GA JOBLESS RATE DROPS TO U.S. LEVEL
Georgia's jobless rate is as low as the nation's for the first time in nine years
the state labor department announced Thursday.

The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in August, which is down one-tenth of a percentage point from JulyThe last time Georgia's jobless rate was lower than the national average was July 2007, when Georgia unemployment stood at 4.6 percent and the U.S. rate was 4.7 percent.

In preliminary data, Tift County's jobless rate was 5.5 percent.

"This is the first time in nine years that Georgia's unemployment rate has been as low as the national rate," said state Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. "When we look back to that time, we see that our job market has made significant improvements, not only as far as the rate is concerned but we also have more jobs and more people employed than ever before."
BUTLER

The state's job total reached a record 4,387,200, as the number increased by 7,500, or 0.2 percent. Most of the gains came in trade, transportation andwarehousing, 7,500; leisure and hospitality, 5,800; and local government, 3,000, as the schools reopened for the school year. The job gains were offset somewhat by losses in construction, 3,500; health care and social assistance, 2,200; manufacturing, 2,100; and other services, 2,000.

Georgia's over-the-year job growth remained strong as the state gained 104,000 jobs, a 2.4 percent growth rate from August 2015. The national job growth rate was 1.7 percent. Most of the job gains came in trade, transportation and warehousing, 30,300; professional and business services, 25,800; leisure and hospitality, 22,900; education and health services, 12,300; construction, 9,500; manufacturing, 5,200; and financial activities, 4,400. Information services lost 5,000 jobs.

30th ANNUAL TOUR ENDS IN TIFTON

During the final stop of the Peanut Tour on Thursday, attendees had lunch at the UGA  Tifton Campus  Conference Center and saw a slideshow highlighting the 30 years of the Georgia Peanut Tour. TIFTON MAYOR
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
FOR CONSTITUTION DAY
The Honorable Julie Smith, Tifton mayor, speaks in the Chapel of All Faiths for the annual Constitution Day ceremony at 2 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 16, on thecampus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The event will also include the announcement of  the winner of the Constitution Day essay contest sponsored by ABAC's Student Government Association in
partnership with the Department of History and the Political Science Club.  The winner of the contest will receive more than $100 in gift cards from local restaurants.

Elected by citizens last November as Tifton's first female mayor, Smith took office in January. She has a dual role in the community as co-owner and Realtor for Advantage Realty Partners LLC. A licensed Realtor since 2000, Smith is a lifetime member of the Circle of Excellence/Million Dollar Club. She is a past president of the Tiftarea Board of Realtors.

Before her real estate career, Smith was executive director of the Tifton Main Street Program, where she gained extensive knowledge about downtown development and Historic District properties. An advocate for volunteerism and making her community the best it can be, she was named the Business Woman of the Year by the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce for her community service.

ABAC has a natural tie to the annual Constitution Day because Abraham Baldwin, namesake for the institution, was one of only two Georgia signers of the historic document 229 years ago on Sept. 17, 1787, in Philadelphia. When the 39 men signed the Constitution, they set the stage for a quality of life in America that still exists. The Constitution is the oldest and shortest national constitution in existence. William Few was the only other Georgia signer of the 4,543-word document.

Baldwin was born Nov. 22, 1754, served on George Washington's staff as a chaplain during the Revolutionary War. A lawyer, Baldwin  was later elected to the Georgia House of Assembly and represented Georgia as a member of the Constitutional Convention.

He later became the first president of the University of Georgia.
