Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, statement on HB87 signing---

"A very dark day for Georgia"

gonzalez_menendez
U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) with Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO.

Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, released this statement upon the signing of HB87, AZ-style legislation for Georgia.

ATLANTA (May 13, 2011) - Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, released this statement upon confirmation that Governor Nathan Deal will sign into law, HB87, Georgia's Arizona-style legislation:

"Today, Friday the 13th of May, will be a day that will go in our history books as a very dark day for Georgia. Governor Nathan Deal has decided to sign into law HB87, the 'Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011' or also commonly known as an Arizona-style law. GALEO, along with many other allies in diverse communities and business interests, worked diligently to defeat HB87 during the legislative process and have also been calling for the Governor's veto. Unfortunately, those efforts for reason have failed.

We are deeply outraged and concerned that the Governor has chosen to sign HB87 into law because it will do serious harm to Georgia for today and for our future.

GALEO Advocacy & Events
July 26, 2011
Greetings!

Yesterday, President Obama addressed Latino community leaders at the NCLR conference.  Unfortunately, President Obama feel short of expectations when he continued his promise of immigration reform while trying to deflect the fact that he has executive authority to defer the deportations of DREAM Act students, noncriminal immigrants and veterans.  Please see below for actions on this effort to get administrative relief and true leadership from President Obama on this issue.

Redistricting is very important for the Latino community and for all Georgians.  The Latino community nearly doubled since the last Census and accounted for 28% of the state's population growth.  Because of this, the Latino community should be respected in the redistricting process.  Please see below on how you can help in these efforts.

There are several events upcoming that you should attend.  Please see the details below too.

Stay informed.  Together, we will continue to make a difference in our state.

Thank you for your interest, support and dedication to GALEO & the GALEO Latino Community Development Fund.

In 2011, we are looking forward to increasing our membership numbers to truly grow an engaged Latino community.  We would like to encourage you to become a member of the GALEO Familia if you are not one yet.  As a GALEO Member, you will be able to fully participate in our GALEO Leadership Council, led by Laura Murvartian (Chair).  If you would like to join the GALEO Familia and become a Member, please visit this link:
http://tinyurl.com/GALEOMembership.  If you are interested in the GALEO Leadership Council and participating in the monthly meetings, please contact Laura Murvartian, Vice Chair: laura_murvartian@bellsouth.net.  Please engage and commit to work with our organization this year!  Every GALEO Member counts and we need YOU to join!

Lots of plans and activities for 2011 and we do hope you engage and join our efforts.

Thank you!

Hold President Obama accountable.

We need action, not more speeches.

Sign the America's Voice petition below and call President Obama and ask him to provide administrative relief from deportation for DREAM Act students, noncriminal immigrants and veterans. Please call him and tell him we need ACTION, not any more speeches. Remind him that he can ACT: 1-866-957-2612. REPOST this on facebook!

From America's Voice:

President Obama: ACTIONS speak louder than words.

Three years ago, Barack Obama promised to make immigration reform a priority during his first year in office.

Now, three years later, one million immigrants have been deported. Immigrant families are still being torn apart and DREAMers are still being rounded up under the policies of President Obama's Administration.

President Obama has the power to protect DREAMers from deportation, end programs that round up ordinary immigrants, and make it easier for families that include US citizens to stay together.

Add your name to the petition and tell President Obama to take a stand!
