RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM “C.I.T.I.Z.E.N.”

January 17, 2022: MEII Enterprises is proud to announce the January 7, 2022 release of “C.I.T.I.Z.E.N.” the debut, five-track album from Ghanaian rapper Pope Nst.

“This album is unique for several reasons,” Eugene Marlow, President of MEII Enterprises, remarked:

“Pope Nst is an upper-level medical student in Ghana. He also has a stutter. But when you listen to his ‘flow’ you would never know it. He also writes lyrics in both English and Twi, the language native to Ghana.”

Pope Nst adds:

Stammering is what motivated me to come to medical school. I started rapping when I was in high school. I graduated in 2013 and auditioned in a radio rap competition in Kumasi, the capital town of the Ashanti region in Ghana. I was the first runner up. During the competition my flow (rap) was perfect, but I was always finding it difficult to express myself adequately when they asked me questions on live radio because of the stutter.

I decided to pursue medicine at the University so that in the future I can help people, especially children with such a speech disorder. Medical school admission is very competitive, but after three years of intensive studies, written exams, and interviews, I was admitted into the first medical school in Ghana and one of the best in Africa, the University of Ghana Medical School. All along I was still recording mixtapes and releasing singles. I am currently in my fifth year of the six-year medical school training.

Pope Nst’s “C.I.T.I.Z.E.N.” album title refers to his strong attachment to Ghana’s history and culture. For him, the album is very personal:

I Love You (Worry No More): “This is my fifth year studying at the University of Ghana Medical School in Accra. I have been living with my mom all my life in the Ashanti region of Ghana before I left her five years ago because of school. I hardly visit her, but we talk on the phone every day. I wrote this song for her.”

Thanksgiving: “Giving thanks to God for saving my life seven years ago when I collapsed on my way home after a studio recording session. It was a severe malaria attack. I decided to thank God (I am a Christian) on this track for saving my life.”

Interlude: “This is a freestyle about my hometown in the Ashanti region where I was born and raised. The name of the town is Nsuta (hence, Nst).”

Epic: “I was rapping about my life in elementary school, The album cover photo was taken of my basic school class.”

No Drug Abuse: “Many of my friends I grew up with had great potentials to do awesome things, but drugs ruined their lives. "No Drug Abuse" is an Amapiano, one of the fastest rising genres in African currently. It originates from South Africa. The song has a powerful message.”

The lyrics of the five tracks are a mixture of English, Pidgin, and Twi, the Ghanaian language.

According to the 26-year-old Pope: “The album cover includes a picture of my elementary school class teacher and his students. I am second from the teacher’s left. “C.I.T.I.Z.E.N.s” are fans of my music.

Pope Nst Background and Comments:

Pope Nst was born in Nsuta, in the Ashanti region of Ghana in 1995. He became enamored with hip-hop/rap when he started high school in 2010.

Pope states: “Rap helps me to express myself in different ways. I write raps every day. It is the pillar of my music career. Before I could create my own lyrics, I used to write out verses from Ghanaian rappers Reggie Rockstone, Kwaw Kese, Okyeame Kwame, and Sarkodie. After that I would learn them and make sure I could rap along word-for-word anytime the song was playing. That was in high school. Later, I went on a radio show in Kumasi called ‘Focus FM Freestyle Friday’ which was then hosted by DJ Quest. The feedback I had from the listeners was amazing, and that really motivated me.”

Pope Nst has already produced one Mixtape Album and two Extended Plays (EPs). He works with Ipappi, one of the best music producers in Ghana.

“I get inspiration from almost everything around me. I have decided to write at least a verse every week, so anything I see in my environment is a rap to me. It takes me at least a day to write a 16- bar verse, but it can take me at least a month to write a full song.”

The Ghana hip-hop/rap scene is the biggest on the African continent. According to Pope Nst, “We have Sarkodie, M.anifest, Strongman, and Eno who is one of the best female rappers I've ever heard.”

“In Ghana, rappers usually represent the hood where they were born and raised. The most popular rap cities/communities are Kumasi, Accra, and Tema. I attended high school in Kumasi, so I've only worked with rappers from Kumasi.”

“Music has been a part of me long before I even decided to study medicine. I study every day, and I write lyrics every day too. I am going to be a neurosurgeon. I believe music is my primary purpose on earth, so I will never quit rapping.”

Pope Nst didn't talk about medical school on the “C.I.T.I.Z.E.N.” album. He is writing another album about his six-year journey through medical school that started in 2017: “I will graduate in 2023, so that album will be ready by then,” he projected.
