Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD) Relief

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and  Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) have become epidemic in this country. LPR is a condition in which acid from the stomach travels up the esophagus (i.e.refluxes) and then silently goes down the airway which causes anything from a sore throat to a dry or lose cough and/or hoarse voice.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to your digestion is that it is responsible for digesting your food!

As simple as this sounds, please remember Mother Nature does not make mistakes and placed acid in our stomach to do many things:

  1.  kill pathologic bacteria that has entered the stomach from the mouth
  2.  stimulate the production of enzymes that are low-pH (acid) dependent in the stomach and small intestine.
  3.  breakdown of food in the stomach before it continues into the small intestine.
  4.  stimulate the lower esophageal sphincter that is acid sensitive for its closure, to close and prevent reflux of stomach contents. Most of us have Hiatal Hernias and need to close that Lower Esophageal Sphincter to keep the acid and enzymes in the stomach to do their job!

Proton-pump inhibitors- PPI’s (i.e. the stomach acid-inhibitors such as Nexium, etc), and the H2 blockers such as Pepcid and the OTC meds such as Gaviscon and TUMS are the first line treatment for GERD. Why is this an issue? There are no studies to document GERD is caused by an excess production of acid in the stomach. Yep, we created the drug and made up the rest!

What does Inhibiting Stomach Acid DO?

  1. Allows toxic mouth bacteria to grow in the stomach and small intestine (leads to the diagnosis of SIBO- Small Intestinal Bowel Overgrowth). BOTH GERD and SIBO are epidemics at this time.
  2.  Prevents us from correctly digesting our food and causes bloating, fullness and gas as well as cramping, because the enzymes needed to digest our food depend on acid to stimulate their production and to break down the food to be digested and we took this acid away.  
  3. Finally, the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) cannot adequately close because it closes in response to acid in the stomach, which we took away. Now we have Silent Reflux and don’t know it because acid caused a lot of our GERD symptoms, but we are still refluxing!!
  • This is why so many people have no burning but a stuck sensation or fullness/pressure sensation in their chest
  • This is also why we can develop a hoarse voice – “silent reflux” (Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) a condition in which acid that is made in the stomach travels up the esophagus and goes down the airway to cause a sore throat and an irritated larynx.
  • 4. Causes osteoporosis, pneumonia, malabsorption, SIBO and much more; maybe even early dementia


The reality is that acid is simply stagnant with the food in your stomach and moving up into the esophagus rather than down from the stomach into the small intestine in a timely fashion. Why is this? Should we not treat that issue, rather than wipe out the acid Mother Nature provides to protect and support us? Gut mucosal integrity is essential for both competent digestion and the correct absorption of nutrients.

Let's restore Gut Mucosal Integrity and Aid Digestion. Does this not make the most sense?

Factors such as digestive enzymes, mucus, bacterial flora, and low pH (yes! An acidic environment!), are integral to our gut mucosal integrity and to gut function!

Whether you are on a PPI (Nexium, etc.), or the H2 blockers (e.g. Pepcid/Famotidine) or OTC GERD meds or no medications at all, we want to address GERD the same way.

What are the Common Symptoms of GERD

  • A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn), usually after eating, which might be worse at night or while lying down.
  • Backwash (regurgitation) of food or sour liquid.
  • Upper abdominal or chest pain.
  • Trouble swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Sensation of a lump in your throat.
  • Hoarse voice

What do I mean by clean and nutrient dense food? As many of you know I like to recommend we eat an Ant-Inflammatory Diet with no processed foods from boxes, jars, cans or bags and nothing is cooked in the microwave. If you are eating clean, unprocessed and nutritious food, this means protein of all types, many vegetables and fruit with small amounts of well grown grains. Cooking at home is very important as well and the internet offers millions of healthful recipes. Essentially, I recommend the Mediterranean Diet, which is what I just described above.
