Parish Newsletter June 2024

Message From Father Angi

Fr. Aaron Hess, our new parochial vicar who will join us in July, sends the following letter in which he tells us a bit about himself and his hope for the future.

My name is Fr. Aaron, and I am very excited to begin serving you and your family of parishes this coming July! I grew up almost as far away as possible in the Archdiocese, about 2 hours north of Cincinnati. My home parish was St. Mary’s in Philothea (about 200 people at our one Mass each weekend), and I graduated from Coldwater High School in 2012. I entered seminary right after graduation, spent 4 years at Bishop Brute Seminary in Indianapolis, and then 5 years at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary. My internship year was spent at All Saints and St. Vincent Ferrer in Kenwood, so I have had a good chunk of time on Cincinnati’s east side. I was ordained May 15, 2021, and for the past three years I have served in Shelby County at the St. Joseph Pillar of Families Parishes (which is where Fr. Alex will be going!). This includes Holy Angels, Sidney; St. Michaels, Ft. Loramie; Sts. Peter and Paul, Newport; and Sacred Heart, McCartyville. I was also the chaplain for Lehman Catholic High School my first year as a priest.

Some fun facts about me: I am the oldest of four children, with a sister and two brothers. One of my brothers is getting married in December, the first of our family to do so, so I am very excited! I bowled in High School and continue to go occasionally. I’ve gotten into wood burning recently, which has been an interesting and enjoyable hobby. Music has always been a big part of my life: band, musicals, choirs, piano, organ. I like watching and following different sports, especially Notre Dame football and Reds baseball, and professional tennis is by far my favorite! I also enjoy baking the occasional pie or two and pretending I know my way around the kitchen!

I am looking forward to serving these three parishes here in a short while and to work with and learn from both Fr. Angi and Fr. King. I’m also looking forward to getting to know many of you and your families. Feel free to reach out to say hello and introduce yourself, and I’ll do my best to start remembering names! And if you would like to invite me over some time, I can always bring a pie!

Know of my prayers for all of you, for your families, for our youth, and for the entire St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes. Please pray for me.

Fr. Aaron

Sincerely,

Fr. Steve

Capital Campaign Matching Challenge

In January, we kicked off a capital campaign to make much-needed updates and improvements to the church and campus.

An anonymous donor will match every pledge received from now until the end of June, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000.

Every dollar counts and now, your dollar goes twice as far. We hope you will prayerfully consider donating to our Capital Campaign and Honoring Our Past and Investing in Our Future.

Your commitment will help ensure that today’s Angels and future Angels will continue to be impacted by Guardian Angels’ excellent formation and education rooted in the Catholic tradition.

Summer Mass Plans

Due to renovations to Guardian Angels Church this summer, the Church will be closed for Mass. We will be celebrating Mass in the Undercroft beginning Monday, June 3rd.

Parking will not be available in the lower lot or in front of the rectory. Parking will be available in the main lot and at McNicholas High School.

Access to the Undercroft will be through the Gathering Space to the stairs on the west side (near the elevator) or, if you are coming from McNicholas, through the main, Beechmont Avenue entrance to the stairs on the east side.

Thank you for your patience for the next two months.

Clergy Announcements

The St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes will welcome a new parochial vicar this summer, Father Aaron Hess. Fr. Hess comes to us from the St. Joseph, Pillar of Families. He attended Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood in 2021. Fr. Hess grew up in Mercer County, Ohio. Fr. Hess enjoys pyrography (wood burning), plays a number of musical instruments, and is a big Notre Dame football and Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. Welcome to Father Hess. He begins his assignment July 1st.

Fr. Alex and Fr. Thomas complete their assignments on June 30th with us. Fr. Alex has been assigned as parochial vicar of the St. Joseph, Pillar of Parishes effective July 1st. Fr. Thomas has been in dialogue with his bishop in Nigeria about his next steps. A reception that follows the June 11th St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes Mass at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary will honor Fr. Thomas and Fr. Alex for their service to us. It is an opportunity to personally thank them and wish them well in their new endeavors.

2024-2025 Head Servers

Congratulations to our newly appointed Head Servers for the 2024-2025 school year—Nora Claes, Maggie Dunn, Miles Linz and Joe Myers. May God bless them in their ministry to our parish!

Congratulations, Father Brice Berger

Congratulations to Father Brice Berger on his ordination last month! Father Berger has been a pillar at Guardian Angels for the past three years, where he served his pastoral internship and has stayed involved in many ways. He has been assigned to Saint Francis de Sales in Lebanon and Saint Philip the Apostle in Morrow. We wish him the best in his assignment and will continue to keep him in our prayers as he embarks on his journey into priesthood.

St. Gregory the Great Hiring Announcement

Worship is very essential and central to our Family of Parishes. We are excited to announce we have hired an Associate Director of Worship and Guardian Angels Music Director, Matt Spencer. Matt is currently the music director at Our Lady of the Visitation Church in the Divine Mercy Family of Parishes on Cincinnati’s west side and has served as music director at Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, Nativity of our Lord and Holy Family Parishes in Cincinnati. Matt’s approach to music ministry is to have the four pillars of stewardship in his heart: hospitality, prayer, formation, and service. Matt will join us this summer. We welcome Matt Spencer to the St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes and Guardian Angels Church.

In addition, we are pleased to announce we have hired an Associate Director of Youth Evangelization for the St. Gregory the Great Family of Parishes. The new Associate Director is Steve Von Hoene. Steve has a wealth of experience in consultation, management, and working with and among youth. Steve will work with a youth evangelization team to best meet the needs of our youth in our family of parishes. Steve currently teaches at Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary and School of Theology as well. We welcome Steve as a vital part of the evangelization team.

Cookie Ministry

Thank you for your donations to the Cookie Ministry this year. The Peanut Butter group really appreciates your support. Your donations are much needed over the summer, as they minister to the needy at St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen all year. They put together a lunch sack on Tuesday mornings, so please drop off your donations to the rectory on Mondays. Your donation of cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc., adds a sweet treat to the lunches our peanut butter group makes for the needy of the St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen. Treats can be homemade or store-bought but should be individually packaged (2 cookies per bag). They also need juice boxes or pouches and prepackaged snacks like chips, pretzels, cheez-its, etc.

If you would like to help pack the lunches or drive them down to St. Francis Seraph, contact Kathy Hosking at 513-232-0958. Thank you for your help!

Thank you to all those that participated this year.
