Raising ambition, accelerating action: towards enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions for forests – Despite global commitments to halt deforestation by 2030, only 8 of the top 20 countries with highest rate of tropical deforestation have quantified targets on forests in their national climate action plans, also known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). This is one of the key findings of a new UN-REDD report, which outlines how to adapt to and mitigate climate change.

UNEP announces 6 new cities joining #GenerationRestoration – To mark World Environment Day on 5 June, UNEP announced 6 new pilot projects that joined the Generation Restoration Cities cohort of 22 cities. Project Factsheet: Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Tuvalu - Natural ecosystems in Tuvalu provide key defenses for communities against the impacts of sea level rise and storms. A project is aiming to increase the climate resilience of these communities through ecosystem-based adaptation. In addition to restoring damaged ecosystems, the project is building resilience through climate-resilient agricultural practices; supporting alternative livelihoods; and mainstreaming EbA into policies and planning through capacity building.

As climate storm gathers, Pacific islands race to set up warning systems – Palau, an island nation of 18,000 people that relies heavily on tourism, is dangerously exposed to the tropical cyclones that routinely sweep across the South Pacific. To counter the threat, UNEP is helping Palau build automated weather stations and a system to track the height of waves. The equipment will allow government officials to monitor approaching storms, issue alerts to tour operators and plan rescue operations.

How should we tackle the Loss and Damage Fund? An Asia Pacific Perspective – The APAN Information Brief, published by UNEP’s Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN), provides focused analyses and offers insights to increase understanding of emerging adaptation issues, key policy discussions and emerging capacity development needs.
