The back to school transition can be *ruff* on dogs. While it is often best to prepare your dog for the new routine in advance to school starting back up, there are still things that can help in those first few weeks of being back in the new routine! Here are some helpful tips to help your pup adjust to the transition.
- Provide your dog with extra exercise before leaving for the day.
- When leaving and coming home, don’t make a fuss about it. The more neutral you are, the less anticipation and stress your dog is likely to feel.
- Ensure your dog has toys, bones and/or mental enrichment options available while you are away.
- Leave soothing music or white noise on while you are away.
- Watch for signs of separation anxiety and seek help quickly if your dog is struggling – it is harder if it becomes more engrained.
- Keep a similar routine all week until the dog is more comfortable, even if you don’t need it to be every day.
