The Department of Public Works Staff is in the process of converting water utility services over to the new metering system. For proficiency, we will be working our way through the Township one section at a time. Utility customers will be mailed a letter requesting that you call the Township Office to schedule an appointment for the meter change. This work will be performed from the interior of your home and will require that the water be shut off for approximately 1 hour. Your collaboration with this effort is appreciated and will contribute to the completion of this project in an efficient manner.

New Homeowners: Principal Residence Exemption Deadline is June 1st
New homeowners must own and occupy their property (among other qualifications) by June 1st to receive the Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) for the 2024 year. PRE exempts homeowners from paying school operating millage on the summer tax bill. For new homeowners who purchased an existing home or a completed new build, the PRE form is almost always filled out at your closing and mailed to the Township by your title company. However, for homeowners who purchased vacant land and then built their new home, completion of the PRE form is often missed. Residents can easily check to see if they filed a PRE form by reviewing the Change of Assessment Notice that was sent to you in February or by going to our website, Georgetown-mi.gov, click on “Property Info” and then search for your address. On your property’s page, scroll down to the Principal Residence Exemption Information section and verify that it shows 100% for June 1st. Below is an example of a property that has 100% PRE for 2023.

The Georgetown Township Fire Department is announcing the launch of PulsePoint, an app designed to help community members save lives.
Cardiac arrest causes 300,000-450,000 deaths each year in the U.S. If CPR and an AED are administered within the first few minutes, the chances of survival are dramatically increased. With PulsePoint, everyday citizens with CPR/AED training are empowered to provide life-saving assistance to nearby victims as emergency responders make their way to the scene. Anyone with the app located within close proximity of the incident can receive a push notification alerting them of the emergency, as well as if there is an AED nearby.
The program launched throughout Ottawa County in February thanks in part to HeartSafe Holland, a community program that raised over $30,000 to help connect the app to Ottawa County’s dispatch system. CPR/AED trained individuals are encouraged to download the app from their preferred app store; businesses with AEDs are also encouraged to register their device with the app.

Spring is here! The Georgetown Township Fire Department would like to remind residents that Spring cleanup does not include the burning of yard waste. Burning yard waste can easily lead to a variety of unfortunate incidents, including personal injury and property loss. In accordance with the Township Ordinance Sec 34: 141-148 (link to ordinance or to the info sheet), open burning of yard waste is not permitted except in areas designated as Agricultural or Rural Residential zones and with a burn permit. In most areas of the Township, recreational fires are allowed when done in a fire ring or pit (3ft in diameter or 3x3 sq ft). As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to the Fire Department at 616-457-2340.

Township staff receive many kinds of training, but in March several staff members participated in training that could save lives: CPR/AED certification. With thousands of people utilizing Georgetown Township facilities each year, having staff who can assist in an emergency situation is a priority. Training was conducted by licensed instructor and Georgetown Township Fire Department member Erik Nederveld and participants included members from all Township Departments.
