Research - Brazil

From Araya Caba (GSAS'23) - "Currently, I am conducting in vitro, immunology research to investigate the relationship between Zika and the corpus callosum. Specifically, I have been testing the effects of Zika virus on T84 tumor cells via cell culture. My weekly tasks center on strengthening my aseptic techniques in cell culture, mice surgery, infection, immunocytochemisty, image analysis, and statistical analysis."

Application Suggestion:

"I would highly recommend having your application read over by at least five different people from different academic backgrounds. My project was heavily STEM-based, however, I received the best application feedback from my non-STEM peers. Additionally, please do extensive research on your country of choice. Reddit does not have all the answers! I would most definitely suggest that you reach out to past alumni as well for a more candid perspective on the Fulbright experience."

MORE ABOUT TRANSCRIPTS

Applying for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program includes the requirement that you submit transcripts from every institution - both at the graduate and the undergraduate levels - where you earned degrees and/or any type of course credit for your work.

An application will be considered not eligible if you do not fully comply with this transcript requirement. From Fulbright:

  • You must upload one unofficial academic transcript from each post-secondary institution from which you received (or expect to receive) a degree. Additional transcripts should be uploaded for coursework and grades not reflected on degree-granting transcripts.
  • If a degree is still in progress, you may upload a copy that shows the most recently completed semester.
  • Make sure that the document that you submit clearly shows your name, the name of the institution, and appears as an academic record that is organized chronologically--with course dates, titles, credits, and grades. Screenshots of online academic portals (e.g. a course schedule) will not be accepted․
  • Graduate-level students who do not include undergraduate transcripts will be considered ineligible.
  • Consult the Transcript Upload Instructions page for more detailed information.
  • Your full name and the institution name must be clearly stated on all transcripts.

Georgetown Transcripts

For Georgetown, please order an official copy of your transcript/s using the service Parchment via the Office of the Registrar.

Please note: The Fulbright portal has had some technical difficulty with official Georgetown transcripts that are uploaded directly as the Parchment-delivered digital .pdf.

To avoid this problem, you should upload a high-quality scanned .pdf that you make of your official Georgetown transcript/s. You can do this by either 1) scanning the paper Parchment transcript/s you received in the mail or in person OR 2) printing out the digital Parchment transcript/s you received and then scanning the printout/s.

Do not upload into the Fulbright application portal the .pdf you received directly from Parchment.

***Unofficial transcripts, such as a printout from MyAccess, are not acceptable for the purposes of a Fulbright application.***

Please visit us at the center if you need any assistance with scanning.

New Opportunity

Fulbright John Lewis Civil Rights Fellowship

"The Fulbright-John Lewis Civil Rights Fellowship (Fulbright-John Lewis) honors the legacy of John Lewis, civil rights leader and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, by promoting a greater understanding of the history and tenets of nonviolent civil rights movements.

This fellowship, awarded to selected Fulbright U.S. Student Program finalists, provides expanded learning opportunities to enable participants to enhance the reach and impact of their Fulbright experience, and to promote studies, research, and international exchange on nonviolent movements that establish and protect civil rights around the world.

In addition to receiving the standard Fulbright U.S. Student award benefits, Fulbright-John Lewis participants will join a global community of Fulbrighters with access to additional opportunities, such as a dedicated lecture series, leadership training, and other professional development activities, as well as a capstone seminar after the completion of their Fulbright Program. . . .

For the 2025-2026 award cycle, eligible semi-finalist candidates will be offered an opportunity to apply for consideration for the Fulbright-John Lewis Fellowship after semi-finalist notification."

Award Spotlight

Study/Research - Hungary

A screenshot of the open study/research award webpage for Hungary on the Fulbright website

"The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers ten study/research awards per academic year for U.S. citizens holding at least a bachelor’s degree to conduct research and/or to study at a Hungarian higher education institution. Applications are welcome in all fields. The academic year is from September to the end of May. . . .

Hungary’s rich cultural traditions, competitive research and higher education institutions make our country an ideal place for young scholars to spend an academic year. Grantees enjoy robust support from the Hungarian Fulbright Commission all through their grant period. They are regularly invited to cultural enrichment programs so they get to know many different parts of the country, and as many educational and cultural institutions as possible. . . .

Applicants are welcome in all fields of study. Preference will be given to subjects in arts, music, humanities, and social sciences as they relate to the political, social and economic changes and developing democracy in Hungary; the history and culture of Hungary and of East Central Europe; and the sciences including Mathematics. Applicants from the military or with military experience are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a well-defined research project and ability to work independently. A high-level of maturity, flexibility, and ability to serve as a cultural ambassador is expected."
