Daniel Frederic Packer, Jr. was born December 8, 1947, in Mobile, Alabama and peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren on January 31, 2024. He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine August Packer, devoted children, Timothy Packer (Nicole), Vanice Packer Zenon (Alfred), Randall Ross (Natasha), Dr. Reginald Ross (Leslie) and Maria Ross-Burke. He was the loving grandfather of nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was the devoted uncle of Dr. DaCarla Albright, Tyra Albright, and Kyle Albright. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, the late Daniel F. Packer, Sr., and Algie Ervin Packer; sister, Debra Packer Albright and first wife, Carlene Banks Packer.


Packer retired as President and CEO at Entergy New Orleans, Inc., where his career with Entergy began in 1982 as Waterford 3 Nuclear Plant training manager. He later served as Waterford's plant manager, becoming the first African American to manage a nuclear plant in America. He was named CEO in 1998. Prior to joining Entergy, Packer was a senior engineer with General Physics Corp. and worked as a training coordinator with Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co. He served in the U.S. Nuclear Navy Program from 1969 to 1975. Retirement was never in his plans, Dan continued his skills as President and CEO of Urban Solutions Inc., a multi-faceted firm involved with projects associated with an urban environment.


In 2005, Packer was honored as one of the "Most Powerful African- American Executives in Corporate America" by Black Enterprise, a leading business and investment publication for the African American community. He was the first African American to become chairman of the New Orleans Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2001 among many other firsts.


On January 24, 2024, Packer became a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church, before his wife, children, Pastor, Deacons, family, and friends, solidifying his relationship in Christ.


A tribute to Daniel F. Packer, Jr. will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, 2515 Franklin Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, 4pm until 6pm followed by a ceremony led by the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and Prince Hall Free and Accepted Mason Lodge #248. Funeral Services on Saturday, February 10, 2024, New Wine Christian Fellowship, 1929 West Airline Highway, LaPlace, Louisiana. Viewing from 9am until 11am. Funeral Service at 11 am. Interment at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Mausoleum, 2349 La Hwy 18 Edgard, Louisiana 70049. Repast to follow at New Wine Multi-Purpose center.
