Dear KASD Friends and Family,

Welcome to 2017.  I hope that your new year is starting strong.

Around the district, the new year brings a number of exciting things. More than just the cold weather, icy mornings and thoughts of hibernation, we are looking forward to all the opportunities this upcoming year holds, the start of which is registration for the 2017-2018 school year!

If you have an incoming 4K or Kindergarten student (or if you know someone who does) and they have not yet received a registration packet, please contact our office and we will get you rolling with all that Kaukauna Area School District has to offer!

Please read on to find out some of the other exciting things going on around the district during this cold but busy time of the year.

Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy the Galloping Ghost Stories,

Mark P. Duerwaechter, Superintendent

COMPUTER CLASSES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

Back for a third year, members of the Kaukauna High School's chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) will offer a set of three computer classes for senior citizens. Learn more and sign up here!
DVC SURVEY - THE RESULTS ARE IN!

KASD's District Vision Committee Survey results are in. Thank you to those of you who participated! Your responses and your dedication to making our district better are what keep us moving forward.

Please join us at the January 23rd meeting of the Board of Education to hear a little more about these results and what they mean for our district. Results will also be published and explained on the District Vision Committee page on the KASD Website after they have been presented to the Board. We look forward to continuing along this journey of success.
BATTLE OF THE BELLS

Kaukauna Area School District really is a special place to be. Last month, we told you about a few of the many service projects going on around the district throughout the month of December. One additional project was the annual "Battle of the Bells" competition, where a number of local school districts compete to serve the highest number of hours ringing bells for the Salvation Army - Fox Cities.

For the FIFTH straight year, the Kaukauna Area School District has donated the most time toward this incredible annual campaign. Congratulations, Ghosts. Together, we did it again. This is another of so many examples of why Kaukauna is truly a special place to be.

RIVER VIEW STUDENTS RECEIVE LEGENDARY VISITOR

On January 6, 2017, students at River View Middle School welcomed a special visitor: Hall of Fame Packer Chester Marcol. Marcol shared some of his stories from his time with the Packers, along with his message of strength, hope, perseverance and overcoming the odds to beat some of the issues he faced after his time in the NFL.

NBC 26 even stopped by during the visit to hear about what he had to say and why it was so relevant for our students.
ACTIVITIES UPDATE

We've been busy! This winter has been packed with activities at KHS:

Our Boys Basketball team started out the year against some tough opponents, including LaCrosse Central, Kimberly, Whitnall, Appleton East, and Oshkosh North. The team enters this week with a 5-4-0 overall record and with junior Jordan McCabe just SIX points away from breaking the school's career points record.

Girls Basketball continues to work hard, losing two very close games at their recent Baraboo tournament. They're ready and excited to take on Oshkosh West on January 17.

The Gymnastics team continues to show improvement with each meet. KHS will host both conference (February 17) and sectional (February 25) competitions this year.

The Kaukauna Dance Team hosted over 60 teams in their annual Dance Classic this past weekend. Their regional competition is just around the corner.

The Wrestling team recently hosted 31 teams from seven states in the Annual Cheesehead tournament. Congratulations to Montini Catholic (Chicago, IL) on a third title. KHS wrestlers are currenly 7-0 in FVA duals, have won 52 straight duals since 1999 and are 162-2 during that time. They'll compete in the Pulaski Invitational January 28th, and then conference competition February 4th. KHS will then host regional (February 11) and individual sectional (February 18) competitions.

KHS will host our annual Forensics tournament on February 18th.

The Polar Plunge is coming soon - February 17, 2017 to be exact. NHS students are registering themselves to take the plunge into Lake Winnebago to benefit the Special Olympics. Don't forget to sign up!

We're off to a great start this winter, and we look forward to all the good things to come! And you can always get updated information about what's going on at KHS by following the Kaukauna Ghosts on Twitter!
