Parish Newsletter July 2024

Message From Father Angi

Social Action is a very strong asset of our family of parishes as each parish has a vibrant social action committee. Part of Beacons Light is that each family of parishes has a Director of Love in Action. In the St. Gregory Family of Parishes as large as we are with strong social action committees and strong health ministries, we have divided Love in Action into a Director of Health Ministries and a Director of Social Action. Kendall Keiser, RN, serves as our Director of Health Ministries. Barb Szucsik has accepted the position of Director of Social Action. She will be responsible for the overall vision to advance human life and dignity within the framework of Catholic social teaching and organizing action through ministries of service and social justice. Barb will oversee and guide the various different projects and programs of the family of parishes so as to maximize participation and foster collaboration across various ministries. Barb will work closely with Kendall so as to bring a closer collaboration of our various ministries.

Barb has extensive experience as an attorney managing colleagues in different countries and has spearheaded the Empowerment Fund and the Refugee Resettlement Cluster under SACC. We welcome Barb to the St. Gregory Family of Parishes as Director of Social Action. Over the past year, we have acquired highly qualified and competent individuals to guide us in the years ahead:

Maggie Leon Guerrero- Director of Communication

Kendall Keiser- Director of Health Ministries

Jay Mather-Director of Evangelization

Michael Johnson- Director of Worship

Matt Spencer- Associate Director of Worship

Joan Cardone, Mark Dulle, Jenifer Tiettmeyer- Administrative and Stewardship Team

Bark Szucsik- Director of Social Action

Our St. Gregory the Great Pastoral Council under the leadership of the chair, Jim Moyer, has continued to be forerunners in leadership and communication working closely with the joint leadership staff. This week, a new parochial vicar has joined us, Fr. Aaron Hess, who will be highly involved in our family of parishes and with our pastoral council and joint leadership staff. Your prayers are appreciated as we continue to move toward becoming one canonical parish.

Sincerely,

Fr. Steve

Church Reopening Celebration

Church Renovation Update

We are in the midst of the second phase of the renovation and beautification of Guardian Angels’ church. The first phase, completed last fall, included new LED lighting, a new roof and ceilings in the transepts of the church, cleaning and lighting of the statues and reframing and installing the Stations of the Cross from our former church.

The current phase work, which started on June 3rd and is on schedule to be completed by the second weekend in August, consists of painting the church interior, installing new pews and kneelers, laying new flooring, refurbishing the tabernacle and upgrading the tabernacle area, installing a frame behind the Sacred Heart statue and obtaining a new presider’s chair and reupholstering the deacons’ chairs. We will also be rebalancing the sound system once this work is complete. Thank you for your patience during this construction process.

A few things to note about the renovation. The new pews will be spaced farther apart and the aisles along the transepts will be widened. A number of pews between the altar and the tabernacle will be replaced by chairs (with kneelers) in order to provide flexibility for our musicians and choir, and to facilitate the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. These changes will result in a slightly reduced seating capacity.

Thanks to the generosity of our parishioners, we will be able to proceed with the third phase of our project, which involves additional visual improvements including artwork in the alcove behind the Pieta statue and on the back (Beechmont) wall of the Sanctuary. Designs for these projects are in process. Also to come is a new organ console the current one is in need of major repairs — funded by a prior bequest from a parishioner. The organ will be moved back several feet from the altar once the new console is obtained in order to provide better handicap access and sight lines in the east transept.

We are grateful for the strong financial support our parishioners have provided for this project and we hope that the renovation and beautification will enhance the liturgical celebrations at Guardian Angels.

Due to renovations to Guardian Angels Church this summer, the Church will be closed for Mass.

Parking will not be available in the lower lot or in front of the rectory. Parking will be available in the main lot and at McNicholas High School.

Access to the Undercroft will be through the Gathering Space to the stairs on the west side (near the elevator) or, if you are coming from McNicholas, through the main, Beechmont Avenue entrance to the stairs on the east side.

Thank you for your patience.

Save the Date: Guardian Angels Parish Picnic

Guardian Angels will hold its annual Feast of the Guardian Angels parish picnic on Sunday, September 29th, immediately following 10 am Mass. More details, including information about how to RSVP, will follow soon.

Children's Choir Survey

We are excited to share that we will be establishing a children's choir for the St. Gregory the Great Family this fall. Keeping in mind the various activities that children are involved in, we are seeking preliminary input to gauge interest, schedule rehearsals, and develop a plan for traveling between each of the churches in our family of parishes so that everyone in the St. Gregory the Great Family can hear the beautiful music made by these children.

We would like input so that all children in the St. Gregory the Great Family, regardless of what school they attend (parochial, private, public, or home school), can have the same opportunity to sing at our liturgies. Please click here to complete the survey.

St. Gregory the Great Mental Wellness Ministry Survey

By integrating faith and action, the Saint Gregory the Great Mental Wellness Ministry seeks to:

  • Educate our parish family on how to promote mental wellness and reduce the stigma and isolation so often felt by those experiencing mental health issues.
  • Foster a faith-based network of caring individuals, reflecting Christ’s healing presence, that promotes mental wellness and provides support and other resources to those experiencing mental health challenges and to their loved ones and caregivers.

In the coming months, the Saint Gregory the Great Mental Wellness Ministry will sponsor a number of events and activities. We would appreciate your input to help guide our planning and priorities.

Please take a few minutes to complete our brief survey here.

For questions about the survey or to learn more about the SGG Mental Wellness Ministry, contact: Carl Paternite at carlpaternite@gmail.com or Lisa Averion at laverion@catholicaoc.org.

Cookie Ministry

Thank you for your donations to the Cookie Ministry this year. The Peanut Butter group really appreciates your support. They minister to the needy at St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen all year, so your donations over the summer are much needed. They put together a lunch sack on Tuesday mornings, so please drop off your donations to the rectory on Mondays. Your donation of cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, etc., adds a sweet treat to the lunches our peanut butter group makes for the needy of the St. Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen. Treats can be homemade or store-bought but should be individually packaged (2 cookies per bag). They also need juice boxes or pouches and prepackaged snacks like chips, pretzels, cheez-its, etc.

If you would like to help pack the lunches or drive them down to St. Francis Seraph, contact Kathy Hosking at 513-232-0958. Thank you for your help!
