GASSP Newsletter

Letter from the President

Dr. Chad Stone

It is a GREAT DAY to be a school leader. As the President of GASSP, I want to thank you for all you do for our students in the state of Georgia. As you read this newsletter, October has ended and November is marching us toward Thanksgiving. During the Thanksgiving month, please take time to thank the people who have made a difference in your life and made you Better Today Than Yesterday. Enjoy the season and a little break before winter sports are in full swing.

To be a great leader I believe we have to be servant leaders and lead by example. I want to encourage you to lead by example in your schools. Do things each day that make others around you Better Today Than Yesterday.

Mark your calendar. GASSP holds an incredible fall conference in Savannah every year. We decided to change our conference from a weekend event to a Monday and Tuesday event, so our principals have a chance to attend Friday and Saturday night school events and still attend our conference. This year’s conference will be held November 13-15 at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront Hotel. It will be a wonderful opportunity to come together with fellow leaders as we all learn and grow professionally. We are in the learning business, so we need to model ways to continue to learn and grow daily. Please make plans to join us in Savannah. The conference will make you and your school Better Today Than Yesterday!

The goal of any organization is improvement, and membership is the key to success for our organization. As I write this letter, we have over 980 members; we are so close to reaching our goal. Take time to call someone and encourage them to join their school at an Institutional Member level.

Please do not hesitate to contact me or your district representative with any question, concern, or suggestion you may have. We are here to serve you as you lead the middle or high school in your community.

Being a member of GASSP makes us all Better Today Than Yesterday!

Letter from Vice President

Kevin Gaines

We are very fortunate to have an organization like GASSP to partner alongside administrators across the state. Wait though….before reading any further, I want to make sure you are learning as much as you can concerning GASSP by following our social media channels.

Twitter: @GASSP

Facebook: Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals

Instagram: gassprincipals

Make sure you are following along those social media accounts.

When I was asked about writing for the newsletter then I had to reflect on my time in GASSP. It was the Summer of 2011 and Mark Wilson was President of GAEL. I was a second year Assistant Principal at Stephens County High School. I really did not know anyone but it felt unique to be at a conference in very nice enclosed tents on the property of the Jekyll Island Hotel. I remember sitting at a table by myself when Dr. Wilson sat at my table and we starting talking. Since that day, I have attended many trainings with Dr. Wilson, presented at one of his conferences, and was part of one of his video series. I tell you that story because you cannot put a dollar figure on the relationships you make while being a member of an organization like GASSP. Having someone you can call on that is in the trenches on a daily basis with you is so important. It is ok to not have the answer to every situation but have those people that you can call or text concerning situations that you come across. I now get to return the favor to those new administrators that come along in our organization.

Fast forward to 2022. I am in my eleventh year as Principal of Hart County High School and Vice President for GASSP. I encourage you to take time to attend the conferences. You will learn so much from not only our great presenters but in just casual conversations. Make sure you have registered for our Fall Conference in Savannah and I will see you there.

Membership Goal is 1000!

October is Celebrate School Principals Month

Each year during the month of October, we take time to celebrate the amazing work of principals across the nation. It is a time to thank principals for their hard work and dedication to the students and staff at their schools. Send a message to say Thank You to a principal who made a difference in your life or celebrate the amazing work of a colleague. Principals are some of the hardest working people in the field of education and they are the ones who are always supporting others. GASSP would like to say THANK YOU for your dedication to children and families across the state of Georgia.

GASSP Principal of The Year Application

As we celebrate principals, it is time to identify an outstanding middle school and/or high school principal from this great state. Our state winner will go on to represent Georgia at the national level competition.
