Dear Friends of the Arts,
We welcome a new year, and with it come many hopes and dreams. Our hope is that we can once again focus on our mission of sharing art and entertainment in-person. What we have always done best is to bring people together through the arts, which of course has been impossible for the last 20 months, and we hope to be able to return to in-person interactions and events in 2022. And one of our dreams is in progress, as we build the new Galena Center for the Arts.
With this growth, we need to add to our staff. See below for details!
Thank you for all your support and encouragement. It means the world to us.
We wish you a loving and art filled new year!

Progress Report for December
Doing a major renovation isn’t easy in the middle of a pandemic. Costs have gone up, in some cases tripled or quadrupled, since we did our first estimates on renovating the building, and supply issues are real. However, our local construction companies have worked hard and made a great deal of progress. Thank you to each and every tradesperson who has helped.
The exciting news is that Earl Thompson Masonry will begin to build the elevator walls this week! At the moment, our lower level space is chock-a-block full of concrete bags and cement blocks, which will be turned into an elevator shaft. Hooray!
A number of people have offered to help us with painting the walls in the studios and dressing rooms. Due to COVID, we can’t have the usual group work parties that we would like, but we will be scheduling individuals and couples to come in and get some paint on those walls. Please email Carole to set up a time.
Many of you offered mirrors that we can use for our mirror wall. We were hesitant to accept them earlier, as we didn’t have a clean, safe space for mirrors in the midst of all the construction. The good news is that we now have a safe storage space for them upstairs in the building!
We will be there to accept mirrors on Saturday, January 8, from 11 am -2 pm, and Tuesday, January 11, from 3-5 pm. Please email Carole to let us know that we should expect you!

Virtual Exhibit
Great Expectations
A new year, a new perspective on life, new experiences, new relationships, new... What are your Great Expectations?
Twenty-two artists from our Tri-State area are sharing their talents and their expectations. Click here or on the image below to view. The birth of children, the tenacity of plants, a walk down a path, a sunrise or sunset, and even making art has its expectations–to create the vision they see in their mind or the expectation of selling their work. The artists are varied in their mediums. Painting, photography, fabric, clay, or the beautifully chosen words of poetry have all been represented here.

With the physical gallery still shuttered, and construction in our new site, we thought you might want to see what our regional artists are up to.

Lisa Towers is primarily a painter, but also enjoys photography and creative writing. As the world continues to be a planet in trouble in so many ways, her work turns more and more to allegory in an attempt to describe our time and place.
When Covid started, Studio Works, where she formerly taught in Dubuque, closed its doors permanently, and Lisa moved her studio home. She set up her basement for accommodating small groups of no more than three or four students and turned the dining room into her own painting space. She began teaching online and sets her classes apart from the numerous offerings by providing one-on-one instruction through Zoom or FaceTime chats, in addition to the lectures and video demonstrations that are included with her classes. For more information, please see her website at www.towersfineartstudio.com.
Lisa taught a portraiture class at the Center a couple years ago, and we hope to offer this opportunity again soon in our new workshop space when we open.

Corporate Spotlight for December
Exact Pest Solutions, Inc.
We are very appreciative of the many businesses that have become Corporate Members of the Center, and will be featuring them monthly in our newsletter as a way of letting everyone know the many ways they reach out to help their community.
With multiple trucks serving the Tri-State area, Exact Pest Solutions, Inc. appears to be everywhere! Tommy Saccomanno and Bill Perrin are the two local owner/operators of this thriving pest control company. They are known for their service to the community as well as their environmental responsibility.
In addition to pest control, Exact Pest Solutions, Inc. is a faithful corporate supporter of the Galena Center for the Arts and has been featured as a sponsor at Radio Shows. They began their corporate membership in 2017 and continue to make their annual corporate pledge. As proof of even more enthusiasm for the arts, Tommy and his wife Julie Bruser, who is now the office manager for the business, have been regulars at Center events.
It is local business support, such as Exact Pest Solutions, Inc., that is so important to the future of the Galena Center for the Arts. To learn more about this sponsor, go to www.exactdbq.com.

Broad Ideas
is right around the corner
and we want to include you!
All genders, ages, and abilities are encouraged to submit work and be a part of our show. Remember, this is an inclusive feminist arts show that purposely includes a wide range of ideas and artists. At its core, Broad Ideas is a safe space to tell and honor women's stories. If you are in need of inspiration, this year's theme is Resilience. Work should include your story, the telling of a woman's story, and the idea of Resilience.
