A Note from the Director

To paraphrase the immortal words of Martha Reeves, Summer’s here and the time is right to visit the library… whether you are looking for a new Summer read, want to borrow one of our museum passes for a quick getaway, or just need a cool place to relax on a hot day – we are here for you. The library is always adding new materials (both in physical copies as well as electronically – did you know that Hoopla is back?) and offering activities for patrons of all ages and interests.

I guarantee you that, it you take a little time to browse our collections and events calendar, you will find yourself saying “I didn’t know the library had that…”

I would like to thank the library staff & Grafton town employees for all they did to keep the library running smoothly and continuing to offer the welcoming and engaging service that we strive to provide. I would also like to thank the Grafton library community for patience and understanding as we work our way through some challenges. Your support of the library is why we do this. I encourage everyone to stop by and say ‘hello’ – I would love to meet you and learn what I can do to make the Grafton Public Library a vital community hub where we can share some time together.

You should also stop by to see the wonderful sea creatures that the children of Grafton were kind (and creative) enough to provide for my office window.

Building Update

Work on the Cupola Restoration Project continues when the weather allows for crews to be on-site. Our Contractor will be meeting with our Preservation Consultant to ensure that the paint used in the project is accurate to the original Cupola and maintains its historic nature.

Unfortunately, the Children’s Room has been closed since last August due to a summer storm that flooded and damaged the Community Room, portions of the Children’s Room, Children’s Workroom (where the staff offices are located) and the entirety of the Children’s Program Room.

Construction was completed to repair the damaged sections of walls and flooring of the Children’s Room and the Community Room. The Community Room has been reopened and repurposed as a play space for children. The Friends of the Library section is being used by the Children’s Room department as well.

The Children’s Room carpet was not installed properly and safely. This has resulted with the necessity of the complete replacement of the carpet. The Board of Library Trustees voted to replace the carpet to ensure the safety of the public and longevity of the flooring.

At first, it was thought that a partial replacement of the carpet might work out but due to the poor installation, this is not a safe option. The carpet tiles do not adhere to the floor correctly and pop out of place causing the adhesive solution to disperse. They are not reusable. This is the reason why the decision was made to replace the entire floor.

The Town Administrator’s office estimates that the replacement work may not be completed until the end of the summer.

We apologize for the delay which has caused a lot of discomfort to library patrons especially the youngest ones. We are sincerely sorry that the remediation, construction and replacement of the carpet has taken so long.

Children’s activities will continue throughout the summer months with the staff using the Community Room, Children’s Program Room, and the Friends of the Library’s space right off the lobby. A variety of programs will be offered off-site at local parks and the Willard House & Clock Museum as well.

If members of the public have questions about the status of this project, we encourage you to reach out to the Board of Library Trustees at trustees@graftonlibrary.org, the Assistant Town Administrator, William Blake at blakew@grafton-ma.gov or by filling out a form on the town website.

Fiction Spotlight

The Secret Life of Bees

By Sue Monk Kidd

Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna. This is a remarkable novel about divine female

power, a story women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.
