Jenna Douglas (CAS'19)

English Teaching Assistant - Spain

From Jenna Douglas (CAS'19) - "This year, I lived in Logroño, a small city located in the renowned wine region of La Rioja, Spain. Over the course of the school year, I taught over 400+ students, rotating between different classes each day and week, all varying in age and English level. It was such a joy to work with students, discuss meaningful topics, share about my life in America, and see the excitement on their faces when I arrived at class. I am missing it already!

Outside of school, I found a community in my small town among my co-teachers, roommates, landlords, neighbors, and my Fulbright cohort. We often frequented local vineyards, pueblos, and neighboring towns to explore our beautiful host region. In an attempt to aprovechar, or take advantage of everything Spain offers, I also tried out an assortment of things this year including a Spanish language class, a cooking class, and a hiking and running group for international participants! For my side project, I volunteered with a couple of nonprofits and helped orchestrate a school play.

I am so grateful for the chance I had to plant my two feet in the Spanish soil – to immerse myself in a new culture, learn a different way of life, and deeply invest in the people around me. It was a beautiful life experience, and I could not recommend the Fulbright Program enough for cultural exchange, getting outside of your comfort zone, and personal exploration and growth!"

Application Suggestion:

"First, honor your voice and story – that always has the most power and impact! Second, don’t be afraid to try more than once for a Fulbright. As a 2019 graduate, I started an application 5 years ago for the 2020-2021 cycle, but eventually rescinded my application. Fulbright remained on my heart, and I applied again (and won!) three years later as a 2023-2024 awardee. Good luck!"

MORE ABOUT MENTORSHIP

Questions have come up in advising recently about the Fulbright mentorship process.

Individuals will be matched with a campus mentor if they 1) list Georgetown University as their organizational affiliation and 2) lock (not submit) complete draft Fulbright applications in the portal by Georgetown's internal deadline (September 1, 12 PM noon ET).

Fulbright mentors are Georgetown faculty, staff, and alumni who generously volunteer their time each year to help with two important aspects of the application process. (Note: Mentor matching depends on the number of individuals who volunteer as mentors so applicants should consider locking their completed draft applications prior to September 1.)

First, a campus mentor reviews the draft application an applicant locked in the Fulbright portal. The mentor then meets with the applicant (in person or via Zoom) to discuss the application and provide feedback for strengthening it. After the campus mentor meeting, the applicant will have the opportunity to update the application in the Fulbright portal.

IMPORTANT: In order to meet with a mentor, applicants must complete, as soon as possible, the center's 2024-2025 Fulbright Waiver and Agreement Form.

Second, the campus mentor completes a Campus Committee Evaluation Form about the applicant that Georgetown submits directly to Fulbright. This document becomes a part of the applicant's materials reviewed by Fulbright selection committees. Visit the evaluation forms on the Fulbright website.

Award Spotlight

Study/Research - Panama

A screenshot of the Fulbright Panama webpage for the open study/research award

"Proposals to conduct research and/or study in Panama, either independently or as part of the candidate's current graduate program, will be considered.

However, serious consideration will be given to those who present significant study or research projects and establish an academic affiliation with an institution for coursework or research support. The research and its potential results should make significant contributions or have significant potential for impact on Panama.

Applications in all fields will be accepted. Areas of particular interest are International Finance; Environmental Sciences; Hydrology; Forest Management; Fishery Management; Sustainable Tourism; STEM Education; Ethnography; Cybersecurity; Journalism; and Political Science with a focus on anti-corruption, transparency, and governance.

Candidates must be dedicated, detailed and responsible research fellows with experience in the research field, since they are expected to work independently.

Candidates must have a clear idea of how they will engage with the host country outside of their grant activities to fulfill this mission; and how they plan to share their culture and values in their host community.

Since all grantees are required to give presentations to Post and to the community at-large on their research achievements at the completion of the program, candidates must be a confident presenter at conferences and teachers in classrooms, able to explain their project and results to audiences of all levels.

Applicants are responsible for arranging their own affiliations with an academic institution, research facility, or another appropriate organization."
