Quotes of the Day

A day will one day come when the story of Israel in modern times will speak not just to Jews, but to all who believe in the power of the human spirit as it reaches out to God, as an everlasting symbol of the victory of life over death, hope over despair.

— Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

From the Office of the New York Metropolitan Region FJMC President

Hello Hal,

Today marks the 76th birthday of the State of Israel, Yom Ha’atzmaut or Independence Day. Many of us ponder how we, as a people with the war raging in Gaza and virulent antisemitism and anti-Zionism raging on our college campuses, can we celebrate this milestone of the 20th Century. Even in this darkest of moments, we have to be able to take a step back, and see what this represents in the scope of Jewish history, and particularly the history of Jews in Europe. This is a kind of miracle.

The creation of Israel is a phenomenal success story. It is the realization of the prayers of generations of Jews to return to our homeland. Israel is now the world’s largest Jewish community and will be before long home to the majority of the world’s Jews. It has a democratic system that has proven remarkably resilient; a young and growing population; a dynamic economy; and a diverse, culturally rich

society. It has provided a home and refuge for millions of Jews from every corner of the world. It is a melting pot, driver and focal point for a flourishing contemporary Jewish and Hebrew culture. And it is above all a political reality which means there is no such thing in the world today as a Jewish refugee.

Even though this year we do not celebrate like other years, perhaps ‘celebrate’ is not a word we can really use. But for the sake of the generations who could not have imagined this miracle, it is still right, that alongside Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day), we come together as a Jewish people not just to mark but to embrace Yom Ha’atmaut (Independence Day). By doing so we affirm that all those who have sacrificed in the creation and defense of the State of Israel, have not done so in vain.

We stand in unison and exclaim Am Yisrael Chai; The People of Israel Live!

A celebration of the extraordinary legacy of the late Sheldon Harnick – Fiddler on the Roof lyricist, triple Tony Award winner, and Broadway legend – led by Lyrics & Lyricists favorite Ted Sperling.

Harnick was a beloved part of Lyrics & Lyricists from its inaugural season in 1971, appearing in more than 20 productions and events on our stage over 50-plus years. Sperling leads this loving look at Harnick’s remarkable body of work, with music from Fiddler, his Pulitzer Prizewinning Fiorello!, She Loves Me, and more, with songs including “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Miracle of Miracles,” “Tonight at Eight,” “When Did I Fall in Love” and others. Coupled with reflections on Harnick’s wondrous life in musical theater, it’s the kind of tribute you’ll only find at Lyrics & Lyricists.

Programming allows you to choose a minimum of 10 out of 20 listed programs for your club to run.

Administration includes paying your dues and updating your roster, including emails, having a successor lined up to be the next President, communicating with your membersseeking new members and having a budget and a calendar, things that you probably already or could do.

The above is not a complete list nor is it in order, which can be found in the criteria and application.

The deadline for your application is July 5, 2024. That sounds like you have a lot of time, and while it is certainly enough time, don’t wait! Fill it out now so that if you find yourself a little short of all the requirements, you have time to make them up!

Defending against Rising Antisemitism

Personal Reflection

By Steven Mandel MD

ADL in a recent study found that 44% of Jewish Americans experience harassment online, with 31% severe harassment. With this growing tide of antisemitism and antizionism in our college campuses and community, the time is now to support networks, raise awareness, educate our friends and neighbors, and advocate Jewish values of solidarity.

Antisemitism in any fashion will not be tolerated.

We each need to counter extremism, disinformation, and bigotry whenever it happens. We need to expose bias and hate. This can be in the workplace, schools, houses of worship, and establish partnerships with other organizations.

Men's Health

How to Get Unstuck

(Men's Health) To climb out of a mental rut, build up your emotional vocabulary. If you can, have breakfast with an off-duty psychologist. It’s a win-win for the two of you. You get to ask them questions about the human condition—preferably at a diner on a gray November morning—as I did with my psychologist/Phish enthusiast friend and the closest thing I have to a spirit guide, Brien Kelley, Ph.D. And they get to talk to someone about their work. People love talking about their work. A few minutes in, you’ll realize how insufficient your emotional vocabulary is...

The world’s oldest Jewish play inspires a new, immersive production

(New York Jewish Week)  There’s charoset, Manischewitz wine and a rousing rendition of “Chad Gadya.” So what makes this East Village seder different from all other seders — besides taking place after the conclusion of the Passover holiday? For one thing, it takes place at an experimental theater. For another, the haggadah doubles as an opera libretto — and its participants are both audience members and actors.
