Students, Apply to be an Academy Ambassador

As part of the Academy Ambassador program, medical students attend the MAFP Annual Convention in Sandestin, FL, in exchange for their assistance with planning and putting on the event in Destin. MAFP chooses student applicants who are interested in family medicine and pays for their registration, hotel room, and meals for the week.

While working our events, the Academy Ambassadors interact with exhibitors from all over the state, network with practicing physicians and get to a chance to bond with other students in other classes and campuses.

Hattiesburg Clinic, MEA Medical Clinics, North Mississippi Family Medicine Residency and others host lunches and dinners for the Ambassadors during their free time.

MAFP’s Annual Meeting will be July 21-24, at Baytowne Conference Center in Sandestin, FL. To apply to be an Academy Ambassador, you must be able to attend this meeting.

We are now accepting applications for July 2024. A limited number of students are accepted each year, so apply early.

NCCL Conference Update from Michael Beard, MD

I had the great privilege to attend the 2024 NCCL conference in Kansas City, Missouri. This was my first experience at this conference and was really impressed at what happens during this conference. I had the opportunity to be apart the Minority constituency group and witness what it takes to create a resolution. I also had the opportunity to be a part of committee hearings and along with the Business Sessions. During this time my eyes were open to the importance of the AAFP and the importance of being a leader and continuing to be involved even after residency. I look forward to being apart of this conference in the future.

2024 David G. Hall, MD Memorial Scholarship Winner

The MAFP Foundation is honored to award Ty Albans of Southaven with the David G. Hall, MD Memorial Scholarship.

The David G. Hall Memorial Scholarship fund was created in July, 2001 in honor and memory of Dr. David Hall of Natchez. Dr. Hall served in several leadership positions in the MS Academy of Family Physicians, and also was active at the national level. Remembered for his numerous accomplishments, the MAFP Foundation established the memorial scholarship for high school students interested in pursuing a career in the field of medicine.

Ty wrote his winning essay about Dr. Mettetal, a family physician at Mettetal Family Medicine in Sardis, MS. According to Albans, Dr. Mettetal, affectionately known as Doc, treats all his patients as if they are family or close friends and, even while remaining busy in his medical career, manages to stay very involved in the lives of his children.
