Georgia Museum of Agriculture & Historic Village @ ABAC |
|
Dear Friend,
Fall is almost upon us! If you are like me, cool mornings and autumn traditions can't get here soon enough. Around my house those memories and traditions eminate from in the fields, the woods or my momma's kitchen. During the fall in South Georgia nostalgia seems to run rampant. The fall season at the Museum is no different!
This September, October and November the Museum will be fully engulfed in traditional autumn activities. Wedding season comes into full swing and we are extremely pleased that many couples are sharing that special day with us. Fall Frolics at the Museum kicks off in October, so come on out, pick a pumpkin from the patch and let your kids lead you through the Corn Maze. The smell of boiled peanuts, cane syrup cooking and fiddlers on the porches tickling your eardrums will guide you through the myriad of different activities taking place in the Historic Village.
We look forward to sharing with you all the wonderful sights, sounds and memories this fall will bring to the Museum.
See you soon!!

The Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at ABAC adopted a new logo in August. During archive catologing efforts, Museum Curator Dr. Lisa Lishman found a hidden gem. In a small non-descript plain brown folder titled, "E.G. Wright Company, Philadelphia," was a beautiful hand-drawn seal penned during early renditions of a seal intended for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Upon opening the folder and viewing its contents Dr. Lishman immediately thought about the Museum and the efforts to find a logo that provided a representation of the Museum at a glance. The Museum staff felt the Seal had all the details they were looking for in a logo. It captured the "feel" of the Museum with antiqued coloring; tied into the Historic Village with the barn, buildings, animals, and equipment; it also captures agriculture with hay and cotton boles. Importantly, it is a part of ABAC history and enhances the alignment of the Georgia Museum of Agriculture with ABAC. |
ABAC Natural Resource Students Help
Improve GMA Nature Trails
Several ABAC students from the Forest Recreation and Ecotourism class will be assisting the Museum in developing trails, signs, and outdoor exhibits. The class incorporates group projects for the students to gain hands-on applicable experience within the resource recreation, ecotourism, or interpretation field. These are genuine projects which students will finish before the semester is over.
The GMA is excited to have four student groups applying their projects. The self-guided nature trail leading around the gristmill pond will be improved with further signs and interpretive stations. The nature trail leading from the Langdale Nature Center will extend further around the lake and interpretive signs will be constructed. A bird house exhibit, showing various houses and the species which use them, will be built on the Langdale Nature Center's deck.
Throughout this fall, continue to look for these projects. The goal is for all projects to be finished by the end of November. The Museum as a Living Laboratory is thriving. We are looking forward to working with these students, assisting in their education and gaining wonderful improvements to the facility

Painted Ponies, Market Saturday
& Bottles and Brushes
In the Gallery, guests to the Museum still have the opportunity to view the Painted Ponies, Painted Dreams exhibit featuring the work of North Georgia artist Ann Yarbrough, which will be here until early October. The exhibit features over 20 of Yarbrough's painted ponies, as well as many of her original pencil drawings. For more information or to schedule a group tour or a private visit, please call Polly Huff, GMA Gallery Coordinator, at 391-5222.
Every Saturday in September is a market Saturday! Guests to the Museum can shop the Wiregrass Farmers Market from 9 until noon each Saturday for the freshest locally grown produce around. We are the only producers' market in the area, which means that you get the opportunity to purchase produce from the farmers who grew it. The Wiregrass Farmers Market also features natural handmade crafts, artisanal breads, herbal remedies, and much more. For vendor information or questions about the market, please call Polly Huff, GMA Gallery Coordinator and market liaison at 391-5222.
The gallery will host the September Bottles & Brushes class on Friday, September 21st. Participants will work on Brenda Rose's painting "The Colors of Fall". To register, please call Polly Huff, GMA Gallery Coordinator at 391-5222.
Class fee is $25 per person, or $40 for couples.

Volunteer Opportunities Abound!
Volunteers are essential for us to carry out our mission of preserving the past and educating people. With all the activities during fall at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, the need for volunteers increases dramatically. If you provide the time, we will provide the training. One can volunteer as little a one day or as much as every day. Last year we had 59 people who volunteered over 4,163 hours. This summer our 17 youth apprentices volunteered over 700 hours.
Volunteers come in all ages, from all walks of life and from all different background. For example, we have a mother-daughter team who work during the week.

Want to ride the train? One of our biggest areas have for volunteer opportunities is as a conductor on the steam train on Saturdays. We try to run two shifts of volunteers on the train each Saturday.
Throughout October we will offer a Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze. Help is desperately needed during both of these events during the week. The Friends of the Georgia Museum are the core of our volunteers during the weekdays but it takes 3 - 5 people to help with the school groups who come to visit. Generally on the week days a volunteer assists from 9 am until 1 pm.
If you would like more information, call Lynn McDonald, Volunteer Coordinator, at 229-391-5223 or email her at lmcdonald@abac.edu.

The Gibbs House Garden
written by Joe Glossup
| | Gibbs House Garden Bounty |
The Gibbs House Garden exceeded all expectations. The garden was filled with a bumper crop of Okra, Peas, Squash, Butter Beans, Eggplant, Tomatoes and Cantaloupe.
From the beginning it was well thought out. The ABAC boys from Dr. Smith's Farm Operations Class did a great job in laying down irrigation, tying into the main line and putting in feeder lines. The ABAC nursery so generously provided nice plants. Monty and the boys tilled the ground, planted, cultivated and watered the seedlings. Theresa, Billy, Jordan, Clint and Cecil tirelessly worked to see the plants were well nurtured. Each interpreter in the Village, from Bryan the Blacksmith to Brock, Billy's Grandson, worked in the garden and tended to it's bounty.
The Gibbs House Garden was a prime example of how communities worked together to make things happen. Visitors enjoyed soup made from the Garden's Okra, Squash and Butter Beans. The Garden also empowered everyone working at the Museum, further instilling a sense of community, allowing us to enjoy the traditions and rich heritage associated with such an endeavor. I was proud to be part of this effort and received satisfaction from seeing it grow and enjoying its bounty.
(Mr. Glossup has implemented his own organic garden at the Cravey House. He is shown with a bumper crop of Sweet Potatoes from his garden.) |
