A Letter from GKC-PRSA

By Anita K. Parran

The Mentorship Initiative

Mentorship has always been beneficial for building relationships, opening doors of opportunity, and increasing the odds of success professionally and personally.

Because of the pandemic and the aftermath of that historic event, mentorships have increased in popularity because individuals are seeking new and creative ways to work and grow. Mentorly Enterprise reports that growth has skyrocketed beyond 400%.

That's why we're bringing back the GKC-PRSA mentorship program.

The purpose of our mentorship program is to:

  • Provide professional career guidance and advice.
  • Share life lessons and experiences.
  • Share networking opportunities.
  • Provide support and facilitate personal development.

What do mentors do? They draw on professional and real-world life experiences to share with mentees. Mentors are listeners, problem solvers, motivators, and advisors. Mentors wear many hats – but the relationship developed with the mentee will help define what role to take on.

We suggest mentors spend about 2-4 hours monthly with the mentee. Mentors are expected to make a minimum six month commitment in developing a relationship with the mentee (this could begin a lifelong bond).

What do mentees do? Mentees can come from every level of PRSA membership and matched with a suitable mentor. Mentees collaborate with the mentor to establish and nurture the relationship to get the most out of the experience. Benefits from connecting with a mentor include:

  • Receiving professional support and encouragement.
  • Gaining exposure to new ideas and new opportunities.
  • Receiving honest feedback and counsel.
  • Growing an enhanced professional network.
  • Being open to new ideas and setting goals.

Generative AI

Friday, March 22 // 7:30-9 a.m. via Zoom

Presented by the Iowa Chapter

Are you curious about how generative AI could fit into your communication plan, but not sure where to start? Is it another tool in your toolbox? We look at a fascinating AI journey from Jared Curtis, senior director of corporate communications at Maximus, who coordinated groundbreaking employee survey research to test a variety of AI- and human-generated content examples.

The surprising results have been a game-changer, establishing communication strategy and shaping codes of conduct, security, ethics, and policy.
