Raphael Freund (CAS'23)

ETA - Germany

From Raphael Freund (CAS'23) - "I spend most of my time working with the fifth- and sixth-graders at the Robert-Reinick-Grundschule in Berlin. In addition to supporting other teachers in their classrooms, I've taught my own class, English for Pros, for particularly advanced students. In my free time, I've been able to practice my German, pick up new hobbies, and get to know my city!"

Application Suggestion:

"When I applied for Fulbright, I sorta breezed past the section asking where I'd prefer to be placed, thinking I'd be happy to be offered any position at all. I was very lucky to be placed in Berlin, and I'd advise all prospective ETA applicants to really consider not only what setting they'd like to be in, but also what kind of school/age group they prefer. It really makes all the difference."

More about Grantee Directory and Alumni Ambassadors

As you are researching award types and countries, remember that there are two helpful resources to inform the development of your application.

Fulbright Grantee Directory

The directory for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a comprehensive list of Fulbrighters and allows you to sort information by the person's name, the country, the U.S. state of applicants, the institution, and the grant year.

Using the sort feature, you can find, for example, a list of all Georgetown Fulbrighters since 1949. You can further sort this list by a specific country to find out if any Georgetown Fulbrighters visited there in the past through this grant program.

Connecting with previous recipients (from Georgetown or other institutions) through this directory can provide you with excellent perspectives about the lived experience of being a Fulbrighter in a particular place, such as affiliation contacts for research projects, teaching assignments and supplementary projects, academic and extracurricular life in university settings, and ideas for engaging with the host communities.

While Fulbright does not provide email addresses in the directory, the program suggests trying to connect via LinkedIn. If you're interested in being in contact with a specific Georgetown Fulbrighter, your advisor can try to make that e-introduction for you.

Fulbright Alumni Ambassadors Program

In addition to the grantee directory, another resource (with email addresses!) is the Alumni Ambassadors Program.

From Fulbright: "Alumni Ambassadors come from an array of different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, states, fields of study, institutions, and world regions in which their Fulbright experience took place. They play a key role in bringing awareness about Fulbright opportunities and provide testimonials through conferences, presentations, webinars, articles, podcasts, and special initiatives throughout the U.S.

Assisting potential applicants, Alumni Ambassadors share real Fulbright experiences, the challenges of living abroad successfully, and how to meet the Fulbright Program's ultimate goal—to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries."

Contact an ambassador using the email address in the person's online biography. And remember recent Fulbrighter and Georgetown graduate Lavinia Taumoepeau-Latu (SCS'23) is a 2024 ambassador!

English Teaching Assistant - Kenya

A screenshot of the ETA in Kenya landing page in the Fulbright website

"Candidates must be mature, articulate, resourceful, motivated, flexible, have relevant teaching experience, and be committed to working in an instructional setting with Kenyan high school students.

Graduate students or graduating seniors with a degree in English or education who are considering careers in English, international education, or TEFL/applied linguistics and have experience in teaching or tutoring will be considered. Other fields will be considered if combined with experience in working with high school students, teaching experience and/or coursework in pedagogy.

Candidates with the ability to incorporate or ith Kenyan high school students. organize extra-curricular activities – music, art, and dance, English Clubs, Reading and Writing Clubs – are preferred. Candidates with an interest in African languages, culture, and history are also encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will not just be teaching English but explaining the U.S. and its culture to local citizens who have little contextual understanding of America.

ETAs are expected to exhibit a high level of professionalism and respect towards people in their host institutions and the community. They should also be prepared to work in challenging environments with living standards that are not as high as those in the U.S. or in Kenyan major cities."
