William Charbonnet, III, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the age of 72. He was born in New Orleans, LA on March 8, 1951 to the late William Charbonnet, Jr., and Vivian Joseph Charbonnet Sambrone. Affectionately known as "Charb" and "Sonny,"
William graduated from St. Augustine High School and accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of New Orleans. For nearly 35 years, He proudly served as a police officer and detective with the City of New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). He began his career in NOPD's tactical unit and later transferred to the motorcycle division. In 1986, William started in the Intelligence Division, where he worked in Executive Protection for the New Orleans City Council.
In 1994, he was assigned as Executive Protection to former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial. During this time, William participated in specialized training programs conducted by the Secret Service with mayoral protection teams from around the nation. He was later detailed to the New Orleans branch of the Secret Service, where he worked with Secret Service agents on high-profile and presidential visits to the city. After a brief retirement, he returned to law enforcement as a sergeant with the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office.
William leaves behind countless loved ones. Beautiful memories remain with his wife of 47 years, Roxanna Cuiellette Charbonnet; daughters, Kirsten Charbonnet Hudnall (Fredrick, II) and Aariel Charbonnet; grandchildren, Fredrick, III, William and Anona Hudnall; sisters, Camille Charbonnet Jones, Patrice Charbonnet Arceneaux (Bruce) and Jennifer Charbonnet Miles (Willie); sister-in-law, Alorna Cuiellette Kay (Richard) and brothers-in-law, George Cuiellette, III and Valiant Cuiellette, Sr.
A Mass of Christian burial honoring the life and legacy of the late Mr. William Charbonnet, III will be held at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, 9701 Hammond Street, New Orleans, LA on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11 am. Interment St. Louis Cemetery #3, 3421 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA. Visitation 9 am in the church. Due to Covid variants, facemask and social distancing strongly encouraged.
