State of the City Open House 2024


The City of Garland invites all residents to attend our 2024 State of the City open house event on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at The Atrium, 300 N. Fifth St.


This free event is your guide to Garland, with access to departments and staff, as well as a presentation on the City’s plans for the year ahead.


Mayor Scott LeMay will update residents on the achievements and accomplishments of last year, as well as talk about what’s in store for 2024, including news about a July 3 celebration. Mayor LeMay will also present his annual Make Your Mark award honoring an individual or organization making a positive difference in Garland. Learn more.

Affordable Connectivity Program Offers Free or Low-Cost Internet


Dallas County officials are helping residents apply for free or low-cost internet services through Wednesday, Feb. 7.


If your household is below 200% of the federal poverty line or if you live with someone who receives certain government benefits, you may be eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program, which is administered by the Federal Communications Commission. Those who qualify can use their benefit for free service if they choose a plan that is $30 a month or less. If their home internet service is more than $30, they'll receive $30 off the plan.

Garland Cultural Arts Presents David Ramirez Friday, Feb. 2


Prolific singer and songwriter David Ramirez will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.


Ramirez has earned a following for his soulful, introspective songs and passionate performances. Most of his music contains themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, love and redemption. Ramirez's music is sorrowfully evocative, steeped in country and roots rock tropes while possessing the atmospheric tone of indie rock. In 2020, he was awarded Songwriter of the Year by The Austin Chronicle.

Garland Summer Musicals Presents the 3 Redneck Tenors Saturday, Feb. 3


Direct from Las Vegas, join the 3 Redneck Tenors for an evening of music ranging from gospel to country, to Broadway, pop and classical, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.


The 3 Redneck Tenors are a new breed in the “tenor genre” – their musical comedy features classically trained veteran artists. The 3 Redneck Tenors were top finalists on "America's Got Talent" and have been thrilling audiences since 2006.

Black History Month Celebration: Storyteller Toni Simmons at the South Garland Library


Celebrate Black History Month with storyteller Toni Simmons from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the South Garland Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.


Discover Black culture through the exploration of folklore. Simmons will bring African and African American stories to life with songs, rhythms, chants, drama and audience participation.


All ages are welcome to join in and help tell the stories. This free event is funded in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts. No registration required.

Travels in History Lecture at Landmark Museum Saturday, Feb. 3

 

The Garland Landmark Museum's Travels in History series will continue with its latest lecture, Downtown Garland's Square of Change, at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at the museum, 393 N. Sixth St.

 

Coffee, wine and treats will be served. Tickets are $10 for non-members or you can join The Landmark Society at the door for free admission. Questions? Email Heritage@GarlandTX.gov.

Sweetheart Dance Saturday, Feb. 3


Dads, granddads and uncles, experience a magical evening with your little sweetheart at this year's Sweetheart Dance, Saturday, Feb. 3, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. 

 

The evening includes dinner, dancing, a professional 5x7 photo and a special gift for each little girl.

 

Ages 3 to 7 dance from 5 to 7 p.m. Ages 8 to 15 dance from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. If you have a sweetheart in each age category, you may attend the dance of your choice.

Garland in the News


Garland ranks 15th in the nation and tops in North Texas among "25 of the Cheapest Foodie Cities to Visit," according to a Jan. 14 story published by personal finance company and online publisher Wealth of Geeks. Four days later, Garland landed real estate website Point2's 17th spot among United States "Cities Where Young Americans Stand a Chance of Owning a Home."


"Garland boasts affordability in many areas, including education opportunities and living," according to the Wealth of Geeks story. "So it's understandable that they're high on the affordability list when it comes to dining out." Learn more.
