Garland City Council Announces New City Manager


The Garland City Council has named Judson Rex to serve as City Manager. The appointment was made official during the Council’s Jan. 17 meeting and is effective immediately.


Judson joined Team Garland two years ago as the Assistant City Manager for Planning and Economic Development. He is stepping into this new role following the retirement of Bryan Bradford, who will serve as City Manager Emeritus until May 1.

Public Input Meetings for New Senior Activity Center


Share your ideas with us! The design process for the new Garland Senior Activity Center is beginning, and we want your input.


There are two upcoming public input meetings where you can tell us what you'd like to see in the new facility:


  • 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Granger Recreation Center, 1310 W. Avenue F
  • 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at Audubon Recreation Center, 342 W. Oates Road

Be Prepared with Backup Power Sources


A battery backup or generator can be incredibly helpful during a power outage or emergency, but they need to be in working condition. Remember to test your battery backup or generator before it is time to use it. Also, make sure to run generators outside, away from the home.

Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant Letters of Intent Deadline: Monday, Jan. 23


Neighborhood groups registered with the Office of Neighborhood Vitality may apply for up to $100,000 in matching funds for neighborhood enhancement projects on public property.


Additional assistance is available for voluntary neighborhood groups. Letters of Intent are due Monday, Jan. 23.

Celebrate Vietnamese New Year at the Library Saturday, Jan. 28


Families and children of all ages can celebrate Vietnamese New Year, or Tet, with a performance from the Lion Dance Troupe at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the North Garland Branch Library, 3845 N. Garland Ave.


The Lion Dance is performed every year at Tet and celebrates luck, health and prosperity. The Lion Dance Troupe will explain the dance and then perform it. After the performance, children ages 4 through 12 can make lion dance masks out of cardboard!

Sweetheart Dance Friday, Feb. 3


Dads, granddads and uncles, experience a magical evening with your little sweetheart at this year's Sweetheart Dance, Friday, Feb. 3, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. 

 

The evening includes dinner, dancing, a professional 5x7 photo, and each little girl will receive a special gift.

 

Ages 3 to 7 dance from 6 to 8 p.m. Ages 8 to 15 dance from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. If you have a sweetheart in each age category, you may attend the dance of your choice.

City Council Meeting

Jan. 24

The Garland City Council will host a special Work Session and public hearing to discuss the proposed 2023 Capital Improvements Program at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.

District 5 Town Hall
