GIVE THE GIFT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNITY
|
|
If you find this newsletter a valuable resource, please share with your neighbors.
Communicating information and making connections with each other -- that is what will turn us from a collection of houses and apartments into a neighborhood, from strangers into neighbors.
GDNA mails the newsletter to 1336 contacts each week, but we have over 7000 residents. Garden District is 75% rentals. Our biggest challenge is reaching those neighbors who are tenants. We want to create a neighborhood where people love where they live and stay long term in our community. Please forward the newsletter or ask a neighbor to join.
|
|
CHANGE THE WORLD - CREATE THE NEIGHBORHOOD YOU WANT TO LIVE IN
|
|
This is one of my favorite quotes. The more involved I am in the neighborhood, the truer I find this quote from Margaret Mead and the more often I see it come to life in the every day actions of neighbors.
For instance:
- A neighbor stepped up in the SW Quadrant this year and applied for and received two speed humps for a street that had become dangerous from speeders.
- A small group of residents in the NW Quadrant have split up the streets amongst themselves and each goes out one to two times a week to pick up litter.
- A resident has offered GDNA her construction skills and talents for years. She has built three Little Free Libraries for GDNA, including the newest one this year at the community garden. She has also built and painted numerous mess mitt tubes and boxes for plastic bags for dog waste. There are some in every quadrant now.
- A resident volunteers countless hours to maintain the vegetated water harvesting basins on Pima. He has created a show piece in Tucson for water harvesting and landscaping with native plants.
- Over a decade ago, a resident who had never written a grant before wrote a $500K grant to build sidewalks on both sides of Columbus in Garden District.
- Two residents on Justin organized their neighbors and applied for a Storm to Shade grant to plant trees and install streetwater harvesting basins along one side of Justin.
- Recently, a group of neighbors in the SE Quadrant noticed that their 90 year old neighbor did not return home from church. By the afternoon they had become worried and contacted other friends and then started calling hospitals. Their neighbor had had a stroke and collapsed in the Sprouts parking lot. With the help and support of her caring neighbors, she is home safe and sound now and surrounded by the folks on her street who know each other and look out for one another. They embody the true meaning of a Neighborhood Watch.
There are so many, many other instances in Garden District of a few - or sometimes even just one person - taking the initiative and addressing an issue. Follow your dreams of what kind of neighborhood you want to live in and work to bring that dream to reality. What are your dreams for your home, your street, your neighborhood? If you need help from GDNA, let us know!

Below is an instance in Dodge Flower Neighborhood where a small group of people, lead by Gretchen Ronnow, co-facilitator of DFNA, made a difference for their neighbors and created a beautiful gem in Dodge Flower.
FROM FRAN GARCIA, NORTH DODGE NEWSLETTTER: On Flower St. between Dodge and Alvernon, you may have noticed the new two-panel wall mural conceived, designed, and painted by residents of Oasis Apartments.
The mural on the west side depicts night-blooming flowers and night-flying birds; the mural on the east depicts daylight flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert and Tucson.

SCAM - Someone on the social media site NextDoor reported that she received a scam email not long after ordering the free test kits. Probably scammers were taking advantage of the government offering free tests again and sending out random emails knowing that some of them would reach people who had just ordered free kits.
The email looks legit with a photo of a test kit. It says "Delivery suspended." Then in big red letters "OPEN IMMEDIATELY". The recipient contacted the post office who told her NOT TO OPEN IT, it was a scam and to report it to spam@uspis.gov. You can forward a spam email without doing any damage to your device. Forwarding will also allow you to see what the actual email address is for the sender. Reporting scams to your email service (Cox, Gmail, etc) helps them block scammers and reduces the amount of spam you will receive.

TAKE THE ONE WATER SURVEY
|
|
The One Water 2100 master planning process, through public feedback, identified water supply and conservation as the top two areas of concern. Now, Tucson Water needs your help to guide long-range decisions about Tucson's water management practices and its Capital Improvement Program. Follow the One Water 2100 website link below and take the water management strategy survey. Share the survey with friends, family, and neighbors because community input is important to our water future. You can take a quick look at the Our Water Story before taking the survey. This interactive tool provides an overview of what the One Water approach is, information about Tucson’s water resources, and highlights some of the conservation program achievements. The survey will be online through January 31st. Take it and learn more here.

Once again, residents can recycle their Christmas trees through the City of Tucson’s TreeCycle Program. The program begins on Monday, December 26, 2022 and continues through Monday, January 16, 2023. TreeCycle sites are located throughout Tucson and Oro Valley (see list of TreeCycle sites below).
Your Christmas tree is a sustainable resource. Remove everything from the tree, including the stand, lights, ornaments, wire, and tinsel, before dropping off at the TreeCycle sites. Also remember to Tree Pool and bring your neighbor’s tree — fewer trips means cleaner air.

COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
Please consider a donation of non-perishable foods or money to the Community Food Bank so they may help provide food to those in need.
FROM STEVE KOZACHIK, Ward VI councilperson: We recognize that making trips to the ward office with things for all these groups is an added chore in your day. Having interacted with families represented by each of those for whom we’re gathering items for, I can say that the gratitude expressed makes that extra effort worth it. The people receiving from you continue to be very grateful for your graciousness.
Thank you to all of you who are helping meet these ongoing
