Non-profit representatives are encouraged to attend GCIA Board Meetings!
Dear Gentillians,

A message from the President of GCIA:

Metro
Dalton Savwoir, Jr
The mission of the Gentilly Civic
Improvement Association (GCIA) is to provide leadership, resources, and education. This mission is achieved by building relationships between neighborhoods in Gentilly. GCIA does not take positions on issues, but rather hopes to provide information to the neighborhoods so that neighbors can and will assert their opinions, recommendations and feedback to the appropriate authorities and /or organizations. Occasionally, a consensus of all Gentilly neighborhoods may prove to be important and GCIA can help facilitate a unified voice. Our strength is to provide a framework in which we can organize the Gentilly area by neighborhoods. In addition, we are not organized to represent the neighborhoods or the neighborhood associations. Our role as indicated in our slogan is, "to provide support to the neighborhoods of Gentilly."  I hope that this statement gives clarification to the position of the Board of Directors of GCIA.

As most of us along the Gulf Coast know, the Atlantic hurricane season officially opens on June 1st and runs through November 30th. A couple of forecasters have predicted significant activity this year stretching from eastern Louisiana to the east coast of Florida. But this is by no means a certainty as hurricanes, like all weather, are tremendously difficult to predict, particularly this early in the season. However, most predictions are right around 16 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. That is statistically well above season norms with a 47% chance of hitting land (AccWeather.com).

If Hurricane Katrina has taught us nothing else, we now know to get prepared for hurricane season. Whether it's to know how and where to evacuate, the Contraband flow, or what supplies to gather; the motto is like the boyscouts, "Be Prepared." A presentation will also be made by the Evacuteer group at our general meeting on Saturday, June 15th. Please be safe this hurricane season and come to our general meeting for more information.

And finally, I would like to call your attention to the New Orleans Business Alliance and the City of New Orleans that will be launching ProsperityNOLA: A plan to Drive Economic Growth for 2018. This five year plan will address core issues affecting our local businesses as well as attract new initiatives to diversify our economy and increase new businesses. ProsperityNOLA is a ticketed event that will be held at the new Hyatt Regency Hotel on June 10, 2013. For ticket information, contact  www.nolaplan.eventbrite.com. The City of New Orleans will be celebrating its Tricentennial year in 2018.

Remember, GCIA supports the neighborhoods of Gentilly!

Regards,

Dalton Savwoir, Jr.

President

Seabrook Neighborhood Kids Volunteer to Restore Miltenberger Playspot

Over 80 volunteers belonging to the two groups, Projects with a Purpose (locally based), and Microsoft Tech Ed (in town for a conference), were surprised when they were approached by Jaylin, Janae and Janaiah Hills asking to participate. Upon returning from church on June 2, 2013, the three girls said they were excited to see their play spot being restored.  The girls quickly changed their church clothes and swung into volunteer mode.  Jaylin said she had been waiting for the day that she would be able to swing in the park again.  Janaiah thanked the groups for making a big difference in their neighborhood. Their schools, Gentilly Terrace  Elementary and Warren Easton High should be very proud of their students. According to Microsoft liaison, Carey Brown, this was a first time effort of the Microsoft Tech Ed group.

Previously, Microsoft Tech Ed had only put together care packages as a service project. This was the group's first off-site community project. Although it was a one day project, the two groups accomplished their goals of building three shelters, cleaning debris, and painting one side of the fence surrounding the park. The day ended with the girls ready to swing and 80 volunteers ready to tour our wonderful city.

Projects with a Purpose is owned by Juli Miller Hart. Juli says, "Projects with a Purpose has been overwhelmed with the support of the Seabrook and Gentilly neighborhoods. We have now executed and supported two projects in the Seabrook neighborhood. We look forward to bringing more volunteers to the Gentilly neighborhoods."

Dillard University's production of Dream Girls

Dillard University's production of Dream Girls was a huge hit among Gentilly residents. Vocals by the actors and actresses of Dillard's choir were superb. Grammy award winner,
Jennifer Holliday, was such a true spirit at the pre-party event where community members had great conversation and took photos with her.  At the end of the production, Ms. Holliday commended the singers and said that she was so proud of each one of them. The Grammy award winner was especially fascinated by the young lady who played Effie Holliday's part in the original Dream Girls. This dynamic singer performed her award winning song, I'm not living without you, leaving everyone touched. Ms Holliday said it was hard to believe that the original production was 31 years ago.

Seated (L to R): Lemona Chandler, Brenda Nolan,, Julie Andrews; Standing (L to R): Louise Joseph, Debra Joseph, Nick Harris, Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday, Katie Neason, Barbara Blackwell, & Helen Howard

NORA Lot Next Door Properties
has released a list of some 2,000 properties that are eligible for purchase through the Lot Next Door Program, including over 300 properties in the Gentilly area.
