'New' Smith in command at Roswell

Roswell was tasked this season with replacing a two-year starting quarterback who threw for more than 5,500 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 with 73 total touchdowns in his career.

That was K.J. Smith. Now meet Trey Smith. There’s no family relation, but there was a strong resemblance Friday night, when Trey passed for 249 yards, rushed for 162 and had a hand in five touchdowns in a 42-35 victory over Westlake.

Smith scored on a 64-yard run for the game-winner late in the fourth quarter.

“They’re not related, but they were super close when they were both here,” Roswell coach Chris Prewett said of his new and old quarterbacks. “Trey has been in our program for as long as I can remember. He was an incredible player in our Junior Hornets program. Trey has been running our offense at the JV level for the last two seasons. He has complete command of our offense.”

Trey Smith is GHSF Daily’s Player of the Week. The award, sponsored by Sports Turf, will be presented to him at his school Wednesday.

Chattooga

GHSF Daily’s Offensive Line of the Week is Chattooga’s unit of Luke Reece, Fletcher Crowe, Malcolm Wiggins, Luke Busby and Dakhari Black with tight ends Brayden Howard, David Lowe, Stanton Peppers, Koi Dodd and Kadin Fife. They paved the way for 320 rushing yards in a 56-6 victory over Gordon Central and produced the state’s first 1,000-yard rusher this season. Zayden Cook’s 221-yard effort gave him a state-leading 1,060 yards in four games. “He rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a junior behind an inexperienced, young offensive line last year in the first year of a new scheme,” Chattooga coach Roone Gable told GHSF Daily last week. “As the line has gotten a year older, bigger and stronger in the weight room, it has allowed Zayden to show more of what he is capable of.” Chattooga’s line coaches are Dustin Powell, Danny Wilson and Paul Ellis. The award, sponsored by Alfa Insurance, will be presented to the linemen at their school Wednesday.

Johnson County defeated Treutlen last week. We reported otherwise in two places Monday. ... Rodney Hackney is the coach at Tri-Cities, which is 3-0 for the first time since 2015 after a 21-20 victory over 18-point favorite Dunwoody last week. We misidentified the coach in Monday's Saye It Ain't So.

Today’s featured inductee is former Washington High School star Silas Jamison. Jamison will be inducted into the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Silas Jamison

Washington High School Graduate

Silas Jamison was the star quarterback for Booker T. Washington’s 1958 Georgia Interscholastic Association Class AA championship team and the Bulldogs’ 1959 Class AA runner-up. Jamison was identified by longtime GIA football coach Raymond “Tweet” Williams as the greatest football player and all-around athlete from Atlanta during the GIA era, which went from 1948 until Atlanta schools joined the Georgia High School Association in 1966. Jamison passed for three touchdowns and scored another in Washington’s 33-6 victory over Macon’s Ballard-Hudson for the 1958 championship. It was Washington’s fourth GIA title, the most of any school at that time, all under Georgia Sports Hall of Fame coach L.C. Baker. Jamison turned down several college football opportunities, including one from Indiana, when he signed a bonus contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played four minor league seasons. “He was the top ball player in Atlanta, an all-around athlete,” said Williams, who coached outstanding teams at rival Turner High. “We had beaten Washington about five straight times until Jamison came around. He was great.” Former Spencer player and longtime Carver-Columbus coach Wallace Davis confirmed Jamison’s reputation, saying: “He had a receiver named Joe Allen. You weren’t going to beat Washington with them boys.” Jamison’s career ended in an upset when Ballard-Hudson defeated Washington 14-7 for the 1959 title.

Today’s interviewee is North Cobb Christian coach Matt Jones, whose team defeated Ringgold 41-39 in a six-overtime Region 7-2A game between top-10 teams last week. The GHSA adopted a new overtime format this season. Each possession after the second overtime will be a single-play conversion attempt from the 3-yard line.

Matt Jones, North Cobb Christian head coach

1. How would you describe Friday night’s game to those who didn’t see it? “It was a rollercoaster of a game. Punch and counterpunch. We won on our last two-point try. The atmosphere at our home field was amazing. We were in the lead for much of regulation, but Ringgold just never quit. They are a tough team. It was a true back-and-forth game that could have gone either way.”

2. How do you feel about the GHSA's new overtime format? “I think the new overtime format was a great move by the GHSA. The biggest thing is you better have your two-point plays ready. It happens quick with not much time to transition. The new format makes things even more exciting as it's just one play back and forth after that second overtime. I don't think anyone in our stadium sat down for the last 30 minutes.”

3. Another new GHSA thing is having private and public schools mixed in region play, then splitting for the playoffs. Friday's game was a private-public game, of course. How do you feel about that format? “I have spent most of my time in public schools and now have been in private for four years. I am not a fan of pulling all the private schools out for a separate playoff. I think they ought to apply the multiplier and then let everyone be in the playoffs together. I believe the multiplier levels the playing field enough. Personally, I love having publics, city schools and privates all play each other in the playoffs. I think it makes Georgia high school football second to none.”

4. What would you want people to know about your team? “North Cobb Christian is a hidden gem in Cobb County. We have a school culture and team culture that I would put up against anyone. Our leadership is focused on all the right things – faith, doing right by the kids and being excellent in everything you do. Our kids are very blue collar, believe it or not. A lot of our families are working multiple jobs to be able to send their kids to a better school situation. We are on the cheaper end of most privates around Atlanta.

“Football-wise, we have a great coaching staff that has come together, and we've got a great sophomore quarterback in Teddy Jarrard. We have plenty of skill kids to go along with that and a lot of youth. We only have eight seniors on our roster, and none of them play on offense. We started nine freshmen/sophomores Friday night, so we are very young still. We've had 13 kids to get college football offers in the last three years, and we'll have a few more off this year’s team. I believe we are building something that is fun to be a part of. More than anything, I'm proud of our team culture and that our kids still want to play for one another. That is becoming less and less common in today's society.”

In recognition of the contribution the GHSA contest officials make to our member schools and student-athletes, the GHSA and NFHS will celebrate “Fall Officials Appreciation Week” on Oct. 6-12. There will also be designated weeks for winter (Jan. 12-18) and spring (April 6-12) seasons to recognize and show your appreciation to contest officials for their service.
