A Big Moment for SSI This Week!
On Tuesday, September 12, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act was introduced by Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Representatives Brian Higgins (D-NY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).
This bill makes long-overdue reforms to the SSI program that would empower millions of people with disabilities to earn and save more money for their futures.
Eighteen-year-old Emily Demko from Ohio spoke at a press event and shared:
"I can only work a total of 28 hours a week...I want to be able to save money in my own bank account...I want to be able to do all the same things that every adult does, even though I have Down syndrome...I want to live a full life, make money, save money, and be independent without losing Social Security."
