Join the West Homewood Community Exchange

The West Homewood Community Exchange was started by a small-group at Shades Valley Community Church and, along with the West Homewood Farmer's Market, the group set-out to establish initiatives that would build community in West Homewood. The group seeks to build community by answering the question "What is Good?" versus "What is Wrong?" with our community.

The West Homewood Community Exchange is a "time-banking" system where members can offer services, or skills (i.e, a home cooked meal, tutoring, professional services, babysitting, grass cutting, used items, ... "items") to other Exchange members.  Each item is given an hour value determined by the member providing the item. Those hours, or hour, is then banked into the Exchange's website and can be "spent" with any other member of the group.  The Exchange is built on the premise that it is GOOD to value people's time equally, it is GOOD to get to know your neighbors in a practical and meaningful way, and it is always a GOOD exercise to consider new and innovative economical systems.  The West Homewood Community Exchange currently has close to 60 members who have traded around 700 hours since it's inception in February 2012.

The Community Exchange recently entered the State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant program where the top 40 causes (chosen from 3,000 applicants) would win $25,000.  We ended up not winning the $25,000 but were grateful to the spotlight this brought to this initiative. Fox 6 News came out and did a story on the Community Exchange.

Want to Get Involved?
The market team meets every Tuesday night at Shades Valley Community Church at 6:30pm. The group is called "What is Good" and our heart is to connect with each other, as well as our community, centered around God's goodness. You are more than welcome to join our group as we spend a few minutes every week studying God's goodness and then we work the rest of the time planning for the West Homewood Farmer's Market as well as the West Homewood Community Exchange.

Please join us. We have a lot of work to do and we'd love to have you be a part of our team.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the market. We will be sending an email once a month, until the markets begin (then it will be once a week) to remind you about the market.

Sincerely,

Kenyon Ross
