Greetings!

Hello!  Well, time sure flies when you're busy...  This is, at long last, the third issue of the Gabrielle Becker Designs Newsletter.  Getting newsletters and other marketing tasks completed can be challenging, I'd rather make jewelry.

I've been busy creating new pieces and taking classes to learn more advanced techniques.  Bought myself some great new tools including a Smith Little Torch and new forming blocks (for metals).

I'm currently creating many new pieces to take up to Portland for the Professional Women Air Traffic Controllers annual conference next month.  I look forward to seeing my friends/best clients again.

Big Family News:  We've adopted a second dog, a 6 y.o. black Labrador Retriever named Audrey.  She is 90 lbs of sweetness and the 'dog love of my life'.  In her honor (and in anticipation of a gorgeous Spring) I am offering a scaled

Audrey, our new love
Audrey!

discount on any in-stock jewelry on my website through March 31st!  The discount is 10% off orders of $30 or more, 15% off orders of $60 or more, and 20% off orders of $125 or more (order amounts are before shipping added).  The discount will be calculated when you check out, click on the Update button if it doesn't show as you order.  Gift Certificates and custom orders are not included.

Please check my website every now and then to see what's new and what's on sale and don't forget to bookmark www.gabriellebeckerdesigns.com.

Have a terrific March,

Spring Season 2011 Pantone Color Selections and Accessory Trends

Obi Belts are the BIG fashion accessory trend for this Spring, they're selling out everywhere!  I wore those 26+ years ago, not going back...  But, they look good on the models.

Big bangle bracelets in woods, resin, and metals are very popular again this Spring.  Big, wide cuff bracelets are still the rage as are statement necklaces and eye-catching cocktail rings.

Sunglasses, 70's-inspired big frame, tinted sunglasses are a must (just watch Scarface and find a pair like Michelle Pfeiffer is wearing).  The disco era is threatening...

This is the scoop from Pantone on Spring 2011 colors:

'Citing exotic destinations like Africa, India, Peru and Turkey as inspiration for spring 2011, designers continue to satisfy consumers' need to escape everyday challenges with intriguing color combinations that transport them to foreign lands.

"The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "By cleverly combining complementary colors, those that are opposites on the color wheel, they have created a striking intensity to the palette. These unique color combinations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall, with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes."

Flirtatious Honeysuckle is a feel-good hue that brings a festive sense of playfulness to this season's palette. This vibrant pinkish-red for both apparel and cosmetics makes consumers feel alive, and is a perfect post-winter pick-me-up.

Spicy, gregarious and persuasive describe Coral Rose, a sophisticated orange that, much like Beeswax, a warm, honeyed yellow, conjures up feelings of faraway lands and locales. Pair either of these piquant hues with a cool, refreshing color-wheel opposite like Regatta for a vibrant color combination that will add zest to any wardrobe. Romantic, fanciful Lavender implies sensuality with its subtle hint of red undertone. Combine it with Beeswax or Coral Rose for a unique counterpoint.

Alluring Blue Curacao evokes thoughts of tropical destinations and pays homage to the 2010 Color of the Year, Turquoise. Practical consumers can continue to incorporate enticing Caribbean blues into spring by pairing Blue Curacao with warm, complementary colors like Honeysuckle or Coral Rose. Peapod, a fresh yellow-green, brings an organic element to the palette and is reminiscent of the green shoots that signify change and new beginnings traditionally found in spring.

Trans-seasonal neutrals ground this season's palette and provide a stable backdrop for all the other colors. The so-called "nude hues" are represented in the range of ethereal Silver Peony to dramatically deep Russet. Another dependable background color, Silver Cloud, is the quintessential neutral that consumers can rely on to coordinate with everything in their closet.

For 17 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring you the season's most important color trends. This report previews the most prominent hues for spring 2011.'  Click here to go to Pantone's Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011.

March Birthstone is Aquamarine!

Aquamarine in Quartz
Aquamarine in Quartz

Aquamarine, named for the Latin phrase "water of the sea", is the blue to blue-green variety Beryl.  Beryl also contains other gem varieties, including Emerald, Morganite, Heliodor, and Red Beryl (aka Red Emerald).  Aquamarine ranges in color from a faint light blue to blue and bluish-green, with lighter colored stones being the more common type.  Light green Beryl can be transformed into Aquamarine if heated to 750 F (400 C).

Aquamarine is a relatively common gemstone, and is affordable in lighter colors. Deeper colors command high prices. Enormous transparent crystal masses of Aquamarine have been found over the years, and exquisite gems weighing thousands of carats have been cut from them.

The light blue to blue-green color of Aquamarine may fade upon prolonged exposure to light, so it is especially important to purchase this gem from a reliable dealer. Aquamarine is a hard and durable gem, but it may develop internal cracks if banged hard.

Light blue Topaz is easily mistaken for Aquamarine. The colors of these two gems can be identical, and their physical properties are very similar. Topaz is generally less expensive, and some fraudulent dealers may sell their Topaz as Aquamarine (I buy mine from reputable dealers in Tucson).

Unlike Emerald, Aquamarine gems are often completely flawless.  The costs of producing synthetic Aquamarine are very high when compared to the relative abundance of this gem, so synthetic Aquamarine is generally not produced for the gemstone market.

The largest Aquamarine ever mined was found in the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910.  It weighed over 110 kg, and its dimensions were 19" long x 17" diameter (48.5 cm x 42 cm).  Bet that gem put a smile on someone's face!
