Commissioners Present 30th Anniversary Commendation to Cornerstone Family Medicine

At its public meeting on November 21, 2023, the Garrett County Commissioners presented a proclamation to Dr. Sotiere Savopoulos of Cornerstone Family Medicine, recognizing and celebrating the medical practice's 30th anniversary. Established in 1993, Cornerstone Family Medicine specializes in family medicine and obstetrics and has served residents in Garrett County and the surrounding region for the past 30 years. Read more.

Ribbon Cutting Held for Riverside Suites & Grille

A ribbon cutting was held on November 30, 2023, to celebrate the grand opening of Riverside Suites & Grille. Those in attendance included Garrett County Commissioners Paul Edwards and Larry Tichnell, County Administrator Kevin Null, and Chamber President Andrew Fike. Garrett County Chamber of Commerce Diplomats Connor Norman, Julie Mead, Kristin Skeweris, and Tracy Kelley assisted in the official ribbon cutting and presented Joe and Stephanie Kehoe with a First Dollar of Profit certificate. Outdoor Recreational Institute Opens at Frostburg State University

Local business leaders and education officials have utilized $1.4 million in grant funding to create an institute at Frostburg State University to promote the outdoor recreational economy in Western Maryland. The mission of the institute is to train a workforce while seeking to recruit outdoor recreation and lifestyle manufacturing businesses to the region. In addition to FSU, Allegany College of Maryland and Garrett College are participating by offering coursework for students based on the needs of the outdoor economy. Read more.

Amazon to Buy Energy from Backbone Solar Farm

Amazon reportedly plans to buy renewable energy from the Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) Backbone Solar Farm Project in Garrett County. The solar farm project, which will be built on the former site of a 120-year-old Vindex/Arch Coal mining site, is a $200 million investment from CPV in a brownfield. This project is expected to create 200 jobs and will be the largest solar farm in the state. Amazon is expected to use the new facility to power its Amazon Web Services data centers, along with its fulfillment centers and physical stores. It is also one of 78 new solar and wind projects in which Amazon has announced investments so far in 2023. Read more.
