Schools’ top recruits this century

From Calvin Johnson to Trevor Lawrence to Elijah Griffin, here are the highest-rated recruits this century by Georgia team, according to GHSF Daily’s research of the 247Sports Composite rankings.

If there are a few more recent players, it’s because Georgia’s reputation for developing major Division I and NFL talent continues to rise. In the first decade of this century, Georgia averaged 17.3 players in the consensus top 250 nationally. That improved to 22.1 the next decade. This decade, it’s up to 26.0.

Twenty-seven Georgia teams have their best college prospect this century on their current roster.

There are some surprises. Deshaun Watson is no longer Gainesville’s most highly rated prospect. That honor goes to current Red Elephants linebacker Xavier Griffin, a five-star recruit committed to Alabama. Current player ratings aren’t final, however. That doesn’t happen until high school careers are finished and 247Sports does the final tally.

Another interesting school runner-up is Georgia All-America safety Malaki Starks at Jefferson, edged out by his former teammate, Clemson freshman Sammy Brown. Those two former five-star recruits have a reunion Saturday when Georgia opens against Clemson in Atlanta.

Many are no surprises at all. Who else but Travis Hunter at Collins Hill, Roquan Smith at Macon County or Nick Chubb at Cedartown?

Not every Georgia school is included. There are 40 GHSA schools, mostly smaller or newer ones, that have no players assigned state rankings on the 247Sports Composite this century. Getting a 247 composite ranking historically entails being rated on all major recruiting sites (ESPN, Rivals, 247, On3).

The players are listed with the year of their senior season.

Bryson Tarver, Swainsboro

Bryson Tarver, a senior quarterback/defensive back at Swainsboro, is the scoutSMART Student-Athlete of the Week. Tarver has 190 rushing yards, three touchdowns and 12 tackles in the Tigers’ first two games, He has a 4.0 GPA, is a member of the Honors Program, and received the UGA Certificate of Merit. His recognition includes the highest math and science average (three times) and being included on the 2022 and 2023 all-region teams. Tarver is a FBLA Chapter Officer and a member of the Spanish Club and the Tigers’ track team. “He is the ultimate competitor in the classroom, weight room, practice field and under the lights,” Swainsboro coach Scott Roberts said. “He has sacrificed so much of his time and energy for his teammates, school and community. Bryson has been a huge reason for our success since his freshman year, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have him in my life. He takes his obligation as a role model seriously and is someone that kids and adults should aspire to emulate.”

GHSF Daily, in conjunction with scoutSMART, will be announcing a football student-athlete of the week each Friday this season. The ideal candidate will be outstanding on the field and in the classroom. Please click here to send nominations to Diane Bloodworth.

Here is where Georgia teams stand in several national polls. The numbers on the left are this week's rankings; the numbers in parentheses are last week's rankings.

How do teen athletes recover

from ankle sprains?

Teen athletes are no strangers to ankle sprains – in fact, nearly half of all ankle sprains occur in children and teens.

Luckily, many mild sprains can be treated at home. If an athlete is diagnosed or showing symptoms of an ankle sprain, they should:

  1. Rest: Immediately remove the athlete from an activity. Do not remove their shoe until ice can be applied – a tight shoe can limit initial swelling.
  2. Ice: Apply crushed ice in a plastic bag directly over the skin for 20 minutes, every one to two hours.
  3. Compress: Wrap the ankle with a first aid bandage, starting at the toes to the ankle.
  4. Elevate: Keep the athlete’s ankle elevated above the level of their heart.
  5. Medicate: Give the athlete teen acetaminophen as needed for the first two to three days to relieve pain.
  6. Rehabilitate: Begin range-of-motion exercises the next day to prevent stiffness. Discomfort is normal. While your athlete is seated, have him imagine that his big toe is a pen, and have him trace all the capital letters in the alphabet as large as possible.

It’s important to keep these tips on hand when injuries happen, but if symptoms don’t improve, make an appointment with an orthopedic specialist.

Today’s interviewee is Clarke Central quarterback Hezekiah Millender, whose team defeated Oconee County 37-36 last week after trailing 24-0 in the first quarter. Millender, who committed to Boise State this month, led the comeback win, going 12-for-16 passing for 250 yards and four touchdowns and rushing for 75 yards on 10 carries. Millender transferred to Clarke Central this year, moving from Goodyear, Ariz., for his senior season. Clarke Central plays tonight at Jefferson.

Hezekiah Millender, Clarke Central quarterback

1. How did you change your mindset after trailing 24-0 in the first quarter? “I pretty much had the same mindset the whole game, just go out there and just try to get it done, just try to put points on the board. I had faith in our defense. I knew our defense was going to make adjustments and get it together for the second half. I knew the offensive game plan was just to get it in the end zone and make plays. [Coach David Perno] and Coach [Ricky] Bustle just told me to be calm and it was going to be a great comeback, that we’re going to do it.”

2. What was the reason behind leaving your hometown of Goodyear, Ariz., and coming to play for Clarke Central? What has it been like getting to know a whole new team for your final season of high school ball? “Just kind of getting the different environment of football, you know. It was kind of hard leaving my team in Arizona, but out here, they welcomed me. They’re very welcoming, and they played a big role. I came here with my friend/brother, so we both kind of just stuck with each other the whole time, and it just kind of all worked out. It’s been pretty much the same [as my old school]. I’d say football is football.”

3. Being a senior, how do you feel you have progressed as a player throughout the years? “I just got smarter, I got bigger, got stronger, faster, quicker and just learning how to read coverage better. I feel like my freshman, sophomore and junior year I just kind of went out there and played instead of watching films. I feel like now I’m more prepared mentally, and I know how to study film and what to look at in a defense. I feel like I do well [with] feeling pressure and knowing where the pressure comes from, stepping in the pocket, rolling out of the pocket. I feel like I can do better [with] just trying to quicken out my drop a little bit and try to get the ball in my hands a little faster. I would think that [my freshman self] would be happy with myself today and that I worked hard.”

4. What led you to your college commitment? What was different about Boise State? Was there a reason behind committing on your 18th birthday? “Boise State, that was my third offer, and I just always had a feeling. Ever since I stepped on campus, I was like, ‘Yeah, this is definitely a place I want to be at.’ They’re all welcoming, they’re really good coaching, and it’s all about brotherhood there. They have a really good community behind it. So, it all worked out. It’s going to be better. I can see family more, and they can come to more of my games, stuff like that. And nobody knew I was going to commit. Everybody kept asking me questions about when I was going to commit, and I just didn’t reply. I just, surprisingly, popped it and just did it on my birthday [Aug. 20].”
