Mayor's Annual State of the City Address Available Online



In his keynote from a two-hour open house event Feb. 13 at The Atrium at the Granville Arts Center, Mayor Scott LeMay reflected on 2022 and outlined what's in store for 2023.


LeMay also presented his annual Make Your Mark Awards. Among those, members of the Juneteenth Committee were recognized for bringing Garland its inaugural Juneteenth Celebration held last June.

Black History Month Movie: "Selma" Wednesday, Feb. 22

 

During February the City is celebrating Black History Month with a variety of events that recognize the history of Black Americans.


The City of Garland Cultural Arts Department presents a free showing of the 2014 film "Selma" (rated PG-13) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.

 

The film features a chronicle of Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign to secure equal voting rights through an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965.

 

Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking for all Plaza Theatre events is available at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Black History Month Movie: "Just Mercy" Thursday, Feb. 23

 

The City of Garland Cultural Arts Department presents a free showing of the 2019 film "Just Mercy" (rated PG-13) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.

 

World-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner.

 

Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking for all Plaza Theatre events is available at the Central Library, 625 Austin St.

Music for the Movement Presented by Garland Independent School District


The Garland ISD Department of Family and Community Engagement presents this event to celebrate Black History Month and provide Garland ISD students an opportunity to showcase their musical talents.


Join the musical celebration from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

Bake the Book for Black History Month


Choose a recipe from our selected book or bring your favorite recipe that fits this month's theme: Black History Month.


Enjoy a taste of the baked goods while discussing the book, the theme or baking in general. The fun will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.

Middle Grade Makers: Celebrate Black History


Middle Grade Makers will celebrate inventor Sarah E. Goode for Black History Month at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Walnut Creek Branch Library, 3319 Edgewood Drive.


Goode, one of the first black women to receive a patent, designed and patented a convertible bed in 1885. Makers will design and create their own miniature pieces of convertible furniture.

Live at the Plaza: The Peterson Brothers Friday, Feb. 24


Garland Cultural Arts and Jimmy Wallace Guitars present The Peterson Brothers at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Plaza Theatre, 521 W. State St.


The Peterson Brothers combine youthful energy and modern influences with soul, funk, blues and jazz to create a sound that is uniquely their own.


The duo has toured throughout the U.S., playing with and opening for Gary Clark Jr., the late B.B. King and other musical greats.

Garland Board & Volunteer Fair Tuesday, Feb. 28

City Council Meetings

Feb. 20, 21 and 22

The Garland City Council Work Session will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20. Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21. A special meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, for the City Secretary to hold a drawing to determine the order of candidate names on the ballot for the City's May 6 general election. All three meetings will take place at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St.
