be a quick turnaround against a very, very talented team."
On the similarity between this and last year's Clemson team

."It's a lot of the same guys, but they've got some new offensive linemen. Defensively, they've had to replace some guys, but they're still big and physical. The stat that sticks out to me is that, defensively, they're giving up 18-percent third down conversions. They haven't been as prolific as they were last year on offense, but they started to play better Saturday. They dropped some balls and were their own worst enemy, but I'm sure we'll get their best on Thursday. They're still very talented, and [Mike Williams] is as good as a player I've seen in a long time; he's a top-notch receiver."
On the difficulty of planning for Deshaun Watson

"It's difficult planning for their team. He's a great individual player, but they've got a lot of other great individual players. If you look, their skill levels are very high. All their receivers are good, their RBs are good, they have big physical offensive linemen. And Watson is the guy that makes it all go, and he's very talented as well. So they've got plenty of talent."
On whether the atmosphere of Thursday night games helps performance
"We've always had a really good atmosphere for night games, but I think Thursday night games, in particular, have been really good. Hopefully we'll have a big crowd on Thursday night, and it'll be fun for the guys to go out and play."

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney's Press Conference Previewing Georgia Tech
Kind of the flexbone offense that Georgia Tech will attack you with. How much does Auburn actually help you?
They threw everything at you.
" Not much triple option like Georgia Tech does. But Tech...that's what they do. And nobody does it better than Paul Johnson. He knows that offense inside and out and he's got answers. You've gotta play very disciplined and not turn the ball over to have a chance to beat those guys."
Coming off Saturday, you didn't have to play your front line guys. You played a lot of bodies. But they got some rest.
" We're fortunate that we were able to play a lot of guys and, hopefully, that will pay off for us. I'm sure they were able to play a lot of guys as well."
One of the great things your staff does is to get in a lot of planning ahead of time. So, you've already gotten in a little Georgia Tech work in August.
" We actually work a little bit of Georgia Tech year round just because they're so different. We're not starting from ground zero. But, still a very daunting task to get ready for."
And you have some momentum after the last game.
"We needed to play better. To try to get that taste out of our mouth. We hadn't executed very well consistently. And it started with the last three drives of the Troy game. Touchdown, touchdown, field goal. And we picked right up where we left off in Saturday's game."

ESPN's ACC Football Power Rankings: Week 3. Louisville Vaults
To The Top

In case you missed it: Louisville is really, really good. The #10 Cardinals' 43-point win over #2 Florida State Saturday eliminated any doubt about that, so Louisville is the new #1 in our ACC Power Rankings. As for the rest of the ACC ...

1. Louisville Cardinals (3-0, 2-0) LW, beat FSU 63-20
.  Lamar Jackson is the real deal, as Florida State found out early and often. Fortunately for fans of college football, the nation will get to see Jackson duel with Deshaun Watson and Greg Ward later this season.
Next: vs FSU, noon Saturday on ABC.

#2 Clemson Tigers (3-0, 0-0)
LW - Beat S. Carolina State 59-0
Speaking of Watson, his Tigers finally looked the part in a 59-0 win over South Carolina State. That offensive rhythm will be important as they get ready for consecutive games at Georgia Tech and against Louisville.

#3 Miami Hurricanes
   (3-0, 0-0) LW - Beat Appalachian St. 45-10
If it weren't for Jackson's theatrics, the Hurricanes might have been the talk of the ACC this weekend after making quick work of a hungry Appalachian State team in a hostile environment. The Hurricanes get a bye this week before beginning a brutal six-game stretch that starts with a trip to Georgia Tech and ends with a game against Pitt.

T4. North Carolina (2-1, 0-0)
LW: Beat James Madison 56-28
Mitch Trubisky looked really, really sharp once again, overcoming a wild first quarter and running away from James Madison 56-28. Fellow Coastal contender Pitt awaits next week.

T4. Florida State (2-1, 0-1)
LW: Lost 63-20 to Louisville
If you're FSU, you look at the standings and remind yourself that Saturday's blowout still only counts for one in the loss column. With the way next week's opponent, South Florida, has been scoring lately, the Seminoles don't have time to feel sorry for themselves.

6. Georgia Tech (3-0, 1-0)
LW: Beat Vanderbilt 38-7
The Yellow Jackets were dominant in their 38-7 win over Vanderbilt, doing what they do offensively but also locking the Commodores up defensively. Thursday's tilt with Clemson could get interesting.
A big challenge this Thursday night as Clemson comes to town.

The Fearless Foursome: Georgia Tech women's tennis features
four freshmen

The prospect of having to replace three seniors would be enough to give any coach sleepless nights. As would heading into the first match of the fall with a team that's 50 percent freshmen.
But it's all's good to Rodney Harmon, who's doing just that as he began his fourth season at the helm of Georgia Tech's Women's Tennis Team last weekend when the Jackets participated in the inaugural Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational at historic Bill Talbert Stadium, in Newport, Rhode Island.
Seniors Rasheeda McAdoo and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and freshmen Kenya Jones, Nadia Gizdova and Nami Otsuka all went 2-1 on the weekend following Sunday's round of play. McAdoo dropped her first match of the weekend on Sunday, falling to Oklahoma State's Vladica Babic in a three-set thriller, while Jones also fell Sunday in a three-set tiebreak to Oklahoma State's Sophia Blanco.
Harmon expected to have his sleep patterns horribly disrupted following the graduation of senior leaders Megan Kurey, Kendal Woodard and Natasha Prokhnevska followed by junior Alexis Prokopuik's transfer to the Univ. of Washington.
But he's sleeping like a baby these days -- or at least as well as any coach can sleep -- after striking gold (and blue-chippers) on the recruiting trail. It started with the signing of three of the nation's most highly regarded players, Jones, Gizdova and Otsuka. Then he found a fourth overseas in Hungarian Luca (pronounced Lucha) Fabian.
Jones was the No. 15 junior player according to Tennis Recruiting Network, fifth in the Southeast and top-ranked player from Tennessee, while Gizdova was No. 29, third in the Mid-Atlantic and No. 1 in Maryland. Both rated "Blue Chip" prospects. Otsuka, No. 23 nationally, seventh in the Southeast and No. 1 in Georgia, rated five stars. That gave Tech the eighth-ranked recruiting class, third in the ACC (behind North Carolina (#3) and Virginia (#6). A couple of weeks later, Fabian came on board.
"I'm just saying, 'Thank God,'" said Harmon, with a laugh. "It's really competitive with recruiting. We compete against Vanderbilt and Duke and North Carolina and Virginia, within our geographic area. Those are some really top schools. We were fortunate to get players who like the city, who like Georgia Tech for the academics, the history with the tennis.
"They have to really embrace the fact that they're going to be challenged and they're going to also be working in class with some of the brightest people in the country," he continued. "So it takes a special kind of kid but we've been fortunate to be able to get a few of those. The girls get along so well."
And a good thing, as they comprise half the squad.

Georgia Tech puts its 3-0 record on the line against 3-0 and No. 5/3-ranked Clemson in a nationally televised ACC showdown on Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
  * Georgia Tech stands at 3-0 for the fourth time in the last six seasons (2011, 2013, 2014 and 2016). Prior to 2011, the Yellow Jackets were 3-0 just four times in 40 seasons since 1971 (1984, 1990, 2001 and 2005).
 * Georgia Tech welcomes one of its oldest rivals to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Thursday when it squares off against Clemson for the 82nd time in a series that dates back to 1898. Tech officially owns a commanding 50-28-2 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.
  * The Yellow Jackets have been especially dominant against Clemson at home. Georgia Tech has won five-straight over the Tigers at Bobby Dodd Stadium and holds a commanding 44-13-2 edge in games played between the teams in Atlanta.
 * Georgia Tech is 7-2 at home against nationally ranked opponents under head coach Paul Johnson. The sterling 7-2 mark includes two wins over ranked Clemson squads (2011 and 2014) and a 3-1 ledger against top 10 teams at Bobby Dodd Stadium since 2008.
  * The Yellow Jackets are ranked seventh nationally and second in the ACC in scoring defense, allowing just 10.3 points per game this season.
  * For the first time since 2001, Georgia Tech has held each of its first three opponents of the season to 14 points or less

Scouting Clemson
Clemson is coming off a 2015 (14-1) ACC Championship season, only barely losing to Alabama in the national championship game 45-40.
Last year, the Tigers beat the Yellow Jackets easily at home 43-24.
This year's Clemson offense, sluggish through a pair of six-point wins over Auburn and Troy the first two weeks, exploded in a 59-0 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday. "We're very confident," quarterback Deshaun Watson said Monday. "We've got a lot of swagger on both sides of the ball."
Watson, a native of Gainesville, Ga., about an hour north of Atlanta, has some bad memories of facing Tech. As a freshman in 2014, Watson injured his knee and would eventually need offseason surgery, in the first half of Clemson's 28-6 - its last regular-season defeat.
"I have flashbacks about that," said Watson, who had missed the previous three games with a hand injury. "I was excited to play and then that first quarter going down. Of course, it's going to pop up in my mind, but it won't be anything too serious."

Georgia Tech Football Duo Honored
by ACC
Burden, Mills Named Yellow Jackets' First ACC Players of the Week This Season
After helping lead Georgia Tech football to a
Senior Center Freddie Burden
convincing 38-7 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday, senior center Freddie Burden (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro) and freshman B-back Dedrick Mills (Waycross, Ga./Ware County) were named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Offensive Lineman of the Week and co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Burden anchored an offensive front that paved the way for Georgia Tech (3-0) to record a season-high 511 yards of offense (289 rushing, 222 passing) in the romp over Vanderbilt. The 6-4, 299-pounder recorded a team-best eight defenders taken to the ground in only three quarters of work.
Freshman B-Back Dedrick Mills
Mills ran for 58 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's rout. With scoring runs  of 15, four and five yards, the 5-10, 217-pounder became the first true freshman to score three touchdowns in a game in head coach Paul Johnson's nine seasons at the helm of the Yellow Jackets.
Burden and Mills are the first Yellow Jackets to earn weekly honors from the ACC this season.   Georgia Tech puts its undefeated record on the line on Thursday night when it hosts unbeaten No. 5/3 Clemson (3-0) at Bobby Dodd Stadium. A limited number of tickets for the nationally televised 7:30 p.m. affair are still available and can be purchased online at togetherweswarm.com.   The Yellow Jackets are 7-2 at home against nationally ranked teams under Johnson while Clemson rides a 17-game regular-season winning streak into Thursday's contest. Georgia Tech has won five-straight over the Tigers at Bobby Dodd Stadium dating back to 2005.

Tech Volleyball Wins Rematch at Coastal Carolina, 3-2. Begins ACC Play Friday at Pittsburgh

Senior Teegan Van Gunst put down 26 kills to lead the Georgia Tech volleyball team (9-3) in a five-set thrilling win in the rematch against the Chanticleers (9-3) on Saturday night.
Senior Outside Hitter Teegan Gunst

Set one began as a see-saw game. The set was tied 12-12 when Coastal Carolina used a 6-1 run to take an 18-13 lead and gain momentum to win the set 25-17.
Georgia Tech evened the match 1-1 with a 25-21 second-set win. The Jackets took a 15-14 lead and made it 20-14 advantage. Coastal Carolina fought back within two, 21-19, but the Jackets held on for the win.The momentum pendulum swung back in the favor of the Chanticleers in set three who won 25-18.
Down 2-1 in the match, Georgia Tech did not give up. Set four featured three lead changes and six tied scores, including a 21-21 knot late in the game. Tech put together a 4-1 rally fueled by a pair of kills and an ace by Teegan Van Gunst to win 25-22. Tied 8-8 in the final frame, three straight kills from Teegan Van Gunst put Tech in the lead 11-8. Coastal Carolina recovered to tie the game 12-12. The Jackets rallied off the next three points to claim the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
"This win means a lot to our group," head coach Michelle Collier said. "We knew it was going to be another fight, on their home court, and we stay composed and together. Teegan led the way offensively, but I think the more important things we did don't show up on stats. We played together as team; we didn't give up on any points and earned this win. "Our pre-season schedule was very tough and we superseded the expectations. Now we shift our focus to ACC play and our goal is to continue to get better."

We look forward to hosting Michigan at home in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and our in-state rival, Georgia.
"This is a very exciting time in our program, and I look forward to our fans having the opportunity to see our team compete with the best teams in the country in the best conference in the nation in the ACC."
Tech opens the 2016-17 slate by welcoming Samford on Friday, Nov. 11 to McCamish Pavilion. The game will be part of a season-opening double-header with the men's basketball team. Game times will be announced at a later date.

Tech  Swimming & Diving Announces
2016-17 Team Captains
Host White vs. Gold Intrasquad Meet This Weekend
The Georgia Tech swimming & diving program is excited to announce its team captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season in Andrea Demick, Morgan Lyons, Chiara Ruiu, Rodrigo Quadros Correia and Ben Southern.
Voted on by their fellow teammates, the five captains look to lead a program that continues to excel both in and out of the pool under eight year head coach Courtney Shealy Hart.
"It is a great honor and a privilege to be a captain, especially to be voted on by your peers and teammates," stated Coach Hart. "This group of individuals are seen as leaders by their teammates. They are expected to lead by example both in and out of the pool. With this honor comes higher standards and expectations, which they have accepted. They serve as the liaisons between the team and the coaching staff throughout the season and are expected to continue to help contribute to the continuing growth of this program."
Demick, a senior diver for the Jackets, competed at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in each of the last three years and is coming off a junior season in which she overcame an injury that hampered her for most of the season to place second among the team on the 1-meter springboard for the year with a career-best mark of 299.40. She recorded points for the Yellow Jackets at the 2016 ACC Championships and was tabbed a 2015-16 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American Honorable Mention last year.
Lyons, who is in her third year at Tech in 2016-17, is coming off perhaps her best season yet last year as a sophomore in which she set new career-best times in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly events. She was a member of the record breaking 200 free relay squad at the ACC Championships.
Ruiu, a redshirt-senior in 2016-17 who swept the record books claiming two individual records and three relay records last season, also set seven career-best times in the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast. She swam on the record-breaking 800 free relay team at the 2016 ACC Championships.
The lone underclassman to be named a captain, Correia is entering just his second season with the Jackets this year. Last year as a freshman, Correia joined the team during winter training and made an immediate impact both in and out of the water. He took no time rewriting the books at Tech, cementing himself firmly into the all-time top-10 lists in nine events in his first two months at Tech. He won the B-final at the 2016 ACC Championships in the 100 back with a time of 47.13, a new school record, and the B-final of the 100 free at the ACC Championships in a time of 43.55. Correia was also a member of four relays at the ACC Championships.
Southern, a 2015-16 CSCAA Scholar All-American Honorable Mention selection, will look to help lead the Yellow Jackets in his senior season on the Flats in 2016-17. Southern, who scored points in both individual and relay events at the ACC Championships last year for the Jackets, had a strong junior campaign in 2015-16.
The Yellow Jackets will be in action this weekend, Sept. 23-24, as they host a White vs. Gold Intrasquad meet as a final tune-up before opening the 2016-17 season versus Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. in McAuley Aquatic Center.
