State of the City Address Monday, Feb. 13


Get on Garland's inside track to start off 2023!


The State of the City Address is back in-person this year! Don't miss this chance to get all the latest from Mayor Scott LeMay and speak directly with representatives of City departments, including public safety, utilities, neighborhood services and many others.


The open house with City departments will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St. The Mayor's address will begin at 6:30 p.m.


Video presentation of the address will be available online at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at GarlandTX.gov.

Trash Collection Resumes After Winter Storm


Trash, recycling and brush and bulky collection has resumed following last week's winter storm.


Tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 6, last Friday’s trash, recycling and brush and bulky routes will be picked up. Services are expected to be back on regular schedule Tuesday, Feb. 7. However, yellow week recycling routes originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 31, will be picked up Saturday, Feb. 11.


Residents with extra trash due to pickup delays may leave it out for brush and bulky pickup on their assigned days. The City’s Recycling Center, 1426 Commerce St., is available for drop-off of excess recycling.

Public Input Meeting for New Senior Activity Center Wednesday, Feb. 8

 

Share your ideas with us! The design process for the new Garland Senior Activity Center is beginning, and we want your input.

 

Tell us what you'd like to see in the new facility at a public input meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Granger Recreation Center, 1310 W. Avenue F. A Zoom link is available on the Senior Center Project webpage.

February Is Black History Month


February is Black History Month, a time to remember important people, events and contributions in the United States.


During February the City will celebrate with a variety of events such as lectures, movies and exhibits that recognize the history of Black Americans. Check back each week to see more activities and events throughout the month.

Creativity Nights Tuesdays in February

 

Creativity Nights will feature a new, simple craft each week. Crafts in February will celebrate Black History Month. Some crafts will utilize STEAM concepts, and instructions will be available in English and Spanish.


Families with children ages 3 to 9 may drop in to the Central Library, 625 Austin St., between 6 and 7 p.m. every Tuesday in February to complete the crafts.


The event is free and no registration is required.

Black History Month Lecture at the Library Thursday, Feb. 9


Patrons of all ages can learn about Black history in Garland at a special presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the North Garland Branch Library, 3845 N. Garland Ave.


Ricky McNeal, President of Garland’s NAACP Unit 6256, will present “Anti-Black Violence and Resistance in the Diaspora.” McNeal will describe the obstacles and barriers related to housing, education, employment and community issues that African Americans had to overcome when they migrated to Garland.

First Responders Soccer Tournament Saturday, Feb. 11


VN United FC will host its inaugural First Responders Soccer Tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Winters Park, 1330 Spring Creek Drive.


There will be teams from fire and police departments around the metroplex who will compete for bragging rights.

Garland Board & Volunteer Fair Tuesday, Feb. 28


Join us for an evening of networking and visiting with several area nonprofits to find your next volunteer opportunity!


This year's Board & Volunteer Fair will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.


This event is a partnership of the City of Garland and Kiwanis Club of Garland. We hope to see you there!

The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.
