Geoscience Studies at LSU - The Pet Rocks Project and Course-Embedded Research

It's not common for a sophomore in college to get the chance to use sophisticated imaging and analysis equipment like an electron microprobe so early in their studies. That sets Louisiana State University apart, where undergraduates in the geoscience program are immersed early on in geological research with hands-on experience using the EPMA, which stands for Electron Probe Analyzer, often more commonly just called a microprobe.

Photographing the Hidden Universe: Connor Matherne Shares His Passion for Astrophotography

Connor Matherne is an accomplished astrophotographer! His work has been featured by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the websites AstroBin and Amateur Astrophotography. His images were also published in The Astrophotographer's Guidebook: A Complete Guide to the Best Astrophotography Targets of the Year. Connor is a graduate student in the Department of Geology & Geophysics as well as an undergraduate alum of the department.

Check out the Milky Way for yourself! Connor provides some insight about the Milky Way season: Throughout the year, things rise and set at different times in terms of constellations throughout the sky. In the spring and summer, as well as a little bit into the fall, the Milky Way starts to show up above the horizon. As the months progress, it will show up earlier in the night. In April and May it will be visible for almost the whole night.

Dutrow Elected to GIA Board of Governors
 
Dr. Barb Dutrow, Adolphe Gueymard Professor of Geology was elected to the Board of Governors (Directors) of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Prof. Dutrow is one of two research scientists on the board of 17. She was selected for her expertise in mineralogy and gemstones, her experience in field work and analytical instrumentation, and her leadership in professional societies. Barb is co-author of the world's longest and best selling textbook on Mineral Sciences. GIA is the international leader in providing education, laboratory services and state-of-the-art research to the gem and jewelry industry with a mission to insure the public's trust in gems and jewelry. GIA has 13 laboratories and schools in the US (CA and NYC), Europe, Asia and Africa and are developers of the famous four C's for diamond grading.
