From Jenna Douglas (CAS'19) - "This year, I lived in Logroño, a small city located in the renowned wine region of La Rioja, Spain. Over the course of the school year, I taught over 400+ students, rotating between different classes each day and week, all varying in age and English level. It was such a joy to work with students, discuss meaningful topics, share about my life in America, and see the excitement on their faces when I arrived at class. I am missing it already!
Outside of school, I found a community in my small town among my co-teachers, roommates, landlords, neighbors, and my Fulbright cohort. We often frequented local vineyards, pueblos, and neighboring towns to explore our beautiful host region. In an attempt to aprovechar, or take advantage of everything Spain offers, I also tried out an assortment of things this year including a Spanish language class, a cooking class, and a hiking and running group for international participants! For my side project, I volunteered with a couple of nonprofits and helped orchestrate a school play.
I am so grateful for the chance I had to plant my two feet in the Spanish soil – to immerse myself in a new culture, learn a different way of life, and deeply invest in the people around me. It was a beautiful life experience, and I could not recommend the Fulbright Program enough for cultural exchange, getting outside of your comfort zone, and personal exploration and growth!"
Application Suggestion:
"First, honor your voice and story – that always has the most power and impact! Second, don’t be afraid to try more than once for a Fulbright. As a 2019 graduate, I started an application 5 years ago for the 2020-2021 cycle, but eventually rescinded my application. Fulbright remained on my heart, and I applied again (and won!) three years later as a 2023-2024 awardee. Good luck!"
