Hello Jon,

Spring is a time of change, both in the natural environment around us and in the daily workings of our minds. Just like the abundance of growth in the forests, meadows and yards around us, March marks a time of growth in our promotion and advocacy for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

From Developmental Disabilities and Brain Injury Awareness Month to World Down Syndrome Awareness Day, there's no shortage of opportunities to immerse yourself and your community in meaningful advancements of inclusion, integration and independence for all.

Read on for more information on how you can get involved, see our latest community spotlight, brush up on the most recent news across the nation and discover local events and volunteer opportunities.

All it takes is one person to start the momentum of change. We hope you'll join our statewide community of advocates and help us create a stronger, more inclusive Arkansas.

~ GCDD Staff

March marks a special time for the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities, as we work with our partners and Arkansas communities to promote acceptance and inclusion. By increasing awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still encounter in their communities, we can create a statewide network of advocates -- something that would benefit each and every one of us. Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The theme of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2024 is "A World of Opportunities." Join GCDD and become a difference maker for a brighter tomorrow! We can create a world where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Community Spotlight:

Dr. Cindy Fong

Our Council members advocate for people with disabilities day in and day out. This month, we thank Dr. Cynthia Fong for her service.

A resident of Maumelle, Ark., Dr. Fong has a background in counseling and psychology. She is mom to three children, two of whom have an autism diagnosis.

Cindy has volunteered in various capacities over the years, advocating for individuals with autism or other disabilities. During her time on the Council, she worked with her fellow members to guide the development and implementation of the current five-year state plan. Fong served on the Council's Public Policy and Outreach Committee. The committee is charged with monitoring and reviewing policies and legislation to ensure that the rights and needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families are considered.

It also guides Council activities that educate stakeholders about the importance of promoting policies and practices to increase opportunities for independence, productivity and integration into the community. Cindy's term of service with the Council ended in December of 2023; she served as a parent advocate member for five years. In addition to her service with the GCDD, she has held positions with the Arkansas Autism Foundation, the Lifespan Respite Coalition, and the Partners for Inclusive Communities Community Advisory Committee. Fong is a trained Sibshop facilitator. Cindy also promotes the employment of people with disabilities in the community through her participation in the Arkansas Coalition for Disability Employment.

Your service on the Council was greatly appreciated, Dr. Fong. We wish you all the best in continuing your advocacy journey!

The Division of Services for the Blind (DSB) will host a Transition Fair on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn West Little Rock location. This is a great opportunity for Arkansans who are blind and their families to locate resources to help them navigate through life successfully. Lunch will be provided.

Families can RSVP to the event by emailing LaTasha Mays. Please reach out to her at LaTasha.Mays@arkansas.gov.
